Bizen does not get much better than this ash blasted vase with lots of hi-iro coming through by leading artist Mori Tozan enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled simply Bizen Hanaire. It is 26 cm (over 10 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Mori Tozan was born into one of the six main families of traditional Bizen in 1938. He trained under his illustrious father Mori Chikuzan. He has been awarded many prizes at the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition, the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, and Chunichi International Ceramic Art Exhibition.

A large bowl by important contemporary porcelain artist Yagi Akira enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The shape is very elegant, with stiffly rising sides leading to an abrupt undulating rim in soft celadon green. A striking silhouette, it is 22 cm (8-1/2 inches) diameter, 16.5 cm (6-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
This name is a must have in any collection of modern Japanese Pottery. Akira was born in Kyoto in 1955, son of avant-garde Yagi Kazuo (1918-1979) one of the founding members of Sodeisha. Akira was voted one of the 20 most important living artists by Honoho, Japans premier printed ceramic forum. Works by the artist are held in the British Museum, Victoria Albert Museum, Cleveland Art Museum, Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian and Tokyo Muesum of Modern Art among many others. He was also the recipient of the Japan Ceramic Society (JCS) award in 1998, one in a long and prestigious list of awards.

Colorful ash rains in a torrent down the torn sides of this fabulous vase by Hayashi Shotaro enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hai-yu Hanaire (ash glaze Vase). It is 13 cm (5 inches) diameter, 19 cm (7-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Hayashi Shotaro (b. 1947) is one of the biggest names in contemporary Mino ceramics. Although initially entering reguar employment upon graduating highschool, in 1967 he returned to Toki city to help his brother Kotaro. Very quickly within him was born the urge to create. He won the highest award at the Gifu Prefectural Art Exhibition in 1968, and from there his talent blossomed. He established his own kiln in 1974. Since then his list of exhibitions and awards has been amazing, including the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (National Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition), Governors Prize and five times winner of Best of Show at the Asahi Togei Ten (Asahi Ceramics Exhibition), and Best of Show at Gifu Prefectural Exhibition. At the Mino Ceramics Exhibition, in addition to the highest award, the Mino Ceramics Award, he has received all three major awards, including the Shoroku Award and the Kobei Award.

A complete set of the twelve animals of the zodiac by Miyashita Zenji, each enclosed in the original signed wooden box retaining the original Shifuku and Shiori. Sizes vary from 8 up to 16 cm (3 to 6 inches) and all are in excellent condition.
Miyashita Zenji (1939-2012) was born into the family of potter Miyashita Zenju, and graduated the Kyoto Municipal University of Art under Kiyomizu Kyubei and Kusube Yaichi. Starting with the most difficult, he worked from Celadon, which relies on shape and extreme control of firing. He began exhibiting in the annual Nitten exhibitions in 1964, eventually winning eighteen prizes. According to the Sackler, which holds 6 works by him, “ His mature work was a modern embodiment of a classic Kyoto mode associated with the Heian period (794–1185). He applied delicate layers of color—reminiscent of multilayered court robes or decorated papers made for inscribing poetry—using not over-glaze enamels or glazes but clay itself, dyed with mineral pigments”. He is held in the aforementioned Freer-Sackler, the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, and the Brooklyn Museum the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and of course the National Museums of Modern Art both in Kyoto and Tokyo among a host of others.

Here is a masterpiece by Wakao Toshisada, one of the great artists of the post-war era who helped to revive the Shino tradition (now one of the most popular Japanese forms) from extinction. An early masterpiece by the artist showing his abilities from inception, this bowl was selected for the cover of the exhibition invitation card in 1973 (card included). It is 14 cm (5-1/2 inches) diameter, 9 cm (3-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Wakao Toshisada was born in Tajimi, Gifu prefecture, home of Mino pottery, in 1933. He was first recognized at the New Crafts exhibition of 1960, the same year he was first exhibited at the Central Japan Art Exhibition. Three years later he made his debut at the Asahi Ceramics Exhibition, following in 1965 with the National Traditional Crafts Exhibition. In 1971 he first exhibited with the Nihon Togeiten (All Japan Ceramics Exhibition) and was awarded the following year the New Mino Artists Prize, gathering acclaim as a leader in the field. After many domestic and International exhibits, he was awarded the Kato Kohei prize in 1986. and was recipient of the prestigious Japan Ceramics Society (JCS) Award in 1989. He was named an intangible cultural asset of Tajimi city in 1995, and of Gifu Prefecture in 2003, and works by the artist are held in the Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, V&A, Freer Gallery and Sackler among many others.

A striking Tenmoku Vase by maser of the genre Kamada Koji enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Ginsho Tenmoku Hyo-gata Kabin. It is 15cm (6 inches) diameter, 31cm (12 inches) tall and in excellent condition. Kamada Koji (sometimes written Kamata) was born in Kyoto in 1948, and apprenticed under Shimizu Tadashi from the age of 19. In 1971 he graduated from the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramics Research facility and began teaching there while beginning his research into Tenmoku ware. The following year he was accepted into the Nihon Dento Kogeiten Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and in 1975 the bi-annual Japan Ceramics Exhibition (Nihon Togeiten). In 1977 he quit teaching in order to devote his full talents to exploring the possibilities of his medium. In 1988 he would enter under the wing of Living National Treasure Shimizu uichi, undeniably one of the leading experts in the field at that time. Since his work has ben exhibited widely both domestically and in Europe and the Americas. He is held in the collection of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and Philadelphia Museum among others. A flash of gold blazes on the raw earth side of this masterpiece tea bowl by Kato Kiyoyuki enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hai-yu Chawan. Green ash runs down opposite the iridescent flash of gold. Inside the ash sees to catch on the horizontal furrows left by the artists fingers. It is 12.7 cm (5 inches) diameter and in excellent condition.
Kato Kiyoyuki was born in 1931, the heir to a long-established tile-making business in Seto. He studied ceramics at high school however his main interest lay in painting and sculpture, and it was only when he was in his late twenties that he began to work in pottery. He made his first submission to the Nitten exhibition in 1958, and began producing well-designed utilitarian ceramics in keeping with the principles of the then newly established Japan Craft Design Association, but soon turned his hand to sculptural ceramics. Kato's development as a ceramic sculptor owed much to his friendship with Teshigahara Sofu (1900-79), the former head of the Sogetsu school of flower-arranging. Terashige's experimental interests encouraged Kato to explore his sculptural ambitions in vessel as well as non-vessel formats. According to Kiyoyuki, “When a shape that is completely free of unnaturalness emerges, the clay and I become one”. He won the Grand Prize at the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition in both 1964 and 1965. He is the recipient of the most prestigious Japan Ceramic Society Gold Prize. He has exhibited with the aforementioned Nitten National Fine Arts Exhibition and Asahi Ceramics Exhibition, Chunichi Kokusai Togeiten International Ceramics Exhibition as well as Faenze International Ceramics Exhibition, Nihon Togeiten National Ceramics Exhibition, Nihon Gendai Kogeiten National Modern Crafts Exhibition and Seto Togeiten among many many others, and his list of private exhibitions could not be covered on this page. Work by him is held in the V&A (London), Tokyo and Kyoto National Museums of Modern Art, Canterbury Museum (New Zealand) and the Sogetsu Museum in Aichi among others. A stunning large Vase by important Hagi artist Yamato Yasuo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hagi Ensai Henko (Flattened Hagi Vase in Flame Color). The top is raw earth burnt red by the flame, Below dark iron turns to ocher then the soft earthen beige of hagi, which gives way to pink, then cream before turning dark gray. It is 36.5 x 13 x 35 cm (14-1/2 x 5 x 14 inches) and is in excellent condition.
It is likely no collector of Hagi will need an introduction to this innovative artist. Yamato Yasuo was born in 1933 to a long line of Hagi potters. He learned under his father Harunobu and grandfather Shoroku. One of the first to challenge many traditions associated with Hagi Yaki. He was displayed with Sodeisha, Kofukai, the Nitten, Nihon Dento Togei Ten, Nihon Togei Ten among many others. His list of prizes is most impressive and much too long to write here and his influence on the world of Hagi pottery will likely be the source of a thesis someday in the not too distant future! He has been named an important cultural asset of Yamaguchi Prefecture (ken Juyo Mukei Bunkazai) and is held in the collection of the British Museum among many others.

An incredible organic form, the delicate petals appearing to waft in some tide by Shingu Sayaka enclosed in the original signed wooden box. A closed bud on the side is lined with hundreds of tiny sharp needles in black. It is 6 x 5 x 4 inches (15 x 13 x 10 cm) and in excellent condition.
Shingu Sayaka was born in Osaka, the industrial and commercial heartland of central Japan, in 1979. She graduated the Osaka University of Arts in 2001, before being selected as an artist in residence at the The Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. She exhibits her amazing sculptures at the Asahi Togeiten where she has garnered a number of awards, and has a list of exhibitions to back up her popularity.

A large basin by legendary female porcelain artist Ono Hakuko, raw white porcelain decorated with golden flowers enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kinrande Tsubaki Mon Hachi. It is 25 cm (10 inches) diameter, 11 cm (just more than 4 inches) tall an in excellent condition.
From Aichi prefecture, Ono Hakuko was trained by her father initially in the ceramic arts. However, she was most strongly influenced by the great experimentive artist Kato Hajime (1901-1968) and his work with gold. This affected her own style deeply, and it can be said that she carried on his research. She was awarded the JCS award in 1980, one of Japans most prestigious ceramics awards. In 1992 she was named an important cultural asset (Juyo mukei bunkazai) of Saga prefecture. Bucking the traditional image here is another of Japans great cultural assets who fought against a system of prejudice to rise to the top and it is an honor to be able to offer something by her. A strikingly unusual charred vessel in the form of a kinuta fulling block by Atarashi Kanji enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is made of lumped clay scorched dark from deep within the embers of the kiln. The unique texture has allowed liquified ash to fill the spaces between with dusky color. I bought this piece on a summer visit with the artist this year, the only one like it he had. It stood out from across the room among all the ash glazed pots as a masterpiece. It is 12 x 14 x 24 cm (4-1/2 x 5-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches) and in excellent condition.
Atarashi Kanji was born in Osaka in 1944, and graduated the Osaka College of Craft design. After 3 years in Kobe, and 4 in Kishiwada (Wakayama) he came to settle in Iga, where he was one of the driving forces behind the resurrection and preservation of the Iga tradition. Although displayed at the National Craft Fair, he prefers the intimacy of the private exhibition, of which he holds several every year. And if ones visit to japan is not timed right for an exhibition, he can otherwise be found at his kiln working along with his son Manabu.

A playful sculpture which challenges the viewers perception by Hayashi Yasuo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled simply Sakuhin (work). It is 12.5 x 9 x 12.5 cm and in perfect condition. According to a description of a similar work in the collection of the Met: Hayashi’s series of black and gray coil-built trompe l’oeil “boxes,” a group that was inspired by his experience flying without lights at night as a kamikaze pilot... this work presents new ways of looking at three-dimensional forms. Hayashi trained in the Japanese style of painting prior to World War II. After the war he became fascinated by avant-garde Western artists, including Pablo Picasso, whose work influenced his early ceramics. He then developed the spare, abstract style that characterizes his mature art. The artist created this piece’s surface patterning by masking certain areas and using an atomizer of his own design to spray glaze onto the stoneware before firing.
Hayashi Yasuo was born in Kyoto in 1928, son of a potter. He began to study traditional painting in 1940, but his studies were interrupted by the Second World War. Folowing the conflict and discharge from the military, he began making pottery, helping to found the Shikokai ceramic society of avant-garde ceramicists in 1947. His artistic career is daunting, and much too long to put into this brief introduction including many awards both domestic and abroad (Italy, France, Portugal, Canada, Australia, New Zealand…). Also he has been the focus of solo exhibitions in some of the most important galleries throughout the Japanese archipelago as well as the United States, Australia and Germany. A fabulous textured faceted bottle shaped vase by Sakai Hiroshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Ai-ji Shino Ichirin Sashi (Blue Shino Single Flower Vase). It is 16.5 cm (6-1/2 inches) tall, 11.5 cm (5 inches) diameter and in excellent condition.
Sakai Hiroshi was born in Toki City in central Mino country in 1960. He graduated the Nagoya Institute of Technology in 1983, after which he spent two years at the Tajimi City Ceramic Research Facility before apprenticing under future Living National Treasure Kato Kozo. He has been exhibited or awarded at the National Traditional Crafts Exhibition (Nihon Dento Kogeiten), National Ceramic Art Exhibition (Nihon Togeiten), Asahi Ceramic Exhibition, as well as being exhibited internationally in Taiwan, Korea, and Italy among others. Work by the artist is held in the Italian Faenze Ceramic Museum, The Gifu Prefectural Museum of Modern Ceramic Art and Mino Ceramic Art Museum, both inTajimi as well as the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum among others.

An organic form by young female artist Tanaka Tomomi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Mimi-nari and dating from 2017. It is 6 x 6 x 5-1/2 inches (15 x 15 x 14 cm) and is in excellent condition.
Tanaka Tomomi was born in Hyogo prefecture, near Kobe, in 1983, and graduated advanced courses at the Aichi University of Education in 2008, however her work has been garnering attention in various exhibitions since 2005. She has received the Kyoto Mayor’s Award at the “39th Women’s Association of Ceramic Art” in 2005, and been prized at the 2006 and 2007 Asahi Togeiten Ceramic Art Exhibition. In 2014 she was given Silver at the 10th International Ceramics Competition Mino. Highly sought after, her work is held in the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum.

Two lug handles leap from the sides of this traditional form by Karatsu Legend Nakagawa Jinenbo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Chossen Karatsu Mimitsuki Hanaire. Mottled glaze covers the rough clay darkened by flame with flashes of white and blue and crispy chunks of ash and debris clinging to the sides. It is a work which embodies the best of this highly sought artist. The vessel is 9 inches (23 cm) tall and in excellent condition.
Nakagawa Jinenbo (1953-2011) was always fascinated with Karatsu ware, and studied under the great Inoue Toya from the age of 24. Several years later he returned to his hometown to establish a climbing kiln of his own, which he put to great use. From there, not satisfied with his own skills, he went to Tanaka Sajiro for an additional apprenticeship. Afterwards, as many Chajin artists, he concentrated on private exhibitions as an outlet for his work, shunning the world of mass competition and retail. His life and career were cut short far too early, making his work both highly valued and hard to find.

Pale jade spots dot the incised surface of this unusual vase by Nagae Shigekazu enclosed in the original signed wooden box retaining the Shiori and Shifuku. The vase, if not for its distant, moon-like quality, has a very pop-art-presence, blending both the austerity of Japanese traditional aesthetics with contemporary art. Fun and moving; a haunting pleasure. It is 14 inches (35.5 cm) tall, 5 inches (13 cm) square at the base, 7 inches (19 cm) wide at the rim and in excellent condition.
Nagae Shigekazu (b. 1953) graduated the Seto Industrial School of Ceramics in 1974 Beginning to grab attention in the late 70s, he has striven to perfect porcelain casting techniques, creating one-off shapes and forms previously impossible. He is held in the collection of the V&A (London), LACMA (Los Angeles) and the National Gallery of Australia, Cincinnati and Cleveland Art Museums, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Japan Foundation and many many others. With very low output, this is a rare opportunity to join the worlds top museum collections by acquiring this artist.
According to Ceramics Now Magazine: Nagae Shigekazu (born in 1953), is one of the leading pioneers of porcelain casting and firing techniques in Japan. An agate-like cluster floats in the crystal glass of this large vessel by leading Japanese glass artist Hosoi Moto-o enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Ever inventive his works speak of the asymmetry and textures of the natural world. It is 43 cm (16-3/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Hosoi Moto-o (Motoo) was born in Osaka in 1964, and both his older brother and sister also became glass artists. After creating a studio with his brother, he ventured out on his own. He has been exhibited and or awarded at the National Modern Crafts Exhibition, (Nihon Gendai Kogei-Ten) and the Nitten National Art exhibition among others. His dynamic glass works are based on the theme of nature and time.

Red and Blue Rivulets drip down over green melding into the ashen gray textured glaze on this Tea Jar by Sakuchi Ensen enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 25.5 cm (10 inches) diameter, 28.5 cm (11-1/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition. The box top is lightly stained.
Sakuchi Ensen (B. 1922) began on the path of the potter in 1946, searching to create something unusual in the hills of Okayama. His research led him to create this highly decorative yet wildly natural glaze he came to call Hishhoku Nanban Yaki.

A small unusual Seed-Like basin in earth tones by Gomi Kenji enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled O-pa, both the vessel and the title seem open to interpretation. It is 29 x 21 x 16 cm (11-1/2 x 8-1/4 x 6 inches) and in excellent condition.
Gomi kenji was born in Nagano in 1978. After graduating from the prestigious Waseda University, he went to Okinawa where he studied Kokuba-Tougei, Tsuboya ware, which has been produced since the 17th century, in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. In 2004 he moved to Toki city in Gifu, then to Kasama in 2005. He is now Designated Professor, Kasama College of Ceramic Art. The process of firing ceramics is central to the creation of his works. The organic shape of the work is the result of choosing the most logical form from the viewpoint of firing. In addition, the color and texture that make you feel the full earthiness can be obtained by burying it in rice husks and firing it. He has been displayed at the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, the Kikuchi Biennale, Mashiko Ceramic Art Exhibition, and in 2014, he won the Grand Prix at the 10th International Ceramics Competition Mino, Ceramic Arts Category. Work by him is held in Museums here in Japan and throughout the world, including the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum, Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Gifu, Museum of Ceramic Art, Hyougo and Victoria & Albert Museum, London among others.

This past summer I had occasion to visit Richard Milgrim in his Mountain Studio and asked him to pair some sake cups and Tokkuri for us. It is a rare opportunity to have an artist personally select pieces which he feels work together. This set is making use of his signature Concord glaze (Konko-yu) from America, with clay from Japan, while the cup is also using a variant of that glaze Black Concord (Konko-guro). The Tokkuri is 9 cm (3-1/2 inches) diameter, 12 cm (5 inches) tall. The rim of the cup wavers between 6 and 6.5 cm diameter (roughly 2 inches) and both are new from the artist in perfect condition.
Richard Milgrim (b. 1955) of White Plains New York graduated Antioch College in 1979 following a year travelling in Japan and internship at the Fogg Museum of Harvard. That same year he began down a path, following a “way” as it is called in Japan, Sado or Chanoyu, the Japanese Tea Ceremony. That same year he returned to Japan, apprenticing initially under Iwabuchi Shigeya while studying at the Midorikai of Urasenke. His first solo exhibition was held in 1981, one of many, and he subsequently began to move about Japan, gobbling up styles under various masters such as Living National Treasure Fujiwara Yu, Kato Koemon and Tahara Tobei. He established his own kiln in Hiyoshi, North of Kyoto in 1984. He is probably the only foreign potter to be truly accepted into the brand conscious world of Japanese tea, and his shows frequently sell out early. From 2000 to 2014 he spit his time between Hiyoshi and a kiln he established in Concord Massachusetts, where he developed some innovative techniques and glazes now firmly a part of his repertoire in Japan. He is adept therefore with Shino, Oribe, Bizen, Seto, Karatsu and Yakishime styles. According to Richard “Since 1977 on my first arrival in Kyoto, I have been blessed with an unending flow of "deai" (encounters) that have almost been like stepping stones on the garden path, leading me into the innermost depths of the field of "Chatou" (tea ceramics).Undoubtedly the most significant "deai" was meeting Dr. Sen Genshitsu (the former 15th generation Grand Master of the Urasenke Tea Tradition), in 1979. With his guidance and endorsement over the years, including the naming of my 2 studios in both Japan-RICHADO-GAMA, and America- KONKO-GAMA, Dr. Sen has been the primary catalyst in the development of my career over the past 40 years.”

An exquisite vessel by Bizen legend Yamamoto Toshu enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Bizen Meipin. The form is perfection, covered with a dusting of ash revealing a flame colored eye on one side, everything about the proportions timeless. This is a piece I could wax on for hours about, but will leave that up to the viewer. It is 8 inches (20.5 cm) tall and in perfect condition.
Yamamoto Toshu (1906-1994) began working in a pottery at the age of 15. 12 years later (1933) he went independent, but interestingly decided to train again later not under a Bizen master, but Kusube Yaichi, perhaps stimulating his unusual eye for Bizen. After much acclaim, it was in 1959 that he made his worldwide appearance, with a gold prize at the Brussels World Exposition, and was named an important cultural property of Okayama that same year. He was most in love with the wheel, and his forms are crisp and sharp. He was named a living national Treasure in 1987. Works by the artist are held in the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo and National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto as well as the Victoria Albert Museum among many others.

Tarnished beaded silver is draped in gold over which runs a deep forest green on this apple shaped chawan by innovative artist Ichikawa Toru enclosed in the original signed wooden box. A thick gold tinged bead dangles from one side, and bubbly dark glaze pools within. It is 11.5 cm (4-1/2 inches9 diameter and in excellent condition. He really takes things to the extreme, challenging and yet incorporating something of the idea of Wabi into his outlandish works.
Ichikawa Toru was born in Tokyo in 1973. In 2015 he established his current studio in Bizen after 4 years of apprenticeship under another Bizen Outsider, Kakurezaki Ryuichi. He has since developed quite a following, with his shows selling out often within hours.

A spectacular work by Maeda Masahiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Iro-e Kin-gin-sai Mentori Hachi (Faceted Bowl with Gold, Silver and Colored Decoration). It is roughly 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) diameter, 5-1/4 inches (14 cm) tall and in excellent condition.
Maeda Masahiro (b. 1948) graduated the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts in 1975where he received instruction from Living National Treasure Fujimoto Yoshimichi and Tamura Koichi as well as Asano Akira. He has exhibited with the Nihon Dento Kogeiten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibition), The National Ceramics Exhibition (Nihon Togeiten), and taken part innumerable museum and traveling exhibitions both within Japan and abroad. Hi works have been collected by the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum, Musée Tomo, Tokyo, Minneapolis Institute of Art, and Asian Art Museum, San Francisco among many others.

An unusual lidded vessel in the shape of a clay pitcher beautifully patterned with natural ash glazes by Furutani Churoku I enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-Yu Dobin Hanaire. This looks like something drawn from a literati painting, a scholar seated with his brushes and ink beside a table upon which tea cools, the tall pot promising refreshment. The glaze lies heaviest between the handle and spout, dribbling down into the ember blackened ash deposits below, while opposite Tombo-no-me (dragonfly-eyes) permeate the red clay surface. The receptacle is 27 cm (11 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the family.
Furutani Hiromu (Churoku I, 1922-2012) Fascinated by the aesthetics of "wabi" and "sabi" expressed in the “Koge” (Charing),“Hi-iro”(Flame Color) and other naturally born kiln effects of Shigaraki ware, Furutani Hiromu devoted himself to the recovery of pre-Edo firing techniques. He was on the forefront of research into ancient kiln construction and he recreated both an Anagama and then a climbing kiln which could produce wares to rival the ancients. In the manner of craftsmen of time immemorial, he produced both Tsubo and Tea Ware. He was the first artist named a Dento Kogeishi (Traditional Craftsman) in Shigaraki, accepting that honor in 1976. After that his works were exhibited throughout Japan, as well as internationally. Breaking from tradition however, he also worked to create carved and modeled pieces with animated creatures writhing across the surfaces or arching to form handles.

Glaze Bidoro sweep upwards toward one red eye on this amazing tsubo by Yukuyoshi Manabe enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Bizen Yohen Tsubo. It is 11 inches (28 cm) diameter, 10-1/4 inches (26 cm) tall and in excellent condition.
Yukuyoshi Manabu was born in Kagatonishi near the heart of Bizen country in 1941. After working in Osaka as a young man, he returned to Bizen to assist the family building supply company. There he began to study clay under Mori Hozan and Ohira Seinosuke. After rebuilding an old kiln, he established his own. He ahs exhibited with the Issuikai Ten, the Chunichi Kokusai Togeiten, the National Ceramic Exhibition (Nihon Togeiten) among many others and has received a great many awards over his career.

Burgeoning grapes in vivid gold decorate this pure white bowl by Ono Hakuko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hakuji Kinrande Chawan. It is 13.3 cm (over 5 inches) diameter, 7.2 cm (3 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
From Aichi prefecture, Ono Hakuko was trained by her father initially in the ceramic arts. However, she was most strongly influenced by the great experimentive artist Kato Hajime (1901-1968) and his work with gold. This affected her own style deeply, and it can be said that she carried on his research. She was awarded the JCS award in 1980, one of Japans most prestigious ceramics awards. In 1992 she was named an important cultural asset (Juyo mukei bunkazai) of Saga prefecture. Bucking the traditional image here is another of Japans great cultural assets who fought against a system of prejudice to rise to the top and it is an honor to be able to offer something by her. Widely fissured pale green glaze covers the elegant form of this fresh water jar for use in the Japanese Tea Ceremony by Uraguchi Masauyuki enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled simply Seiji Mizusashi. It is 12.5 cm (5 inches) tall, 16.5 cm (6-1/2 inches) diameter and in excellent condition. It comes complete with the original black lacquered wooden lid.
Uraguchi Masayuki (b. 1964) discovered pottery while attending the Tokyo National University of Fine Art and Music and his world turned when he was introduced to a Song Dynasty Seiji Vase" at the Tokyo National Museum designated a National Treasure during one of his art courses. After graduation he met (and studied under) living National Treasure for celadon Miura Koheiji at the Tokyo University of Art. Inspired by the Southern Song celadons as well as the work of Japanese master ceramists Itaya Hazan and Okabe Mineo, Uraguchi spent years personally researching his own celadon glazes and clay bodies types. He finished his post graduate program in 1989, claiming a prize that same year at the National Traditional Arts and Crafts New Works Exhibition (Nihon Dento Kogei Shinsakuten). The following year he would b awarded at the Nitten National Exhibition. In 1991 he established his kiln in Tochigi prefecture. He has since received innumerable awards, including the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition, Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition (Nihon Togeiten) among many others. In 1995 he travelled to China to study first-hand the Song guan and Longquan ceramics. In 2001 he moved his Kiln to Hachigocho, Ibaraki Prefecture

Five Oribe plates of elongated rectangular form splashed with red by important contemporary potter Yamada Kazu and enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kakuyu Oribe Choho-zara. Kakuyu-oribe is a style developed by and unique to Kazu. Each is roughly 15 inches (38 cm) long and all are in excellent condition.
Kazu was born in Tokoname city, one of Japans ancient kiln areas, into a line of potters. He would have been influenced early on by his father, Yamada Kenkichi and uncle living National Treasure Yamada Jozan. He graduated the Osaka Art University before moving to Echizen to establish his first kiln. He was propelled to international fame after building an Anagama kiln in Germany in 1988. He has been displayed domestically at the Asahi Togeiten, Nipon Togeiten and Chunichi Kokusai Togeiten as well as a host of private exhibitions in prominent galleries and department stores.

An exceptional sake cup by Living National Treasure Shimizu Uichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Ki Ho Rai Tai Sen Mon Hai. It is covered in his famous shattered-ice-like glaze with metallic drips circling the rim. It is 6 cm diameter (2-1/2 inches), 4 cm tall and in excellent condition, complete with the original Shiori and Shifuku.
Shimizu Uichi (1926-2004) was born in Kyoto the son of a ceramic dealer. Discarding the family business, he apprenticed in plastic arts under future Living National Treasure Ishiguro Munemaro. His work retains some principal elements of his teachers style while incorporating an understated elegance and avant-garde spirit of challenge uncommon for his time. He was first exhibited at the Nitten in 1951, receiving numerous awards there since. He also took the gold medal at the Prague International Exhibition, and was at the Brussels World Exposition. He is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum, Kyoto Museum of Modern art, Clark Center and the Freer Gallery among many others.

A looping handle of natural bound vine rises from lugs high up on this flattened bottle by Furutani Hirofumi (Churoku II) enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Tsurutsuki Hen Hana-ire. On flat side is burnt dark with starlight white spots twinkling between shell impressions and rivulets of crystalline green. The other is a smorgasbord of color, from textured black to emerald to all shades of olive and orange. Between rages a battle for space between the two aesthetics. It is 15 x 8.5 x 42.5 cm 5-1/2 x 3-1/4 x 17 inches including the vine handle.
Furutani Hirofumi (b. 1948) is the real deal, a Shigaraki potter trained under his father, recipient of tradition and knowledge who does not say much. After graduating school, he went to work in a large production kiln where he studied firing technique and clay preparation. He then returned to the family studio where he headed up the preparation and firing, while, taking a second position in that respectful Japanese way to his long-lived father, who strictly tortured clay, relying on his son to do all the “real work.” The Japanese title for such a person is: Ennoshita no chikara mochi (The true strength hidden under the eaves). A decade after the passing of Churoku, every day you will find him in search of the natural phenomena born from the dialog between soil and flame and the elements. He oversees kneading and preparing the clay, as well as the kiln work, stacking and preparations for firing, creating his own pieces while allowing his son to take the fore. He is not competing or seeking fame, just quietly making pots in that very Japanese way, treading the path of the Unknown Craftsman.

An eccentric crusty bowl, very different, by Hashimoto Tomonari enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Raku Yaki Yohen Chawan. Unlike his normal burnished and color ridden surfaces, this bowl is ominous, matte, shot through with pin-hole-textures and rivulets streaming from the rim. It is like something from deep within the universe, an ancient traveler which has been charred and scarred on its way through the atmosphere. Not only that but it is slightly deeper than his normal bowls, 10.5 cm (4 inches) to the rim, and misshapen, 10.5 to 11.5 cm ((4-4-1/2 inches) diameter, making it fit better in the hand. On a recent visit to the artist, after viewing a number of his newest bowls, I had to ask: Which one is your favorite? Without hesitation he went straight to this one.
Hashimoto Tomonari was born the son of a sculptor and has felt comfortable with the processes of creation since childhood. He graduated with a masters from the Kanazawa University of Art in March 2017, then relocated to Shigaraki. A visit to his humble home studio is eye opening. Although he comes across as shy in conversation, when you move on to the subject of art, he is all confidence. He was named a finalist for the Loewe Craft Prize in 2019 and is already making international waves around Asia. He is held in the collection of the V&A London and Los Angeles County Museums.

Always innovative, here is a basin for flower arrangement in pastel Hagi colors by Kaneta Masanao carved and torn from a solid block of clay in the Kurinuki technique enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Making use of a flower frog, I can imagine a fabulous spray of green rising up from within the undulating rim, like the first burst of flora through the last of the winter snow. It is 30 x 21 x 12.5 cm (12 x 8 x 5 inches) and in perfect condition.
Kaneta Masanao likely needs no introduction, certainly one of Hagi’s most well known and easily identifiable names. Although an eighth generation potter inheriting an overtly conservative tradition, he has transcended limitations, and was one of the first to begin carrying Hagi into the 21st century. His work evokes a distinct tension between both function and form, and technique and tradition. he has been displayed both nationally and internationally innumerable times. His pieces are in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum and Museum of Modern Art Brooklyn. He has been displayed at the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten and Nihon Togei Ten among many many others.

Simple arcs of bent-grass in iron decorate this large bowl by living National Treasure Shimizu Uichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Tetsu-e Chawan. It is 14.8 cm (6 inches) diameter, 8 cm (3 inches) tall and in excellent condition. It comes with a clipping from a newspaper announcing the naming of Uichi as Living National Treasure in 1985.

A set of five deep plates by Living National Treasure Kondo Yuzo decorated with pomegranates in blue on snow white porcelain. The are 20.5 cm (8 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, each signed on back. They come in a custom made contemporary box. Kondo Yuzo (1902-1985) was born in the Gojozaka district of Kyoto and studied alongside Kawai Kanjiro and Hamada Shoji at the Kyoto Ceramics Research facility, where he studied kiln technique directly under Shoji. He then apprenticed under recently returned Tomimoto Kenkichi for three years before establishing himself as a unique artist in the Kiyomizu district of Kyoto in 1924. He served as a professor at the Kyoto University of Art where he helped shape generations of potters. After an illustrious career he was named a Living National Treasure for Sometsuke Porcelain in 1977. Works by the artist are held in the collection of the LACMA, Cleveland and Brooklyn Museums of Art, Kyoto Municipal and Tokyo National Museums of Modern Art among many others.

A deformed-vase by Kiyomizu Rokubei VIII (Masahiro) formed as a closed cylindar then cut to allow the clay to mis-shape during the firing process. It is covered in dark glaze with highlights of yellow. It is 10-1/4 inches (20 cm) diameter, 11-1/2 inches (24 cm) tall and in excellent condition. Although the first heads of the Kiyomizu family concentrated on traditional, popular objects and designs, Rokubei VII and VIII "took a radical turn" to produce abstract, geometric three-dimensional pieces which are either purely decorative, or combine function with distinctive, unexpected form. His works have been described as "futuristic-looking" and as having "a very Cubist sensibility.
This comes from the Kiyomizu Family estate, there is no box.
Kiyomizu Masahiro was born in Kyoto in 1954son of the sculptor and future 7th head of the Kiyomizu family Kyūbei (at that time known as Hiroshi). Masahiro graduated with a degree in Architecture from the prestigious Waseda University in 1979. Returning to Kyoto he would spend a year at the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Training Institute and another year at the Municipal Decorative Arts Institute in Kyoto before beginning at the family kiln where he would be handed the reins upon his father’s retirement in 2000. A technique he favors is joining together flat slabs of clay in extended forms, highlighting instead of hiding the process of their construction. He then makes cuts to weaken the structure, which results in distortions during firing. He has received numerous awards, including the Grand Prize at the Asahi Ceramics Exhibition in 1983 and 1986, Governors award at the Chunichi International Exhibition of Ceramic Arts (Chunichi Kokusai Togei ten), Kyoto Prefectural Culture Award in 1993 and 2009 and the JCS award in 2005. His work is held in the collections of the British Museum, National Art Museum of China, National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, National Museum of Art in Osaka and Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art among others.

A novel look at the Onioke idea of a handled vase, this one rising like Devils Tower to a narrow opening crossed by a handle by Nishihata Tadashi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Yohen Oke-gata Hanaire. It is 31.5 cm (12-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Nishihata Tadashi was born in Sasayama in the mountains of Hyogo, and ancient castle town in 1948. He began potting in 1969, focusing on items for use. In 1986 he first entered the realm of public exhibitions with his entry into the Nihon Dento Kogeiten National Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 1986. He was awarded in 1988 at the Kinki Kogeiten regional Crafts fair. In 1989 he would see the first of many awards at the Nihon Dento Kogeiten National Traditional Crafts Exhibition as well as a first time entry into the Nihon Togeiten National Ceramics Exhibition. In 1990 he would continue garnering fame with the first of several awards at the Tanabe Art Museum Chanoyu no Zokei Ten (Modern Forms in Tea).
