This guinomi by Watanabe Takuma complements the gourd-like Sake Server currently being offered. It feels as if it has been hewn from a lump of wood, the texture of tree bark on the fingers striking a natural accord with the gourd-like sense of the overturned bottle. has a variegated surface like patched together metal plates, with brilliant coloration. It comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Bizen Sake-nomi. It is roughly 6 cm (2-1/2 inches) diameter and in excellent condition acquired this summer from the artist.
Watanabe Takuma was born in Hyogo prefecture in 1968, and after graduating Kansai Daigaku University in 1991, began studying Bizen ware under Yamauchi Atsushi. In 1996 he entered the Bixen Toen Kiln. Shortly thereafter he began exhibiting and has receied numerous awards at the Okayama Prefectural Exhibition (Okayama Ken Bijutsu ten), National Traditional Crafts Exhibition (Nihon Dento Kogeiten), Issui-kai-ten, as well as being selected for the influential Tanabe Museum Modern Forms in Tea Exhibition among others. He built his own kin in 2006.

A surprisingly relaxed cup with steep sides decorated both inside and out with a single joined black brush trace by Shigemori Yoko enclosed in a signed wooden box. It is covered in a millet colored glaze with a crawling dry black line circling the body. The form is slightly slumped on one side, exuding an unperturbed confidence. It is roughly 7.5 cm (3 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, in a box annotated by her nephew.
Shigemori Yoko (1953-2021) was born in Kagoshima. Yoko came to Kyoto where she initially studied painting at the Kyoto Tankidai Art College, then moved to ceramics at the Kyoto Municipal Art University where she studied traditional pottery techniques under Kondo Yutaka before entering advanced courses under Yagi Kazuo, graduating in 1979. Her first solo exhibitions were held while still a student, at Gallery Iteza in Kyoto. She eschewed the world of competitive exhibitions in favor of the intimacy of private galleries, and her list of solo exhibitions is expansive. She received the Yagi Kazuo prize in 1986 and 1988 at the Nihon Gendai Togeiten. She was one of five artists featured in Toh, volume 76, The first issue dedicated to Kyoto Potters. Toh was at the time the most in depth survey of important contemporary potters published in 1993. Her work is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

This hand pinched Guinomi by Shigemori Yoko has been decorated with rough large polkadots in black applied directly to the still wet clay creating a dry, porous surface and unique texture. The vessel is 9 cm (3-1/2 inches) diameter, 5 cm (2 inches) deep and in excellent condition. It comes enclosed in a wooden box titled simply Guinomi annotated by her nephew.

I mirror like black vessel pinched together at the rim creating a comfortable sake serving container by Masatomo Toi enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The vessel is 13 cm (5 inches) long and in excellent condition, directly from the artist. It is photographed here with one of his golden thorned sake cups.
Masatomo Toi was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1992, and graduated the Design course at the Tajimi Ceramics Research Facility in 2019. Since he has been developing his series of “Thorny” vessels and objects. At the same time, he has been studying the way of tea, and these bowls are his first unadorned venture into the tea world (although we will also offer a few striking horned chawan as well). His works have been featured in a number of group and juried exhibitions. He will soon depart Japan for a year of study and experimentation abroad, and we expect great things in his future.

Namako mottled dark blue glaze covers the fractured surface of this guinomi sake cup by Kashima Aya enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The technique is deceptively complex. In fact the initial form is created, then a thin layer of ceramic is made separately, dried, then cracked, and the individual pieces are applied like mosaic to the prepared form. Each the space in between the tiles is then abraded, the tiles glazed with color and the space n between glazed with iron. Each piece requires a great amount of painstaking dedication to complete. It is 6.5 cm (2-1/2 inches) diameter, 5.5 cm (just over 2 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.
Kashima Aya was born in Kanagawa prefecture in 1987. She graduated the Tokyo Kasei Gakuin University, Department of Arts and Culture in 2010. She graduated the Tajimi City Ceramic Design Institute Design Course in 2020, with an additional two years in their advanced Ceramic Lab, graduating in 2022. During this time, she took part in many group exhibitions. She received Nyusen status at the 55th Women's Association of Ceramic Artists (WACA) Exhibition in 2021. In 2023 her work was selected for presentation at the “Ceramic Synergy Exhibition” held at the Kyoto Kyocera Museum of Art.

A beautiful small Guinomi by Matsuo Takaaki enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Yohen Hai. It is 7 cm 2-3/4 inches) diameter, 5 cm (2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Matsuo Takaaki was born in Yokohama in 1938. He began studies under Tsuji Seimei at Renkoji in 1960 where he trained for over 15 years. He became independent in 1975 and built a climbing kiln in Tama. Since he has been exhibited with the Issuikai but mainly focuses on the intimacy of private exhibitions.

An exquisite black clay guinomi from Tokoname engraved with white lines by Shibata Yoshiaki enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 2-1/2 inches (7 cm) diameter and in excellent condition.
Yoshiaki is credited with having discovered the secret of this black clay, now in use by any number of atists in Tokoname. He was born in 1946, and apprenticed under Living National Treasure Yamada Jozan, becoming one of his top pupils. He established his own kiln in 1965 producing traditional tea ware as well as art objects. In 1972 he was recognized at the Vallauris International Ceramics Exhibition, and has had innumerable public and private exhibitions since.

A wide Hai (sake cup) covered in earthen glaze with vibrant blue lines undulating through the basin by Shigemori Yoko enclosed in a signed wooden box. The blue has worked its way into the pale glaze, creating a stark texture in the riches line through the bowl. It is 9.2 cm (roughly 3-3/4 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, in a box annotated by her nephew.

A selection of Five variously designed and colored sake cups by Ono Emi, each enclosed in the original signed wooden box. They are 5-7.5 cm (2-3 inches) diameter, roughly the same height, and all are in excellent condition. These are being offered separately. Ono Emi worked with pottery alongside Ono Hakuko for 20 years. Married to Ono Jiro, she assisted him at his studio for 15 years, She began exhibiting her own works in 2014, and has participated in a number of private and juried exhibitions since.

An early vase by sculptural legend Yanagihara Mutsuo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Heki-yu Tetsu-e Kabin. Hekiyu is a glaze made of copper and cobalt, which when fired takes on the color of Lapiz. In this case the Lapiz blue pours down over a tapering base of raw earth decorated with spiraling blades in iron glaze. It is 23.5cm (9 inches) diameter 27.5 cm (11 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Yanigahara Mutsuo (b.1934) was raised in Seto, and studied in Kyoto along with contemporary Morino Taimei with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship. His work is largely sculptural, and his choice of colors is his reflection on the decadence of Japanese society. A list of exhibitions and awards would be much too long but includes the Japan Ceramics Society Gold prize in 2002. Listed as one of the most influential potters of the 20th century in the Japanese ceramics magazine Honoho Geijutsu, he is held in the Museum of Modern Art, both Tokyo and Kyoto (MOMAT, MOMAK), The National Museum of Art, Osaka, V&A, Great Victoria Art Gallery, Portland and any number of other prominent public and private collections throughout the world. A leading figure among Kyoto artists, Yanagihara has taught at Osaka University of Arts since 1968. Yanagihara's application of brightly coloured abstract motifs to vessel forms with anatomical, sometime sexually explicit features - a combination with which he first experimented in the late 1960s and early 1970s - has been a characteristic of his work for the past fifteen years. As in the case of Morino Taimei, a close friend and exact contemporary at Kyoto City University of Arts in the late 1950s, Yanagihara has been considerably influenced by the experiences he gained during two periods of teaching in the United States in 1966-8 and 1972-4. His use of gold and silver - a wry comment, he has explained, on the decaying values of contemporary society and the corruption of Japan's political system - echoes the extravagant style of certain North American artists.”

A blue whirlpool spirals in the bowl of this perfectly formed celadon cup by Yagi Akira enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 2-3/4 inches (7 cm) diameter and in excellent condition.
This name is a must have in any collection of modern Japanese Pottery. Akira was born in Kyoto in 1955, son of Avant-garde Yagi Kazuo (1918-1979) one of the founding members of Sodeisha. Akira was voted one of the 20 most important living artists by Honoho, Japans premier printed ceramic forum. Works by the artist are held in the British Museum, Victoria Albert Museum, Cleveland Art Museum, Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian and Tokyo Museum of Modern Art among many others. He was also the recipient of the Japan Ceramic Society (JCS) award in 1998, one in a long and prestigious list of awards.

Splendid Keshiki, it is difficult to describe this stunning square platter by Bizen master Kakurezaki Ryuichi (b. 1950) which comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The massive dish is torn and scraped from a single thick slab of clay. Spattered with natural ash glaze, it is a true masterpiece by this most sought after artist. The piece is 16-1/2 inches (42 cm) square and in excellent condition. It is likely that Ryuichi needs no introduction, one of the most well known of Bizen potters, he is interestingly originally not from Bizen but far off Nagasaki, which seems to have gifted him with the ability to see the clays potential beyond conventional form. He graduated the Osaka University of Fine Arts, then enjoyed a long apprenticeship under Bizen Living National Treasure Isezaki Jun before opening his own kiln in 1986. Combining traditional technique with modern architectural form, He was recipient of the Japan Ceramics Society Award, Grand Prize at the Fifth Contemporary Tea Ceremony Utensils Exhibition, Tanabe Museum and has a list of public and private exhibitions which go beyond this brief add, including a showing in New York this year. His works are held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum of London, National Ceramic Museum of France and the Tanabe Museum among others. A prominent mimitsuki mentori vase by Kakurezaki Ryuichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The tapering rectangular form has been gouged and cut, slabs torn off and odd holes sliced into the sides and top. The clay is dark and shiny, spattered with green ash. The vase is 15 inches (38 cm) tall, the base 5 x 8-1/2 inches (12.5 x 21.5 cm) and in excellent condition. A very heavy unusual charger by modern avant-garde artist Suzuki Goro decorated with Oribe colored graffiti of traditional themes enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Combs, hairpins and bamboo and ceramic pipes in orange, green and black decorate the pale sand-textured surface of the massive charger. Typical of this artist is cut from a very thick slab with an irregular edge. On back a self portrait hunches over the clay forming a large vase, the caption beside reading Nanikuso! (I will not lose!) The dish is 17-1/2 inches (44 cm) diameter, weighing more than 7 kilograms (15 pounds) and is in perfect condition! Goro has a list of shows and prizes too lengthy to go through, but the highlights are, Nitten National Art Exhibition, Nihon Shin Kogei Ten (New National Crafts Exhibition), Nihon Gendai Kogei Ten (National Modern Crafts Exhibition), Asahi Togei Ten-(First of Show and governors prize), as well as the Kofukai Ten among many others.

A stunning white hagi glaze tinted with lavender cools on the sculpted natural from of this most expressive chawan by representative Hagi artist Kaneta Masanao enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is roughly 5 inches (13 cm) diameter, the same height and in perfect condition. Like Ryuichi, Masano likely needs no introduction, certainly one of Hagis most well known names, he has been displayed both nationally and internationally innumerable times. His pieces are in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum and Museum of Modern Art Brooklyn. He has been displayed at the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten and Nihon Togei Ten among many many others.

An unusually large Tetsu-mon Vase by Ningen Kokuho Shimizu Uichi over 13 inches (33 cm) tall enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Dispersed over the pin-holed white glaze are diametrically opposed red and black iron dashes of color. A vase with huge presence. Shimizu Uichi (1926-2004) was born in Kyoto the son of a ceramic dealer. Discarding the family business he apprenticed in plastic arts under Ishiguro Munemaro. His work retains some principal elements of his teachers style while incorporating an understated elegance and avant-garde spirit of challenge uncommon for his time. He was first exhibited at the Nitten in 1951, receiving numerous awards there since. He also took the gold medal at the Prague International Exhibition, and was at the Brussels World Exposition. He is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum, Kyoto Museum of Modern art and the Freer Gallery among others.

A stunning silver glazed Tokkuri by artist Kozuru Gen (b. 1938) in the original signed kiri wood box. The vase is completely covered in silver or platinum glaze with sansai like yellow and green in spontaneous crystalline dabs set in extra drippings of thick silver about the circumference. Countering this strength of character is faded orange, adding a subtle suggestion inside the mouth of the bulbous Tokkuri form. The vase, which dates circa 1980, is 7 inches (18 cm) tall. Gen has operated a kiln in both Fukuoka Japan as well as in Topsfield Massachusetts, and has participated in too many national and international exhibitions to mention. His work is held in the permanent collection of the Kyoto Museum of Modern Art among others.

A huge Yakishime vessel by modern ceramicist Mihara Ken (b. 1958) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. This piece has an almost haunting presence, the hada sandy and rough, you would think it could crumble in your hands, yet is fired so hot it rings like a bell when tapped. The dark grays and raw earth tones add to that sense of mystery, like something ancient discovered in a dark cave. The vase is 14-3/4 inches (37.5 cm) tall and 11-1/4 (28.5 cm) diameter and in perfect condition. Ken was born in Shimane prefecture in 1958, and apprenticed under Funaki Kenji at the age of 23. Impressed rope designs under black swirls create a dynamic sense of movement on this huge charger by Ningenkokuho Shimaoka Tatsuzo enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The piece is 16 inches (40 cm) diameter and 3-1/2 inches (8.5 cm) tall; in perfect condition. After serving in World War II, Tatsuzo apprenticed under world famous Mashiko Mingei potter Hamada Shoji, establishing his own kiln in 1954. Working with rope patterns, Tatsuzo set out to create a style unique to himself, resulting in the piece you see here, which is quintessential Tatsuzo. In 1996 he was designated a Living National Treasure (Juyo Mukei Bunkazai or Ningenkokuho).

Enigmatic script in Doro-e raised design decorates the sides of this simple white glazed chawan by 20th centiury Master Kawai Kanjiro enclosed in a wooden box endorsed by his wife Tsune. Brief tinges of subdued red appear through he cloudy white glaze. It is 5 inches (12.5 cm) diameter, 4 inches ((10 cm) tall and in perfect condition. Kanjiro was a true artist by nature, and together with Hamada Shoji, set a pattern of study for modern potters. After graduating the Tokyo School of Industrial Design, he came to study in Kyoto, eventually establishing his own kiln on the Gojo-no-Saka (It remains standing today and is a must see for anyone visiting Kyoto). Together with compatriots Hamada Shoji and Bernard Leach (with whom he traveled throughout Asia) established the modern Mingei movement in ceramics, the most influential ceramics movement in the 20th century. His research on glazes (of which he developed thousands over a lifetime of work) remains influential as well. Refusing to be limited to ceramics, Kanjiro also worked in bronze, wood and paint. An interesting final note on this unusual artist, when offered the title of Living National Treasure, an honor bestowed on very few, he declined.

An igneous Shigaraki hana-ire by the innovative young Mushin-Gama potter Kowari Tetsuya enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The vase is 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) tall, 4-3/4 inches (12 cm) diameter at the bottom. It is in perfect condition. Tetsuya was born in Fuji-city Shizuoka in 1970, and graduated the prestigious Meiji University. He has apprenticed under a number of teachers, taking a bit from each without allowing their direction to overpower his own personal style. He works in Shigaraki, Bizen and Shino wares. The artist has been displayed at the Nihon Togei Ten National Ceramics Exhibition, as well as the prestigious Nitten consistently.

A globular vase covered in the trademark sansai glazes of Ningenkokuho Tokuda Yasokichi III (Masahiko) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The vase is 6-1/2 inches (17 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. Designated Living National Treasure in 1997 for his supremacy in the use of Kutani glazes, Yasokichi, born Masahiko, has gone a step further than many National Treasures by broadening his spectrum with a new style of Kutani ware. Masahiko graduated from the Kanazawa school of arts, and took up apprenticeship under his father Yasokichi II. His works are held by many private collections, as well as the Polk museum and Kanazawa Contemporary Museum of Art.

A fantastic sculptural Bizen vase by Ajiki Hiro (b. 1948) enclosed in the original signed wooden box dating circa 1995. The vase is roughly 14 inches (35 cm) tall and very heavy, the entire piece carved and cored from a solid block of clay. Hiro is an artist versed in many of Japans ceramic traditions. He fires Shino, Oribe, Seto, Raku, Bizen and Hagi styles as well as styles all his own. His daring Bizen forms have been compared to those of Kakurezaki Ryuichi, and in fact the two often collaborate and this was likely fired in that potters kiln. He has been displayed nationally at the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (Japanese Traditional Crafts Exhibition) and received grand prize at the Tanabe Museum's Contemporary Tea Forms exhibition among many others. He lives and pots in Shimane when not out traveling Japan or the world.

Latticed windows of gold shine softly through the translucent blue glaze of this shapely vase by Kutani Master Matsumoto Saichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The vase is 11 inches (28 cm) tall, and in excellent condition, dating circa 1985, a time of upheaval in the artist life where he established a wood fired climbing kiln in his new home village of Yoshinodani. Saichi comes from a distinguished line of potters, his Father being Sahei and grandfather Sataro. Both were prominent figures in Kutani. Upon graduation from the Kanazawa Institute of Fine Art, he followed in the footsteps of so many greats like Hamada Shoji and Kawai Kanjiro by studying in Kyoto at the National Ceramic Research Institute before returning to Kanazawa. He was first accepted into the Nitten in 1952 (the piece exhibited was purchased by the Tokyo Governemnt), and was awarded on numerous occasions, including the grand prize there in both 1985 and 1988. He was also recipient of prizes at the Asahi Togei Ten Ceramic Exhibition, Kofukai-Ten and Kutani Dento Kogei Ten (Traditional Crafts Exhibition of Kutani, Grand prize). He has a list of exhibitions which goes beyond the scope of this description, and is in the collection of the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art among others.

Two ethereal herons stand against a wind blasted bank lost to evening on this E-zara by Yokoishi Gagyu (b. 1975) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The deep dish is covered in a dark glaze shot through with pale fingers of white, the two creatures small against the other-worldly background. The backside is decorated with swirling lines of white, signed within the foot ring. It is 9-1/4 inches (23.5 cm) diameter, 2 inches (5 cm) tall and in perfect condition. His first exhibited piece at the age of 20 in 1955 took the governors prize at the Nagasaki Kenten Prefectural Art Exhibition. That was the beginning of a prestigious career prolific with awards culminating in being named an important cultural property for Nagasaki prefecture in 1975 (the state version of a living national treasure) he has also displayed with the Nihon Dento Kogeiten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibition) among many others, and has an impressive number of private exhibitions. He is credited with reviving the lost art of Utsutsukawa-yaki, and is a very important figure in modern Arita.

Try describing this incredible Mizusashi covered in glassy Oribe green glaze by important artist Hayashi Shotaro enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Spectacular is all that comes to mind. It is entirely sculptural, with a refinement of glaze only this artist can create. The piece is 7 inches (18 cm) tall, 9 inches (23 cm) diameter and in perfect condition. Shotaro (b. 1947) is one of the biggest names in contemporary Mino ceramics. He first began with a 7 year apprenticeship under his older brother Kotaro, ending when he established his own kiln in 1974. Another Radical piece by Hayashi Shotaro, this dramatic tsubo is thinly veiled in a crystalline feldspathic glaze, the violent eruptions peeling away from the surface catching and pooling the glaze to spectacular effect. It comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The piece is 12-1/2 inches 831.5 cm) tall, 10-1/2 inches (27 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. Shotaro (b. 1947) is one of the biggest names in contemporary Mino ceramics. A sizable rectangular platter covered in pale mottled earth-toned glaze by Shigeya Iwabuchi (1925-1993) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. A simple slab of clay, 1 inch (2.2 cm) thick, curled up in the corners. The simplicity is refreshing, the disparate surface natural and cool to the eye. It measures 16 by 11-1/2 inches (40 x 30 cm) and is in perfect condition. Shigeya was born in 1925 in Kyoto. He graduated the Kyoto Ceramics division of the Kyoto Industrial Research School, and then moved to the ceramics department of the Kyoto University of Art, finally studying under Living National Treasures Kondo Yuzo and Tomimoto Kenkichi. He has been displayed at The Kyoto Municipal Museum of Modern Art, Asahi Togei Ten and consistently at the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten among others. This piece dates circa 1970.

A large pottery box decorated with oribe patterns over textured Seto clay by Suzuki Goro enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Iron designs in orange fill are supplanted by splashes of Oribe green. Inside the lid dragonflies circle over a snake in the base. Typical of this artist the piece is thickly potted and quite heavy, it is 7-1/2 inches (19.5 cm) square, 4-1/2 inches (12 cm) tall and in perfect condition. Goro has a list of shows and prizes too lengthy to go through, but the highlights are, Nitten National Art Exhibition, Nihon Shin Kogei Ten (New National Crafts Exhibition), Nihon Gendai Kogei Ten (National Modern Crafts Exhibition), Asahi Togei Ten-(First of Show and governors prize), as well as the Kofukai Ten among many others.

A mischievous bowl covered in dense ash by the late master Furutani Michio (1946-2000) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The ash is so thick as to almost pacify the ragged clay surface; its resonant peaks still visible underneath where the clay is roughest. Inside dark charring scars the back of the bowl where flame licked the surface, and rivulets of crusty green vein the gray skin. The bowl is almost 9 inches (22 cm) diameter, over 3 inches (8 cm) to the rim. Three crispy spurs are visible from within, with three more discs of raw earth circling the foot ring. The artists signature is visible along the footring, on back of the bowl. Furutani Michio is one of the Gods of Shigaraki, an artist who wrote the book on Anagama kilns, and one of the more influential artists of the second half of the 20th century. He was born in Shigaraki; graduating the Konan High School of industrial Arts, he moved to further his studies (like so many great artist before him, Kanjiro, Hamada…) at the Kyoto Institute of Industrial Arts in 1964. After breaking out on his own, he started by building an Anagama in Shigaraki in 1970, the first since the middle ages. He was a true pioneer, reviving the tradition and going on to build over thirty kilns over the next thirty years. No other artist has shown such singular dedication to a firing technique. He has been featured in the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (Japanese Traditional Crafts Exhibition), Nihon Togei Ten (Japanese Ceramic Exhibition) and the Chunichi Kokusai Togei Ten among others. A red earthen cylinder inlayed about the rim with dragonflies by JCS award winner Imai Masayuki enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The dragonflies (also called Katsumushi, or insect of victory) are inlayed into the red clay with white and buff clay, covered with resist, and a thin iron slip applied over the remainder of the vase. The slip color is so closely matched to the underlying brick-red clay one cannot see the difference. The vase is 9 inches (23 cm) tall, 4 inches (10 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. Imai was born in Osaka in 1930 and studied the plastic arts under Kusube Yaichi of Kyoto, the city he chose to make home. He has been a long standing and often exhibited member of the Nitten, receiving the Hokuto Award there. He also took the grand prize at the International Biennale of Contemporary Ceramics as well as the prestigious Japan Ceramic Society Award in 1965. He is mentor and teacher to a new generation of Japanese potters including Ichino Masahiko.
