I have long been searching for the right item by this artist to offer on the site, and here it is: blossoms and black decorate this fine cloth-textured pottery box by Ito Motohiko enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 10-1/2 x 10-1/2 x 4 inches (27 x 27 x 9.5 cm) and in excellent condition.
A similar workk by this artist was sold at Bonnhams in 209 for US$ 3,965 inc. premium
The artist is a famous Kasama potter, best known for his nunome pattern and exceptional designs. Motohiko was born in Fukuoka prefecture, 1939, and graduated the Tokyo University of Art in 1964, then moved on to advanced courses there, finishing in 1966. While at University he studied under Kato Hajime and Fujimoto Yoshimichi. It was in 1967 his first piece was accepted into the 6th Modern National Crafts Exhibition, and the next year would be spent working under to-be-Living National Treasure Matsui Kosei. His list of prizes and exhibitions is much too long to reproduce, but since 1967, he has Exhibited with the Nihon Dento Kogeiten, Nihon Dento Kogei Shinsaku Ten, Dento Kogei Musashino Ten, Tanabe Museum Modern Tea Forms Exhibition, been the subject of an NHK Television documentary, and participated in a ridiculous number of private exhibits at many of Japans top venues, and has been purchased by the current Emperor in person as well as receiving the Shijuho-sho prize from his majesty.

One of his most popular new forms, this starkly arching elevated dish is by Murakoshi Takuma is covered in white over shadows of iron with areas of thin green revealing the clay beneath, weeping giant droplets onto the swirling center. It is called a Geta-zara, named after the traditional elevated wooden sandals worn in Japan in previous eras. 29 x 13 x 11 cm (4-1/2 inches tall, 5 x just less than 12 inches long) in perfect condition, directly from the artist and enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Geta-zara.
Murakoshi Takuma is one of those enigmas who simply lives to work with clay. He does not seek to make a living through pottery, but through his primal approach has earned a following which keeps his work in high demand. He was born in Aichi prefecture in 1954 and began his stroll down the pottery path in 1980 under the tutelage of Kyoto potter Umehara Takehira. Favoring very rough Shigaraki glaze, he established his own kiln in 1997 in the Kiyomizu pottery district of Kyoto, then moved to Nagaoka in 2002. Although eschewing the world of competitive exhibitions, he has been picked up by many of Japan’s preeminent galleries, including private exhibitions at the prestigious Kuroda Toen of Tokyo’s Ginza District.

The first piece she has ever made in pure raw porcelain, here is a striking work by Yamaguchi Mio created in later 2023 titled Kamala. It is 52 cm tall, 36.5 x 33.5 cm (14-1/2 x 13 x 20-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist. It comes with a signed wooden placard.
Yamaguchi Mio was born in Aichi prefecture in 1992, and graduated advanced studies at the Aichi University of Education in 2017. While still at university, her works were selected for show at the JoryuTogei Ten Female Ceramic Artist Association Exhibition (2014). In 2016 she was awarded at the 3rd Kogei in Kanazawa Competition, Grand Prize at the Ceramic Art in the Present Tense Exhibition at the Hagi Uragami Museum as well received the governors prize at the 5oth Female Ceramic Artist Association Exhibition. In 2017 she was selected for the 11th International Ceramics Competition in Mino. She took a job as a teacher, but could not fight the need to create, so enrolled in the Tajimi City Ceramics research facility, graduating in2020. Her work is currently on view in the Chicago Institute of Arts, and was featured on the cover of the catalog for that exhibition, Radical Clay.
According to Mio: I feel that my fascination towards the natural world’s use of repetition, in bee hives and on the surface of corals, appears in my work as I consume and absorb the world around me. I like to believe that these works are natural forms made by my own hands. When I mold clay, I have a sensation that my body and consciousness blends and binds with the material and the natural world. The process of building upon each coil and applying each fold one by one with my hands is a form of meditation. Through this repetitive process I want to be able to convey my thoughts at the time in the texture, such as my struggle of swaying between the desires to live freely and falling under the pressure from societal expectations. It calms me down to observe the fingerprints left in the surface and see the traces of my existence in the clay. These works are products of what I have absorbed around me.

An agate-like cluster floats in the crystal glass of this large vessel by leading Japanese glass artist Hosoi Moto-o enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Ever inventive his works speak of the asymmetry and textures of the natural world. It is 43 cm (16-3/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Hosoi Moto-o (Motoo) was born in Osaka in 1964, and both his older brother and sister also became glass artists. After creating a studio with his brother, he ventured out on his own. He has been exhibited and or awarded at the National Modern Crafts Exhibition, (Nihon Gendai Kogei-Ten) and the Nitten National Art exhibition among others. His dynamic glass works are based on the theme of nature and time.

A moon-like orb awash in an atmosphere of rust and oxide by Hashimoto Tomonari enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled simply (as with all his works) Untitled. It is 27 cm (9-1/2 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, directly from this young and important artist. A similar piece went into the collection of the V&A in London last year.
Hashimoto Tomonari was born the son of a sculptor and has felt comfortable with the processes of creation since childhood. He graduated with a masters from the Kanazawa University of Art in March 2017, then relocated to Shigaraki. A visit to his humble home studio is eye opening. Although he comes across as shy in conversation, when you move on to the subject of art, he is all confidence. He was named a finalist for the Loewe Craft Prize in 2019 and is already making international waves around Asia. Work by him is held in the V&A in London, another piece has entered LACMA and a large sculpture has recently been installed in his home prefecture of Wakayama.

A white porcelain bowl with silver lining by the young female artist Itaya Narumi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Chawan (flower). Stylized floral motifs are raised off the raw white porcelain surface, richly textured, while the inside is sheer as gilded silk. About the delicate foot ring is glazed and sculpted with petals. The bowl is 12 cm (4-3/4 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, from the artist this year.
Itaya Narumi was born in Gifu in 1991. She graduated the Kanazawa University of Art in 2013 then graduated the Tajimi city Ceramics Research Facility in 2015. She has participated in several exhibitions since, with an emphasis on natural forms and tactile senses.

The elegance of these works by Fukami has created a stir in the collecting world which has not abated over the last 25 years. Offered here a rare wing (or blade as some describe them) object by world renowned Fukami Sueharu dating circa 2006 enclosed in the original wooden box titled “Tenku”, signed and stamped by the artist. It is mounted on a wooden base, and comes with an artist designed metal stand (all fit in the box). The sculpture is 13 inches (33 cm) long and is in perfect condition.
Fukami Sueharu is synonymous with seihakuji celadon. He has been displayed numerous times at the prestigious Nitten, Nihon Togei Ten (National Japanese Ceramic Exhibition) and Nihon Gendai Kogei Ten (National Japanese Modern Crafts Exhibition) among others. He is held in the Yale University Museum among others. For more information on this artist a quick web-search, or a look at the article highlighting his life in the March 2005 edition of Orientations Magazine will be enlightening. A fundamental form covered in gaseous rusty clouds by Hashimoto Tomonari enclosed in the original signed wooden box. On an unusual note, it is raised ever so slightly on a central foot, allowing it to float just over the surface upon which it rests. The cylinder has a split around the top, a feature the artist uses as an enhancement to the character. It is 21 cm diameter, 18.5 cm tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist before the show.

A squat form quintessentially Kishi Eiko enclosed in the original signed wooden box dated 1997. Purchased from the artist, it is 21 x 14 x 19.5 cm (8-1/4 x 5-1/2 x 7-3/4 inches) and is in excellent condition.
Kishi Eiko was born in Nara in 1948, and largely trained in the Ceramic Institute of Tekisui Museum. She was first exhibited in 1981 at the Women’s Association of Ceramic Art and was awarded that year. She took the grand prize at the 1985 Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition, and from then her list of exhibitions both within Japan and out is extensive, with works in any number of important public and private collections including the V&A and Museum of Fine Arts Boston. A rare blue gleams on the edges of this small cuboid by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Hen Hana-ire. The surface is heavily abraded as with a chisel, giving plenty of grip for the natural blown-ash glaze. It is 9 x 6.5 x 9 cm (3-1/2 x 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist.
Furutani Taketoshi was born the son of master craftsman Furutani Hirofumi in 1974, graduating the Shigaraki Industrial High School Ceramics department in 1992 before entering the Shiga prefectural Ceramics Research Facility where he learned first Small Rokuro wheel technique, graduating the following year. In 1993 he would find himself under the tutelage of Suzuki Iwau before re-entering for a second course at the Research Facility, graduating in 1995. From then he returned to the family kiln where he learned in the time-honored tradition from both his grandfather Churoku I and father Hirofumi (Churoku II). In 2013 he was named a Dento Kogeishi Traditional Craftsman. Since he has exhibited consistently at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. Subverting the self, he makes simple, organic pots which have a timeless quality. As well he dares new forms and challenges the clay with innovative techniques, coercing from the pliable earth challenging incarnations very much rooted in the now, yet still paying homage to the traditions passed down through the ages.

A set of 8 sake cups by members of Sodeisha enclosed in a singular compartmentalized wooden box titled Yose-hai and signed Sodeisha followed by the Sodeisha stamp. Sodeisha (Crawling Through Mud Association) is a group of revolutionary post war ceramic artists whose influence remains strong today. Artists in this set include: Suzuki Osamu, Toba Yoshimasa, Kanaegae Kazutaka, Kawamura Sachiko, Yoshitake Hiromu, Inoue Midori, Nakanishi Kosuke and Tsuji Kanji.
Suzuki Osamu (1926-2001) was, along with Kumakura Junkichi, Hikaru Yamada and Yagi Kazuo, one of the founding members of Sodeisha. He studied pottery at the Daini Kogyo Gakko in Kyoto. In 1948 he helped to establish Sodeisha. He received the JCS award in 1959 (and was granted the rare gold award in 1983). In 1962 he was awarded at the Prague International Ceramics Expo, the first of many international awards. In 1987 he was granted the Order of Cultural Merit by Kyoto Prefecture, followed by the same award from Kyoto City in 1993 and 1994. He exhibited with Sodeisha, The National Ceramics Exhibition (Nihon Togeiten) among others. Works by him are in too many collections to note in this small add, including the Kyoto and Tokyo National Museums of Modern Art, Victoria Albert and New York Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.

A very unusual covered urn made to hold fresh water for the tea ceremony of pristine white clay splashed with rivulets of emerald Seihakuji glaze by Tokuda Junko (Yasokichi IV) enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Seihakuji-yu Mizusashi dating from 2003. More commonly we see the pieces made in the vein of her father’s style, and I am proud to be able to offer this piece which is both feminine and quite unique to her. It is 8 inches (20 cm) diameter and in excellent condition.
Tokuda Junko (Yasokichi IV) was born the first child of future Living National Treasure Tokuda Masahiko in 1961. While on a trip to the United States in her mid-20s, the young Tokuda came across a pot from Jingdezhen, China and drew her back to the fold of the family tradition. She graduated from the Institute for Kutani in 1990 and embarked on her path as an artist. Succeeding the family name in 2010 upon the passing of her father, Junko is one of very few female heads of traditional potting family.

Do not let size fool you, this dainty work by Matsushima Iwao is flabbergasting, and will keep you wondering for days how he created it. It is core-formed glass, a process few have mastered, where variously colored rods, some infused with gold or other precious metals are heated and slowly built up over heat like forming a clay pot by coil and pinching (terribly oversimplified). According to the New Bedford Museum of Glass, “Long before the invention of the glass blow-pipe, which took place in the Roman Empire about 50 B.C., most hollow glass vessels were formed around a removable core”. This piece is roughly 6.5 cm (2-12 inches) diameter and comes complete with the original glass lid. Although traditional core-formed glass is at the basis of Matsushima’s work, he added significantly to the ancient technique; not merely imitating the ancient art, but refining and expanding it. Given the small size and fragility of his vessels, Matsushima does not sign them.
Matsushima Iwao was born in Okayama in 1946, and began delving into Core Glass forming in 1975. His work traveled the globe in 1981 as part of a show titled The Beauty of Modern Glass in 1981, the works visiting Australia, Canda and the US as well as being displayed at the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto (MOMAK). The following year he established his own studio and devoted himself fully to working professionally as a glass artist.
Works by the artist are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, the British Museum, and the Corning Glass Museum. In Japan three works by him are held in the National Crafts Museum, part of the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo (MOMAT). In addition, works are held in the Miho Museum, The Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, and Toyama City Glass Museum among many others. He is now a lecturer at the Toyama City Institute of Glass Art and a faculty member at Okayama University, both in Japan.

A large Tsubo by important Hagi artist Yamato Yasuo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Oni Hagi Enpaku O-Tsubo. This large vessel is Similar to the works published in the first major anthology on Japanese contemporary pottery Gendai Nihon No Togei (volume 8, published 1984) and dates circa that era. It is 14 inches (35 cm) diameter 15 inches (38 cm) tall and in fine condition. Due to size the cost of shipping will be accrued separately.
It is likely no collector of Hagi will need an introduction to this innovative artist. Yamato Yasuo was born in 1933 to a long line of Hagi potters. He learned under his father Harunobu and grandfather Shoroku. One of the first to challenge many traditions associated with Hagi Yaki. He was displayed with Sodeisha, Kofukai, the Nitten, Nihon Dento Togei Ten, Nihon Togei Ten among many others. His list of prizes is most impressive and much too long to write here and his influence on the world of Hagi pottery will likely be the source of a thesis someday in the not too distant future! He has been named an important cultural asset of Yamaguchi Prefecture (ken Juyo Mukei Bunkazai) and is held in the collection of the British Museum among many others.

A voluminous Chawan Tea bowl by Sawada Hayato enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kakusai Chawan. The hand built angular form is slip glazed with black clay inlayed creating paleolithic pattens tinged with red. It is roughly 15 cm (6 inches) wide, 9.5 cm (just under 4 inches) tall and in new condition. Sawada Hayato was born in Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture in 1978, and graduated Ryutsu Keizai University in 2000, going on to further study at the Tokyo University of Social Welfare from which he graduated in 2004. The following year he was selected for the 52nd Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition where he would be awarded in 2012 the Japan Kōgei Association Award. In 2013 he was awarded at the Kikuchi Biennale. Since his work has been shown in Shanghai, Europe, London and the United States. His work is held in the colletions of the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum, Crocker Art Museum, and Cincinnati Art Museum.

A fabulous faceted Iga vessel by Atarashi Manabu enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The rough textured clay is colored by the flame, burnt red and charred gray to black, with a single bead of molten ash which crystalized into glass as it rolled around the shoulder out of the flames. This is a versatile vessel which offers differing scenes for every viewing angle. The vase is 23 cm (9 inches) tall, 16.5 x 13 cm (6-1/2 x 5 inches) and in excellent condition, directly from the artist this summer.
Atarashi Manabu has been growing in popularity as one of the leaders in the Iga pottery tradition since the first time I saw his work nearly 20 years ago when visiting the family showroom in Iga village. Born in 1973 in Osaka son of the second generation artist and one of the leading revivalists of the Iga tradition in post war Japan, Atarashi Kanji. He graduated the literature department of Kansai University in 1995, moving to apprentice under his father a few years later. In 2002 he built his first anagama Kiln, and held his first of a multitude of solo exhibitions. Intensely fired multiple times to achieve the bidoro glass puddles and landscape effects which define his aesthetic, the geometric works add a contemporary sensibility to the traditional Iga style and transcend the realm of utilitarian crafts breaking into the sculptural domain. His work has proven innovative and challenging to the norm, taking his fathers tradition into the 21st century.

A lively bowl of flowers in blue and gold by Nakashima Katsuko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hana no wan. The flowers seem to beam out with glee, each ringed in golden light. The bowl is beautifully formed rising, from an elegant foot. It is 15 cm (6 inches) diameter, 8 cm (3 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.
Nakashima Katsuko graduated the Osaka School of Art and Design and first garnered attention with a silver prize at the Nihon Tojiki Ceramics Design competition in 1984. Her works have been selected for display and awarded at the Asahi Gendai Kogeiten Contemporary Craft Exhibition (awarded 1997), Mino International Ceramics Festival (Bronze award 1998) , Gyeonggi-do International Ceramics Exhibition, Korea, Gold prize in 2003 and Grand Prize at the Kobe International Ceramics Competition among a host of others.

This cage of raw white porcelain by Goto Miho, like dried bones, contains a glistening membrane, a mysterious ceramic sculpture by this young artist from her Heartbeat of the Skin series. It is 14 x 15 x 16.5 cm (roughly 5-1/2 x 6 x 6-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist. When prompted about her message she said: I feel that there is something vaguely present that is never visible in my everyday life. It always speaks to me like a pulse beating deep within my thin skin, insisting on its existence. Although I have been expressing myself through painting for nearly ten years, now that I think about it, I feel like I've always been struggling to discover its true identity.
When I encountered ceramics for the first time, I suddenly felt that I had found the means to respond to this vague phantom within.
In this medium I constantly interact with unknown experiences; I am able to feel a certain sense of this diaphanous existence and create works through which I can touch people's five senses; gradually giving back to society. For the first time, I feel like I am a part of this world.
Goto Miho entered the ceramics course at Osaka University of Arts in 2021, already an advanced student initially trained in painting. She was awarded at the 14th Prince Takamado Memorial Netsuke Competition in 2022. In 2023 whe entered Ceramic Design Institute of Tajimi City, and the same year was recipient of the 9th Contemporary Art and Culture Foundation Ceramic Artist Support Grant. Her work was also selected for the Ceramic Synergy Exhibition held at the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art. This is the first time her work has been offered to an overseas audience.
