Gold shatters on the blue surface of this large vase by legendary female potter Ono Hakuko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Yuri Kinsai Hana Tsubo. It is 29 cm (11-1/2 inches) diameter, 31.5 cm (12-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
From Aichi prefecture, Ono Hakuko was trained by her father initially in the ceramic arts. However, she was most strongly influenced by the great experimentive artist Kato Hajime (1901-1968) and his work with gold. This affected her own style deeply, and it can be said that she carried on his research. She was awarded the JCS award in 1980, one of Japans most prestigious ceramics awards. In 1992 she was named an important cultural asset (Juyo mukei bunkazai) of Saga prefecture. Bucking the traditional image here is another of Japans great cultural assets who fought against a system of prejudice to rise to the top and it is an honor to be able to offer something by her. Blue glaze fills in the embedded patterns in this Tokkuri by Living National Treasure Shimaoka Tatsuzo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Gosu Zogan Jomon Tokkuri. The vibrant blue is a bit of a departure for this artist whose work is often sedate, relying on the texture and patterns of the Jomon rope design over dependence on colorful glazes. It is 15 cm (6 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Shimaoka Tatsuzo (1919-2007) was born in Tokyo and enrolled in the Tokyo Kogei Daigaku Ceramics division in 1939. The following year he would meet Mashiko Mingei potter Hamada Shoji, and the course of his life was thought set, graduating in 1941. However he was drafted in 1942, and sent to Burma where he would remain until repatriation after the cessation of hostilities. In 1946 Tatsuzo apprenticed under Hamada who encouraged him to find his own voice, which he did when in 1950 took part in research into ancient Jomon potteries with Shirasaki Shunji, which would have a profound influence on his style. Working with Jomon rope patterns, Tatsuzo set out to create a style unique to himself, establishing his own kiln in 1954. Widely exhibited, awarded and influential in his lifetime, he received the Japan Ceramic Society Gold award in 1994, one of the highest honors for a Japanese ceramic artist, and was designated a Living National Treasure (Juyo Mukei Bunkazai or Ningenkokuho) in 1996 culminating with receiving the Order of the Rising Sun in 1999.

A 30 cm (1 foot) square cube in oxidized lunar color by Hashimoto Tomonari enclosed in the original signed wooden box. By volume this seems in person much larger than it actually is. Hashimoto Tomonari was born the son of a sculptor and has felt comfortable with the processes of creation since childhood. He graduated with a masters from the Kanazawa University of Art in March 2017, then relocated to Shigaraki. A visit to his humble home studio is eye opening. Although he comes across as shy in conversation, when you move on to the subject of art, he is all confidence. He was named a finalist for the Loewe Craft Prize in 2019 and is making international waves around the world. Work by him is held in the V&A in London, LACMA and a large sculpture has recently been installed in his home prefecture of Wakayama.

A signature work in gold Shino by Suzuki Tomio enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Yohen Kin Shino Hachi (Shimmering Altered Gold Shino Bowl). It is 10-1/2 inches (27 cm) diameter, 5 inches (13 cm) tall and in excellent condition.
Suzuki Tomio was born in 1948 in Yawata, Kyoto, and has spent his life in the perfection of Shino glazing. He did not move for independence until establishing his own kiln at the age of 40. One of his most notable advances in Shino glazing is the development of Yohen-kin or transformed gold Shino. First introduced in 2003, this type of shino is an opulent, golden glaze and has come to serve as the predecessor for a number of lustrous glazes in the artist's growing body of shino work. In 2011, his work was acquired by the Philadelphia Museum of Art for display in their East Asian Art collection and in 2012 by the University of Durham's Oriental Museum in the United Kingdom. He holds regular exhibitions across Japan at major department store galleries, including Takashimaya, Hanshin, and Mitsukoshi.

A voluminous Tsubo by Yamato Yasuo enclosed in the original wooden box titled Hagi Bisai Kohiki-kake Tsubo and dating circa 1990. It is 14 inches (36 cm) diameter, 12 inches (31 cm) tall and in fine condition. Due to size this piece will require special shipping consideration.
It is likely no collector of Hagi will need an introduction to this innovative artist. Yamato Yasuo was born in 1933 to a long line of Hagi potters. He learned under his father Harunobu and grandfather Shoroku. One of the first to challenge many traditions associated with Hagi Yaki. He was displayed with Sodeisha, Kofukai, the Nitten, Nihon Dento Togei Ten, Nihon Togei Ten among many others. His list of prizes is most impressive and much too long to list and his influence on the world of Hagi pottery will likely be the source of a thesis someday in the not too distant future! He has been named an important cultural property of Yamaguchi Prefecture (ken Juyo Mukei Bunkazai) and is held in the collection of the British Museum among many others.

A bold set of six contemporary White Bizen Beer Mugs, each entirely unique with slightly different hada by Kitano Katsuhiko enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Over the pale, sheer clay deposits of ash glaze, goma kasu and hi-iro scorching combine with smoky black staining for a very unique experience. Each cup is roughly 4-1/2 inches (11.5 cm) tall, 3 inches (7.5 cm) diameter and all are in perfect condition.
After graduating Nihon Daigaku (University of Japan) Katsuhiko worked (like many before him including Hamada Shoji and Kawai Kanjiro) at the Kyoto Ceramics Research Facility. After establishing his own atelier, the artist has been displayed at the Nihon Dento Togei Ten (National Traditional Ceramics Exhibition) Nihon Togei Ten (National Ceramics Exhibition) Chunichi Kokusai Togei Ten as well as the Nihon Bijutsu Kogei Ten where he received the Kogei Daisho prize.

A pair of celadon Te-shoku candle sticks by contemporary potter Orita Tatsuya enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The elegantly sculpted base rises to a dish in which is imbedded a brass pin to secure the candle, with a long tapering handle. The handle features a bamboo nodule decoration in the center, with a curl of clay at the end, the rough edges of which, like a shaving of planed wood contrasting with the perfection of the form. Each is roughly 9-1/2 inches (18 cm) long, 4-1/2 inches 11 cm) tall and in excellent condition.
Born in Kagawa prefecture in 1964, Tatsuya entered the Seto Ceramics Research facility in 1984 before moving to apprentice under Takita Koichi. He moved to establish his own kiln in 1989. Twice prized at the Nihon Mingei-Kan Ten, he has been exhibited at the Nihon Dento Kogei-Ten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibition) as well as the Nihon Togei Ten (National Ceramics Exhibtion) where he received the Nihon Togei-Ten Prize in 1999 and the Mombu Kagaku Daijin Sho prize in 2009. In 2008 his entry was purchased by the Imperial Household Agency.

It is a privilege to introduce this incredible sculpture by the young female ceramicist Furui Akiko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Tsubomi (bud) dating from 2017. It is made up of hundreds of rolled sheafs of shaved clay covered in a white slip and fused together. The amount of work which goes into each sculpture is obvious, making her work great value.
Furui Akiko was born in Aichi prefecture in 1987. She graduated the Aichi University of Education in 2010, and had her first pieces exhibited both in and out of Japan that same year. She has since been featured in a number of events both domestic and abroad. A rising star in the Sculptural Ceramics World, she is, along with Shingu Sayaka and Tanaka Tomomi, an artist with a strong following and a distinct style all her own.

Celadon is all about form, and here Yagi Akira has nailed it with this expertly executed architectural silhouette covered in pale blue-green glaze and enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 4-1/2 inches (14 cm) tall and in excellent condition.
This name is a must have in any collection of modern Japanese Pottery. Akira was born in Kyoto in 1955, son of avant garde Yagi Kazuo (1918-1979) one of the founding members of Sodeisha. Akira was voted one of the 20 most important living artists by Honoho, Japans premier printed ceramic forum. Works by the artist are held in the British Museum, Victoria Albert Museum, Cleveland Art Museum, Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian and Tokyo Muesum of Modern Art among many others. He was also the recipient of the Japan Ceramic Society (JCS) award in 1998, one in a long and prestigious list of awards.

Energetic strokes of black decorate this small flower vase by Shigemori Yoko, perfect for a single red Camellia flower. I love the fact you can clearly see her fingers pushing back the glaze along the base. It is 12.5 cm (5 inches) tall, the same diameter, enclosed in a signed wooden box titled Kotsubo.
Shigemori Yoko (1953-2021) was born in Kagoshima. Yoko came to Kyoto where she initially studied painting at the Kyoto Tankidai Art College, then moved to ceramics at the Kyoto Municipal Art University where she studied traditional pottery techniques under Kondo Yutaka before entering advanced courses under avant-garde Yagi Kazuo, graduating in 1979. Her first solo exhibitions were held while still a student at Gallery Iteza in Kyoto. She eschewed the world of competitive exhibitions in favor of the intimacy of private galleries, and her list of solo exhibitions is expansive. She received the Yagi Kazuo prize in 1986 and 1988 at the Nihon Gendai Togeiten National Modern Ceramics Exhibition. An unusual form by Mori Toshiaki enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Bizen Te-bachi (handled basin). The basin has been paired off at the top, the ribbons of clay looping over each other to form the winding handle. A most unusual design. A blast of ash decorates the exposed upper surfaces, the basin itself rust colored raw clay. It is 20 cm (8 inches) diameter, 14.5 cm (5-3/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist this summer.
Mori Toshiaki was born the first son of traditional Bizen potter Mori Yasushi in 1982. Growing up in the family kiln, he entered the Bizen ceramic center in 2005, and after a year of study there continued in the family tradition. He has exhibited with the Okayama Ken-Ten art exhibition, Nihon Dento Kogeiten Traditional Crafts Exhibition, Gendai Chato Ten Modern Tea Ceramics Exhibition and the Chanoyu Zokei Ten (New forms in Tea Exhibition in addition to being exhibited in New York, Taiwan, and London.

The surface of this rough slab is like an eroded plain with rivulets of glass running to a clouded pool in the center, signed along the edge and enclosed in the original signed wooden box by Sugimoto Sadamitsu. It is roughly 20-1/2 x 8-1/2 x 3 inches (52 x 21.5 x 8 cm) and in perfect condition.
Sadamitsu was born in Tokyo in 1935. A strong adherent to the Zen tradition, Sadamitsu established his own kiln at 33, receiving the kiln name from his mentor Daitokuji priest Tachibana Oki. His Zen studies have refined the spiritual side of his work, and all of his wood fired ceramics have a quiet and confident power. He has spent his life in the research of kohiki, Shigaraki Iga and Raku wares, and is more than well known in tea circles for the discriminating soul of his works. A striking floral image decorates this odd shaped guinomi made to not be put down by Mizumoto Kayoko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Obana Guinomi. An Obana is a male flower, or a flower with only stamens and no pistils; lacking female reproductive function. The cup is 6.5 x 12 x 7 cm (2-1/2 x 4-1/2 x 3 inches) and is in excellent condition, dating from last year.
Mizumoto Kayoko was born in Ishikawa, home to the Kutani Ceramic Tradition, in 1971. She initially apprenticed in Yuzen Textile dying, where she worked for seven years, before teaching herself basic pottery techniques beginning in 1999. Having come to the traditiaonl Kutani world from outside, she was free to develop her own voice unfettered by traditional influences. In 2001 she entered a traditional kiln where she mastered the craft, and established her own kiln in 2010. Her work ahs been featured in prominent shows both in and out of Japan.

A stratified bloc of hollowed out Shigaraki clay by female pottery pioneer Koyama Kiyoko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen Yu Kaku Hanaire. A thick coating of blown natural ash glaze has settled on the shoulders, while the layers of earth below show a dusting of color on top, but rich red in the shadows with plenty of small inclusions for the eye to play with. It is 22.5 cm (9 inches) tall, roughly 10 cm (4 inches) square and in excellent condition.
Koyama Kiyoko was the subject of the film Hi-Bi (2005) and the recent NHK television drama Scarlet. She is the preeminent pioneering female wood firing artist in Japan. Born in Sasebo, Nagasaki in 1938, she went to Shigaraki village, home of one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. There she studied the traditional techniques, and bore the brunt of centuries of discrimination against women. A wild ceramic sculpture in rich dark iron glaze by Takatsu Mio enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Soko ni Tsuiki Suru (Take a Breath). Mio is an amazing person, very intense when she works, very casual when she is not. She will happily take a hammer to a piece after months of work, if it does not meet her inner criteria, thus her production is quite low, but quality is extremely high. This piece is 37 cm (14-1/2 inches) long and in excellent condition, from the artist this summer.
Takatsu Mio (b. 1976) was raised in Gifu prefecture among the scattered kilns of Mino. She graduated the Osaka University of Arts Sculpture Department in 1999, moving on to advanced studies which she completed in 2001. Her first exhibited works were in 1999, and then again in Tokyo in 2001. The following year she exhibited with the 6th International Ceramics Exhibition in Mino with several private exhibitions over the following years in some of Japans top venues. In 2005 she made her overseas debut. In 2009 her work was featured in Women Ceramic Artists in the 21st Century (Paramita Museum/Mie Japan) 2011 saw her work accepted into the Faenza International Ceramics Exhibition in Italy, as well as the Nihon Togeiten National Ceramics Exhibition.

Ash flows through and fills the deeply crevassed surface of this closed bottle form by Furutani Hirofumi (Churoku II) enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Kuchi Jime Yohen Hanaire. All one must do is turn it a few degrees to get a new aspect or a new point of contemplation. Shinshoku, blasted green, olive fingering, and charcoal black all studded with the famous Shiseki of Shigaraki. It is 18.5 cm (7-1/2 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.
Furutani Hirofumi (b. 1948) is the real deal, a Shigaraki potter trained under his father, recipient of tradition and knowledge who does not say much. After graduating school, he went to work in a large production kiln where he studied firing technique and clay preparation. He then returned to the family studio where he headed up the preparation and firing, while, taking a second position in that respectful Japanese way to his long-lived father, who strictly tortured clay, relying on his son to do all the “real work.” The Japanese title for such a person is: Ennoshita no chikara mochi (The true strength hidden under the eaves). A decade after the passing of Churoku, every day you will find him in search of the natural phenomena born from the dialog between soil and flame and the elements. He oversees kneading and preparing the clay, as well as the kiln work, stacking and preparations for firing, creating his own pieces while allowing his son to take the fore. He is not competing or seeking fame, just quietly making pots in that very Japanese way, treading the path of the Unknown Craftsman.

Mastery of the Oribe genre is apparent in this Chawan by Yamada Kazu which comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kuro-Oribe Chawan. It is 13 cm (just over 5 inches) diameter, 9 cm (3-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Yamada Kazu was born in Tokoname city in 1954, one of Japans ancient kiln areas, into a line of potters. He would have been influenced early on by his father, Yamada Kenkichi and uncle living National Treasure Yamada Jozan. He graduated the Osaka Art University before moving to Echizen to establish his first kiln. He was propelled to international fame after building an Anagama kiln in Germany in 1988. He has been displayed domestically at the Asahi Togeiten, Nihon Togeiten and Chunichi Kokusai Togeiten as well as a host of private exhibitions in prominent galleries and department stores , and his innovative forms and designs are in high demand.

A lovely lavender-tinged gray vase swept with brush strokes like fleeting snow in the Utsutsukawa-yaki tradition by Yoshioka Gagyu enclosed in the original singed wooden box titled Shirasagi Hanaire (White Egret Vase). Two birds stand against the cold on a long barren branch tinged with silver. Truly exquisite. The vase is 19.5 cm (just less than 8 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Gagyu’s first exhibited piece at the age of 20 in 1955 took the governors prize at the Nagasaki Kenten Prefectural Art Exhibition. That was the beginning of a prestigious career prolific with awards culminating in being named an important cultural property for Nagasaki prefecture in 1975 (the state version of a living national treasure) he has also displayed with the Nihon Dento Kogeiten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibition) among many others, and has an impressive number of private exhibitions. He is credited with reviving the lost art of Utsutsukawa-yaki, and is a very important figure in modern Arita.

Shizen-yu ash glaze and deposits crust the surface of this large Shigaraki Tsubo by Hoshino Ryosai enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 13 inches (33 cm) tall, 10 inches (25 cm) diameter and in excellent condition.
Ryosai was born in Fukuoka, on Japan’s Southern Main Island in 1939, and was raised during the impoverished war years. Perhaps it is this will to live instilled through hardship which invigorates so much of this dynamic artists work. He is held in the collection of the Asia Pacific Museum, the Vatican and Ise Shrine, the heart of Japanese Shinto, among others. A large organic Kurinuki Mizusashi in deep rich lavender glaze with ash charring by Kaneta Masanao enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 10 x 9-1/2 x 8 inches (25 x 24 x 20 cm) and in fine condition, dating circa 1995. Kaneta Masanao (born 1953) likely needs no introduction, certainly one of Hagi’s most well known names, he has been displayed both nationally and internationally innumerable times including the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten National Traditional Crafts Exhibition, Nihon Togei Ten National Ceramics Exhibtion, Chunichi Kokusai Togeiten Ceramics Exhibition, . His pieces are in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum and Museum of Modern Art Brooklyn. Ise Shrine, home to the Japanese Gods, holds a Tea Bowl by him as well.

A glowering charred dark sake cup by Matsuo Takaaki enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Iga Shizen-yu Youhen Nozoki Hai. It is 6cm (just over 2 inches) diameter, 7.5cm (3 inches) tall and in excellent condition. Matsuo Takaaki was born in Yokohama in 1938. He began studies under Tsuji Seimei at Renkoji in 1960 where he trained for over 15 years. He became independent in 1975 and built a climbing kiln in Tama. Since he has been exhibited with the Issuikai but mainly focuses on the intimacy of private exhibitions.

Fresh out of the oven, here is a delicious treat to start the new year right, a crusty dancing form by Murakoshi Takuma enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Mimitsuki Hana-ire. Not only does the vase itself feel alive with movement, but the encrustations of ash and glossy molten ash glaze seem to be still in formation, as if it is still settling in the kiln. It is 26 cm (10 inches) tall and in perfect condition.
Murakoshi Takuma is one of those enigmas who simply lives to work with clay. He does not seek to make a living through pottery, but through his primal approach has earned a following which keeps his work in high demand. He was born in Aichi prefecture in 1954 and began his stroll down the pottery path in 1980 under the tutelage of Kyoto potter Umehara Takehira. Favoring very rough Shigaraki glaze, he established his own kiln in 1997 in the Kiyomizu pottery district of Kyoto, then moved to Nagaoka in 2002. Although eschewing the world of competitive exhibitions, he has been picked up by many of Japan’s preeminent galleries, including private exhibitions at the prestigious Kuroda Toen of Tokyo’s Ginza District.

A sumptuous wood grain bowl by Tanaka Eiko covered outside in thin black lacquer, the inside clear to best present the exquisite grains of the wood. Her tree of choice is the Horse Chestnut (Jap. Tocchi), which has unparalleled grain patterns, here visible through the black outside as a soft glow about the center of the bowl. Inside black lines like an abstract ink painting decorating the straight grains. She brings the rim up to an extremely thin edge, abrupt, both delicate and challenging. The bowl is 12.5 cm (5 inches) diameter and in excellent condition. It is signed on the base and comes in her red paper box with shiori card.
Tanaka Eiko was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1983, and graduated the Aichi Prefectural University of Education lacquer department in 2005. The following year her work was first presented at the Takaoka Craft Competition, the following year entered into the salon of Nakashima Torao, and had her work presented at the Ishikawa Dento Kogeiten Traditional Crafts Exhibition. She graduated the Ishikawa Prefectural Wood turning technology training center in 2010, establishing her own studio in 2012. Since her work has been exhibited around Japan, New York, Indonesia, Taiwan, Germany, Holland, Singapore and Thailand. She says: “The Japanese horse chestnut is a tree with great individuality. To bring out the personality of each tree I must confront it sincerely and draw out its strength by using red and black, the colors I love”.

A riotous sculpture covered in thin glaze pooling and glimmering in the crevices by Yamaguchi Mio accompanied by a signed wooden placard titled Mu (Nothingness) dating from 2021. It is 28 x 32 x 46 cm (11 x 13 x 18 inches) and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist.

Yamaguchi Mio was born in Aichi prefecture in 1992, and graduated advanced studies at the Aichi University of Education in 2017. While still at university, her works were selected for show at the JoryuTogei Ten Female Ceramic Artist Association Exhibition (2014). In 2016 she was awarded at the 3rd Kogei in Kanazawa Competition, Grand Prize at the Ceramic Art in the Present Tense Exhibition at the Hagi Uragami Museum as well received the governors prize at the 5oth Female Ceramic Artist Association Exhibition. In 2017 she was selected for the 11th International Ceramics Competition in Mino. She took a job as a teacher, but could not fight the need to create, so enrolled in the Tajimi City Ceramics research facility, graduating in2020. Her work is currently on view in the Chicago Institute of Arts, and was featured on the cover of the catalog for that exhibition, Radical Clay.
According to Mio: I feel that my fascination towards the natural world’s use of repetition, in bee hives and on the surface of corals, appears in my work as I consume and absorb the world around me. I like to believe that these works are natural forms made by my own hands. When I mold clay, I have a sensation that my body and consciousness blends and binds with the material and the natural world. The process of building upon each coil and applying each fold one by one with my hands is a form of meditation. Through this repetitive process I want to be able to convey my thoughts at the time in the texture, such as my struggle of swaying between the desires to live freely and falling under the pressure from societal expectations. It calms me down to observe the fingerprints left in the surface and see the traces of my existence in the clay. These works are products of what I have absorbed around me.

A set of five long narrow plates by Minami Ayako enclosed in the original signed wooden box upon which is written the titles of each dish. Each dish is uniquely decorated, with Rimpa style waves, flowers in snow, a golden sun peering from behind clouds, the moon rising through the mist, or just swirling colorful clouds. A beautiful set perfect for tapas or small hors d’ oeuvres (or perhaps eel for the daring crowd). Each plate is 6 x 34.5 cm (2-1/2 x 13-1/2 inches) and all are in new condition.
Minami Ayako was born the daughter of Kutani artist Minami Shigmasa in Ishikawa prefecture, 1984. While working at the family kiln, she studied, graduating from the Kutani Prefectural Ceramic Research Facility in 2007. The following year her work was awarded at the Kyoto Kogei Crafts Biennale and was selected for exhibition at the Nihon Dento Kogeiten National Traditional Crafts Exhibition. Her work has since been exhibited there, as well as the Ishikawa Traditional Crafts Exhibition (awarded), Kanazawa Crafts Exhibition and Traditional Kutani Ware Crafts Exhibition (collected by the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art). She received honorable mention at the 73rd Issuikai Exhibition in 2011.

A colorful Guinomi Sake cup by Shibata Masamitsu enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The design, while technically perfect, is playful with soft colors which allow the viewer a childish sense of wonder. It is 6 cm diameter, 7.5 cm (3 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.
Shibata Masamitsu was born in Toki City, the heart of Mino country, in 1961. After graduating from Kyotos Ritsumeikan Daigaku University, He spent a year at the Tajimi Ceramics Research Facility. His work is an extension of his personality, a little quirky, a little cute, always colorful!

An iconic bowl flaring out in pure celadon by Fukami Sueharu enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled simply Hachi (here he is using a play on sound, as he uses the Kanji character for eight pronounced Hachi in place of the character for bowl with the same reading). It is 22 cm (8-1/2 inches) diameter and in excellent condition.
Fukami Sueharu is synonymous with seihakuji celadon. He has been displayed numerous times at the prestigious Nitten, Nihon Togei Ten (National Japanese Ceramic Exhibition) and Nihon Gendai Kogei Ten (National Japanese Modern Crafts Exhibition) among others. He is held in the Yale University Museum among others. For more information on this artist a quick web-search, or a look at the article highlighting his life in the March 2005 edition of Orientations Magazine will be enlightening. One of the most beautiful pieces I have ever seen by this pioneering Shino artist, a spectacular Mizusahi by Okabe Mineo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled E-shino Mizusashi. It is 17 cm (6-3/4 inches) diameter, 16 cm (6-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Okabe Mineo (1919-1990) was born the first son of important artist Kato Tokuro, however the relationship with his father was volatile. When he was 9 Tokuro moved the young family to Seto, where Mineo would graduate the Aichi Prefectural Ceramics School in 1937. After a year at the family kiln, he moved to Tokyo, then joined the army in 1940. He fought against the Americans and would spend several years as a prisoner of war in the Philippines, repatriated to Japan in 1947. He returned to Aichi prefecture, leaving enough distance between himself and his estranged family, and with his wife began producing pottery in Toyoda. In 1953 he met Koyama Fujio; that same year he was awarded the Hokuto prize at the Nitten, and his work was collected by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This was the true beginning of his career. In 1955 he received the JCS award, one of the highest honors for a Japanese potter. By the mid ‘60s. he moved to celadon ware. He changed his name from Kato to Okabe in 1978, to honor his wife who supported his efforts for so many years.

A sculpture in black glaze by Yoshitake Hiroshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Sakuhin B and dating circa 1980. Very much in the vein of this important avant-garde organization, it has a great deal of presence compacted into a small space. A nearly identical work is published in the book: Sodeisha, 35th Anniversary (Sodeisha, Sanjugoshunen Kinenhan, 1983) which is titled Suikan (Inebriated). Interestingly, Suikan is also a homonym for water pipes. The sculpture is roughly 10-1/2 x 7-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches (19 x 27 x 6 cm) and is in excellent condition.
Yoshitake Hiroshi (Hiromu, 1938-2010) was born in Kyoto in 1938, entering the Kyoto Yoshigaoka School Ceramics Department in 1953. A member of Sodeisha, he currently resides in Nagano Prefecture. student. Along with Kawakami Rikizo and Kusano Fumihiko he helped to form the group Magma in 1958, centered on Outdoor sculpture and non functional forms. He began studying under Yagi Kazuo in 1964, becoming a member of Sodeisha in 1968. His works were selected for International Exhibition by that group (see Sodeisha Avant Garde Japanese Ceramics, 1979 plate 55). He moved to Nagano prefecture in 1990.

An open mouth sings in French on the side of this flattened bottle by preeminent Avant-Garde potter Yagi Kazuo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hakushi-mon Henko. It is 10-1/2 inches (26.5 cm) tall, 7 x 2-3/4 inches (18 x 7 cm) and is in excellent condition. Dating circa1950. Yagi Kazuo (1918-1979) was one of the most influential Avant Garde potters of 20th century Japan. He was born into the family of potter Yagi Isso, a noted specialist in fine Chinese and traditional Japanese forms and glazes. Kazuo studied at the Kyoto Ceramics Research Facility, like many great potters before him including his father and the founders of the Mingei movement, Kawai Kanjiro and Hamada Shoji. While there immersed in traditional forms, he joined the Ceramic Sculpture Association of Japan, and in 1939 was exhibited with them. Drafted shortly thereafter, he was sent to China, but quickly returned to japan with illness, for which he was discharged, and went back to sculpture, very much influenced by Western Art movements of the time. The war years were difficult of course, but following Japan’s Surrender, Kazuo was accepted into the Nitten National Exhibition. Like many young artists who had been held in the yolk of Japan’s strict military regime, he was grasping for something new, and his work expressed a strong desire to throw off the weight of traditionalism and function. So it was in 1948 when Kazuo, along with a number of other potters including Suzuki Osamu, Yamada Hikaru and Kumakura Junkichi, founded the Iconic Sodeisha Group. The work of this group would change forever the perception of Japanese pottery, and he would go down as one of the most influential potters of the 20th century.

A humble crackled white bowl by Koie Ryoji enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled simply Chawan. Inside drops of spilled ink and a bit of blank canvas (raw earth) like a minimalist painting from the 1950s. It is 14.5 cm (5-5/8 inches) diameter, 8 cm (3-1/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Koie Ryoji (1938-2020)) was born in Tokoname and graduated the Tokoname industrial school before moving on to work at a tile factory in 1957, where he would lose two fingers in an industrial accident. Faced with this handicap, he entered the City Ceramics Research Facility in 1962 where he furthered his studies and his unique style began to coagulate. In 1966 he established his own studio. By the early 70s his work was garnering attention overseas and he has since been largely displayed and prized culminating in a lifetime with the Japan Ceramic Society Gold Award in 2008, the most prestigious of pottery prizes in Japan. Work by him is held in the collections of the National Museums of Modern Art in both Tokyo and Kyoto, Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art, Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Idemitsu Museum, The Museum of Fine Art in Gifu, Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Seoul Museum of Art in Korea, and the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia among many other public and private collections.

A very large Kutani Vase decorated by eccentric Zen Priest and painter Shimizu Kosho enclosed in the original sgned wooden box. The outer surfaceis covered in genuine gold, overwhich has been brushed the decorative calligraphy reading……Hana mushin Maneku chocho, mushin tazuneru shin. The box lid is attributed within to having been fired at the Kutani Shoryu kiln by Kosho himself, and the pot is signed on the base Ryu. The vase is over 12 inches (31 cm) tall, 9 inches (22 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. Kosho (1911-1999) was a unique and prolific artist-priest studied in the eccentric painting style associated with Nara. He was long time abbot of the massive Todai-ji temple complex in Nara, home of the great Buddha. Like many priests, he began producing art to propogate his teachings later in life. He proved extremely popular, the nonchalant style plucking a string in the Japanese heart. He worked in various media, refusing to be defined, and his work is as eccentric as it is unique, and highly sought in Japan.

An elegant basin by Fukami Sueharu enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Seihakuji Sanso Hachi. It is 21 cm (8-1/4 inches) diameter, 8.5 cm (3-1/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition. Fukami Sueharu is synonymous with seihakuji celadon. Born in Kyoto in 1947, he graduated the Kyoto Ceramics Research School in 1965. It was in 1981 that he was first recognized followed by grand prize at the Chunichi International Ceramics Exhibition the following year. In ’84 he would be awarded at the Nitten National Art Exhibition, and in ’85 received grand prize at the Faenza International Ceramic Exhibition, Italy. He would receive the prestigious JCS award in 1992 and the Order of Cultural Merit for Kyoto soon thereafter. He has been displayed at the Nitten, Nihon Togei Ten (National Japanese Ceramic Exhibition) Chunichi Kokusai Togeiten, and Nihon Gendai Kogei Ten (National Japanese Modern Crafts Exhibition) among many others. In 2011 he was exhibited in the Clark Center, California, and was one of a very few potters to receive the important JCS Gold Award in 2012. His work is held in the National Museums of Modern Art in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, an astounding fact for a living artist. An exquisite pottery form by Kawase Takeshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hakuji Hori Hanamoyo Sara. The fluted edge rises around a central garden filled with scrolling florals. It is 14 inches (35 cm) diameter and in fine condition.
Kawase Takeshi (1953-2007) was born the second son of Kawase Chikushun II in Kanagawa prefecture. He began in the family kiln, eventually breaking off to establish his own kiln in 1986. He was the subject of a television show in 1999, and was ascending to greatness when he died suddenly at the age of 54. He is remembered for Hakuji, Aka-e and Kinsai styles.

A Pottery box by pioneering female artist Tsuboi Asuka made as a flowing roll of golden brocade inspired by traditional textiles enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 19 x 15 x 17 cm (7-1/2 x 6 x 6-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition.
Tsuboi Asuka was born in Osaka in 1932, but the family moved to Tokyo when she was 12. She graduated the prestigious and progressive Jiyu Gakkuen (A progressive girls School established in 1921) then moved to Kyoto in 1953, Kyoto, the city she has called home for half a century, where she would spend a year at the Sentsuji Yusai Kobo before enlisting under Living National Treasure Tomimoto Kenkichi. Her first works were exhibited that year at the Shinshokogeikai (where she would be awarded in 1955). She worked to establish the Joryu Togei Ten Ceramic Exhibition for female artists in 1957, to allow women a venue to exhibit works in what was then a very male dominated field. In 1961 she was accepted into the Asahi Togeiten Ceramic Exhibition, and in 1966 would be selected to represent contemporary Japanese ceramics in China, the following year saw he take a study trip to Korea, and in 1970 to Thailand while her work was exhibited at the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, which would purchase her work in ’71 . She would be awarded at the Canadian International Ceramic Exhibition in 1973, and since her work has been exhibited throughout the globe. Here work to promote the arts was recognized in 1988 with the Kyoto Prefectural Order of Arts and Culture Award, and in 1991 with the Kyoto city Order of Cultural Merit, and again in 1992 with the prefectural Order of Cultural Merit. All culminated in her receiving the Japan Ceramic Society Gold prize, perhaps the most important award allowed a potter, in 2004. Her work can be found in Museum collections including several works in both the Museums of Modern Art in Tokyo and Kyoto, Fukui and Wakayama Prefectural Museums of Art, Suntory Museum, Shiga Togei No Mori Museum, Ariana Museum, Yale University Museum and The International Ceramics Museum in Faenza. According to the book Touch Fire: Tsuboi Asuka's influence on the ceramic arts of Japan cannot be overstated. As one of the first women to aggressively challenge the male hierarchy, she forged a role for women ceramic artists that previously did not exist in Japan. Tsuboi was the charismatic leader of the influential Kyoto women's ceramic group Joryū Tōgei (Women's Association of Ceramic Art) when it was first formed in 1957. This group was pivotal not only in providing a platform for women to participate as artists in their own right, but in giving them the opportunity to present their challenging work to the public.

A delightful small tea bowl by one of the greatest potters of the 20th century, Kamoda Shoji, enclosed in a wooden box signed by his wife. Brown glaze is draped quietly across the rough dark clay, the contrast between simplicity and texture a pleasure to hold. It is 4 inches (10 cm) Diameter, 2-1/2 inches (6.5 cm) tall and in excellent condition.
Kamoda Shoji is without a doubt one of the most important and influential ceramic artists of the 20th century. Born in Osaka in 1933, he studied initially at the Kyoto Municipal University of Art under to be Living National Treasure Tomimoto Kenkichi, graduating in 1955. While in school he was awarded at the Shinshokai Exhibition (where he would be often exhibited) and his graduating project was purchased by the University Museum. While working a stint at a commercial kiln, he was accepted into the Contemporary Japanese Ceramics Exhibition. In 1958 he took up residence at the Tsukamoto Ceramics Research Kiln in Mashiko, establishing his own kiln there in 1961. That same year he was accepted into the National Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition (Nihon Dento Kogeiten) where he would exhibit until 1967. In 1964 he boldly stepped onto the stage with pieces in the Modern Japanese Ceramics Exhibition held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto; International Contemporary Ceramics Exhibition held at Tokyo National Museum, and the New Generation of Ceramics Exhibition held at the Goto Museum. He would receive the JCS (Japan Ceramics Society) Award that year, one of the most important prizes for a Japanese potter. In 1966 his work was presented in New York at the First Japan Art Festival, granting him international acclaim to add to his growing domestic reputation and he would receive the JCS Gold Prize that year, cementing his reputation. Thereafter his work was much celebrated in the world of invitational exhibitions and he would receive many awards. In 1969 he moved his kiln, and would again relocate a decade later. He died suddenly at the age of 49 in 1983. His work would be the subject of a multitude of posthumous exhibitions, starting with the Tochigi Prefectural Museum on the third anniversary of his death, and the following year at the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art. His work is held in the National Museums of Modern Art, both in Tokyo and Kyoto, Hiroshima Prefectural Museum of Art, Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Art, Iwate Museum of Art, Victoria & Albert Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and Beijing Palace Museum among many others. A small wall hanging in Togidashi maki-e surrounded by a checkerboard pattern of polished Suzu-ita metal squares by Okada Yuji dating from the mid 1970s. The Togidashi technique requires the artist to create a design in Maki-e, then cover the design entirely in a layer of lacquer, polishing the lacquer through to reveal the image below. A labor intensive and time-consuming practice. In addition to this Yuji has here then applied variously polished panels of metal to the panel creating a stark contrast between the matt metal surfaces and the highly reflective lacquer. Finally he has inlayed Mother of Pearl disks into the surface. The panel is 41 x 31.5 cm (16 x 12-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition.
Okada Yuji was born in Kyoto in 1948 and graduated with honors from the Kyoto Hiyoshi-ga-oka High School Lacquer Course, Receiving top prize for his graduation project. In 1969 he apprenticed under Ito Hiroshi, and the following year was accepted into the Kyoten (Kyoto Prefectural Art Exhibition) as well as the Kyoto Kogei Bijutsu Sakka Kyokai exhibition (Kyoto Kogei Association of artists) where he would be awarded. This begins his solo career. In 1972 he establishes himself as an independent artist, and his work is accepted into the Nitten National Exhibition. In 1973 he is accepted into the Nihon Gendai Kogeiten (Modern Crafts Exhibition). He would subsequently exhibit regularly with the above mentioned Nitten, Nihon Gendai Kogeiten, Kyoten, Kyoto Kogei Bijutsu Sakka Kyokai and later at the Urushi no Bi-ten (Nihon Shikko Kyokai Japanese Lacquer Association) exhibitions as well as solo and group shows, receiving many awards over the years. Later serving as a judge at several of these events. Throughout the 70s and early 80s he would receive numerous awards. In 1985 he took a professorship at the Dohda Art School. 1996 he enters a new phase, having become well known for restoration of lacquer arts, he begins to actively promote restoration work in addition to creating his own artwork. A pair of exquisite fluted porcelain bottles decorated in rich color by Tokuda Yasokichi II enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Flowers in various colors, red, yellow, purple blue and green rise up between patterned undulating bands of green and blue. Each is signed on the base in a yellow seal Kutani Yasokichi. They are 15 cm tall and in perfect condition.
The Tokuda family kiln was established by the first Yasokichi (1873-1956)、born into the house of a textile dying family. As one might expect, he initially studied painting under the tutelage of the famous Araki studio. Returning to his home he became employed decorating Kutani ware under his Brother in Law, Matsumoto Sahei, at the Shoun-Do. However after a sojourn in ceramic production under Asakura Isokichi he broke away and established his own kiln where he chafed at the cheap export ware being produced and began a lifelong search for the roots of Ko-Kutani. A search for which he was honored as a Living National Treasure in 1953. Just three years later the kiln was succeeded by his son, Yasokichi II (1907-1997). Yasokichi II was adopted into the Tokuda family in 1923, and studied initially at the Kyoto National Ceramics Research Facility alongside Hamada Shoji and Kanjiro Kawai. He learned under the tutelage of Living National Treasure Tomimoto Kenkichi before devoting himself fully to the family business. He was awarded at the Brussels World Exposition, Nitten, received the Hokuto-sho prize along with many others, and was displayed in Europe and America. He took many opportunities to continue his life quest by study sabbaticals throughout Asia, North and South America and Europe and was awarded the title Ken Juyo Mukei Bunkazai (Living Prefectural Treasure). He passed the name Yasokichi on to his son in 1988. Works are held in the Imperial Household Collection and Ishikawa Prefectural Museum among many others.

A large modernist Sculpture covered in lacquer, polished metal and mother of pearl by Okada Yuji exhibited at the 1990 Gendai Kogeiten. Suzu-ita, Mother of Pearl and colored lacquers on Wood and Acrylic panel it is 80 x 42 x 18 cm (31-1/2 x 16-1/2 x 7 inches) and is in excellent condition. It comes with a wooden placard titled and signed by the artist.
Okada Yuji was born in Kyoto in 1948 and graduated with honors from the Kyoto Hiyoshi-ga-oka High School Lacquer Course, Receiving top prize for his graduation project. In 1969 he apprenticed under Ito Hiroshi, and the following year was accepted into the Kyoten (Kyoto Prefectural Art Exhibition) as well as the Kyoto Kogei Bijutsu Sakka Kyokai exhibition (Kyoto Kogei Association of artists) where he would be awarded. This begins his solo career. In 1972 he establishes himself as an independent artist, and his work is accepted into the Nitten National Exhibition. In 1973 he is accepted into the Nihon Gendai Kogeiten (Modern Crafts Exhibition). He would subsequently exhibit regularly with the above mentioned Nitten, Nihon Gendai Kogeiten, Kyoten, Kyoto Kogei Bijutsu Sakka Kyokai and later at the Urushi no Bi-ten (Nihon Shikko Kyokai Japanese Lacquer Association) exhibitions as well as solo and group shows, receiving many awards over the years. Later serving as a judge at several of these events. Throughout the 70s and early 80s he would receive numerous awards. In 1985 he took a professorship at the Dohda Art School. 1996 he enters a new phase, having become well known for restoration of lacquer arts, he begins to actively promote restoration work in addition to creating his own artwork. A large deep bowl decorated in abstract underglaze blue imagery by Shibata Ryozo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Sometsuke Hachi and dating circa 1995. It is 35 cm (14 inches) diameter, 25.5 cm (10 inches) deep and in excellent condition.
Shibata Ryozo (b. 1952) completed advanced studies at the Kyoto Municipal University of Arts in 1978 (his work was purchased by the university the previous year for its permanent collection). In 1993 he first exhibited with the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten National Traditional Crafts Association, and in 94 was awarded at the Izushi Porcelain Trienial in Hyogo. After that he concentrated more on the Kansai area, and has been awarded at the Kyoto Bijutsu Kogeiten (97), Kyoto Kogei Bijutsu Sakka Kyokai Ten (98), Seto Sometsuke Exhibition (99) and Osaka Crafts Exhibition on multiple occasions. He has been a guest speaker at the University of Michigan in 2005, and artist in residence in Campbell Australia in 2006. Just this year his work was selected for exhibition in Boston at the Society of Arts and Crafts. In 2014 his work was collected by the Imperial household agency, and he is held in the collections of Kyoto City and Toyooka City Museums among others.

A brilliantly colored bowl studded with shiseki and slashes of black by Banura Shiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 14 cm diameter, 7 cm tall and in excellent condition.
Banura Shiro (1941-2001) was born the fourth son of influential Lacquer Artist Banura Shogo. His sensitivity to textures may stem from that exacting influence. Although his older brother succeeded the family tradition (another branching into paper arts), Shiro, after graduating the Kyoto University of Fine Art, apprenticed in the plastic arts under Kawamura Kitaro (1899-1966) who was a student of Kitaoji Rosanjin. Rosanjin, a restaurateur, artist, and overall renaissance man believed the dish was there to support and bring out the beauty of food served. Shiro took this as his raison d’etre; his lifetime pursuit to create dishes which complimented the seasonality, texture, color and flavor. He had an impressive list of exhibitions, including a private exhibition at the Umeda Kindai Bijutsu-Ten as well as the Niponbashi Mitsukoshi, Takashimaya, and Ikebukuro Tobu, the equivalent of being displayed on New Yorks Fifth Avenue or other cities most Trendy streets, as well as many international exhibitions. Like most Iga-area artists, his output was low, but quality and originality high, making his work very much in demand.

The mouth of this vessel by Kato Yasuhide is placed off center, dissonant to the linear decoration which causes a tension between the two. It comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Senmon Beni Hakusai Henko (Red and White Colored Odd Shaped Vessel with Line Decoration). It is 30 cm (12 inches) tall, 18.5 x 13.5 cm (7-1/4 x 5-1/2 inches) at the base and I excellent condition. Retaining the original Shifuu and Shiori.
Kato Yasuhide was born the eldest son of (to be) Living National Treasure Kato Takuo in 1945. He came to prominence when he was awarded top prize at the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition in 1975. Focusing on sculptural forms, he was awarded and served as a juror for the Nitten National Exhibition where he exhibited consistently. In 1995 he succeeded the family name, becoming Kato Kobei VII. In 2000, upon the death of his father, he withdrew from the Nitten and in 2006 picked up his fathers legacy of research into Persian and silk Road ceramics. He has received high praise, awarded the status of holder of intangible cultural properties in Tajimi City and is former President of the Mino Ceramic Society.

A modernist form in white decorated with a simple zen circle by Yoshikawa Masamichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled simply Utsuwa (vessel) and dating circa 1985. The minimalist approach is a feature of this artists work, and accentuates the aesthetic Mono-no-aware (p an awareness of impermanence)and the circle on front seems to remind us “keep it simple”. It is 11 x 16 x 18 cm (4-1/4 x 6-1/2 x 7 inches) and in excellent condition.
Yoshikawa Masamichi was born in Kanagawa in 1946, and graduated the Japanese Design Academy in 1968. He first garnered attention in Japan being awarded at the 1971 Asahi Togeiten Ceramics Exhibition, and the following year received honorable mention at the 3rd International Biennale of Ceramic Art Vallorious France(Gold prize there in 2002). He has since received numerous prizes including Grand Prize at the Asahi Togeiten 1981, 1983 as well as the Aichi Prefectural Art and Cultur Award in 2005. Work is held in the Korea World Ceramic Center (Soul), American Craft Museum New York, Keramik Museum Germany, Brooklyn Musuem, Tokoname City Museum, V&A London among many others.

A very unusual three sided vase by Miyashita Zenji covered in pale glaze with vertical stripes of color enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Deisai Kaki and titled kizashikaze (Sprouting wind). What makes this vessel quite unique is the use of vertical design. The majority of his work employs horizontal patterns, and it was only in his last years that he began exploring vertical motifs in full, however this piece dates circa 1995 so is a very early example of this ideal. It is 37 cm (14-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Miyashita Zenji (1939-2012) was born into the family of potter Miyashita Zenju, and graduated the Kyoto Municipal University of Art under Kiyomizu Kyubei and Kusube Yaichi. Starting with the most difficult, he worked from Celadon, which relies on shape and extreme control of firing. He began exhibiting in the annual Nitten exhibitions in 1964, eventually winning eighteen prizes. According to the Sackler, which holds 6 works by him, “ His mature work was a modern embodiment of a classic Kyoto mode associated with the Heian period (794–1185). He applied delicate layers of color—reminiscent of multilayered court robes or decorated papers made for inscribing poetry—using not over-glaze enamels or glazes but clay itself, dyed with mineral pigments”. He is held in the aforementioned Freer-Sackler, the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, and the Brooklyn Museum the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and of course The National Museums of Modern Art both in Kyoto and Tokyo among a host of others.

Crimson petals seem to swirl about a vortex of yellow fading to white on the overall black glass surface of this plate by Nakashima Yasushi enclosed in the original signed wooden box and exhibited at the 19th Nihon Dento Kogeiten exhibition (catalog included). It is 14 x 16 inches (35.5 x 41.5 cm) and is in excellent condition. It is titled Anba Unmo Nami-Uchi Sara, Roran no Hana. (I believe he is using the first two characters as “ateji” meaning Amber Mica Waved Dish, Orchid Flowers).
Nakashima Yasushi (1938-2017) was born in Hyogo prefecture and graduated the Kyoto Municipal University of Art in 1962. While still at university he was accepted into the Mainichi Kogyo Design exhibition. He began his career as a designer for Hino Automotive, in charge of their top model the Contessa. However dissatisfied with the opportunities there he moved to Nisshin Denki where he headed up the lighting design department. He left Nisshin in 1974, and began his own career as an independent artist, focused on the plastic arts of glass and ceramic while maintaining his contacts in the design world. With his past in lighting, he was innovative in creating works which combined glass, pottery, metal and electric lights. This did not deter him from consulting in other areas of design, and he was awarded at the National Catalog and Poster Exhibition in 1978. Although he would remain unaffiliated, a difficult place to be in group conscious Japan, he would be accepted into many of the National exhibitions including the National Traditional Crafts Exhibition and awarded at a number of important events, including the National Craft Exhibition, National Modern Ceramic Sculpture Exhibition (and the Shigaraki Ceramics Exhibition in 1999. One monumental work stands in the park in Toki City, Gifu prefecture. He is held in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and Ringling Museum among others.

This piece by Kiyomizu Rokubei VI epitomizing the midcentury aesthetic, this piece by Kiyomizu Rokubei VI covered in soft gold colors and abstract patterns comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kinsai Moriki. It is 16.5 cm (6-1/2 inches) diameter, 23 cm (9 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Kiyomizu Rokubei VI (Shotaro, 1901-1980) graduated from the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts (Kyoto Shiritsu Bijutsu Kogei Gakko) and then Kyoto Municipal Special School of Painting (Kyoto Shiritsu E-ga Senmon Gakko) before taking a position under his father in 1925. That same year, he entered his first competition. Early on he was not limited to pottery, but worked in metal, sculpture and glass as well, absorbing aspects of modernism and the arts and crafts movement into his oeuvre. His career was to be marked by success in exhibitions including numerous awards at the aforementioned government sponsored Bunten/Teiten/Nitten National exhibitions and would later serve as a judge there. He enjoyed international acclaim, showing pieces at exhibitions, having his works join museum collections and winning awards in Belgium, the USSR, France and Italy. He did much to cultivate the arts and young artists in the post war years, taking full advantage of his position as a star to promote both traditional and avant-garde approaches. He would be appointed a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1962 and awarded the Order of Cultural Merit in 1976. So dedicated was he, in fact, he died in 1980 after collapsing at an exhibition celebrating the Kiyomizu family's history. A multitude of works by him are held in the The National Museums of Modern Art, both in Tokyo and Kyoto.

Shimizu Uichi (1926-2004) was born in Kyoto the son of a ceramic dealer. Discarding the family business he apprenticed in plastic arts under Ishiguro Munemaro. His work retains some principal elements of his teachers style while incorporating an understated elegance and avant-garde spirit of challenge uncommon for his time. He was first exhibited at the Nitten in 1951, receiving numerous awards there since. He also took the gold medal at the Prague International Exhibition, and was at the Brussels World Exposition. He is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum, Kyoto Museum of Modern art, Clark Center and the Freer Gallery among others.

An exquisite vessel by Bizen legend Yamamoto Toshu enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Bizen Meipin. The form is perfection, covered with a dusting of ash revealing a flame colored eye on one side, everything about the proportions timeless. This is a piece I could wax on for hours about, but will leave that up to the viewer. It is 8 inches (20.5 cm) tall and in perfect condition.
Yamamoto Toshu (1906-1994) began working in a pottery at the age of 15. 12 years later (1933) he went independent, but interestingly decided to train again later not under a Bizen master, but Kusube Yaichi, perhaps stimulating his unusual eye for Bizen. After much acclaim, it was in 1959 that he made his worldwide appearance, with a gold prize at the Brussels World Exposition, and was named an important cultural property of Okayama that same year. He was most in love with the wheel, and his forms are crisp and sharp. He was named a living national Treasure in 1987. Works by the artist are held in the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo and National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto as well as the Victoria Albert Museum among many others.

A stunning and unusual Chawan tea bowl in burnt orange glaze with abstract splashes of black by Kawamoto GOro enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Perfectly formed, with a wide base and slightly concave sides leading to a pouty rim, all draped in this haunting ochre with poured black graffiti. A masterpiece by this important artist. It is 11.5 cm (4-1/2 inches) diameter, 8 cm (3-1/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Kawamoto Goro (1919-1986) was born in Seto to a family of potters. He studied in Kyoto at the same institution as Kawai Kanjiro and Hamada Shoji. Returning to work at the family kiln, he was later adopted by Kawamoto Rekitei, a famous decorator of pottery. In 1953 he gained first recognition, accepted into the Nitten National Exhibition and garnering top prize at the Asahi Modern Ceramics Exhibition. In 1958 he would be awarded in Brussels, and in 1959 in California and at home was granted the 1959 JCS award winner. Much lauded the list is much too long for this article. work by him is held in the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art as well as the The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo among many others.

the silhouette of birds flit through the branches of the forest which rises up in white trunks on the verdant green of this flower receptacle by Yamaguchi Yoshihiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kasai Ju-in Mon Hanaike. The pebble textured surface is very unusual for Kutani ware, and bridges the glitzy world of porcelain and the more matte world of ceramics. The soft palette allows the vase to work in any decor, the abstract lines seeming to grow up randomly, without intent, and yet the overall design is quite striking. This is 31 cm (12 inches) diameter, 20 cm (8 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Yamaguchi Yoshihiro (b. 1951) studied under Asakura Isokichi and graduated from the Kutani Crafts School in 1971. He has exhibited with the Nitten, The Issuikai Ten, The Nihon Gendai Kogeiten National Modern Crafts Exhibition (awarded), The Nihon Dento Kogeiten National Traditional Crafts Exhibition as well as the National Modern Arts Exhibition (awarded) and was designated a Dento Kogeishi (Traditional Craftsman) in 1993.

Enigmatic lines score the martian landscape of this large slab platter by innovative Japanese artist Teramoto Mamoru enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The slab measures 53.5 x 16.5 x 5 cm (21 x 6-1/2 x 2 inches) and is in perfect condition. The box itself is a testament toteh value placed on it by the artist, double the thickness of a usual box and of a fine grade of kiri. The moonscape style is haunting, and Mamoru is a must for any modern Japanese ceramic collection.
Mamoru (1949-present) born in Kanagawa prefecture, initially worked at the Kasama Kobayashi Research Facility after graduating the Tokyo Craft Design Institute. Later he apprenticed under the instruction of both Matsumoto Saichi of Kutani, and Miura Isamu. He established his own kiln in 1976 in Kasama. His works have been displayed and prized at the Nihon Dento Kogeiten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibtion), Nihon Togei Ten (National Ceramics Exhibition) as well as the Shinsaku Ten (New Crafts Exhibition). Crackled green glass pools in the center of this humble tea bowl by Ezaki Issei enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled simply Chawan. The works of Issei personify the humble virtues of the tea ceremony. They are imbued with a sense of Musakui (Lack of intention), a bowl that has come to be, rather than a bowl that was created. It is 15.5 cm (6 inches) diameter, 5.5 cm (2-1/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Ezaki Issei (also Esaki, 1918-1992) was born in Tokoname, but came to the road of the potter later in life, establishing himself as an artist in 1956. It was he who set the pattern for the research and revival of medieval techniques. His work was exhibited and awarded at the National Art Exhibition (Nitten), National Traditional Crafts Exhibition (Nihon Dento Kogeiten), Asahi Crafts Fair (Asahi Kogeiten) and the Modern Japanese Ceramics Exhibition (Gendai Nihon Togeiten) among others. He taught both Osako Mikio and Takeuchi Kimiaki, making him likely the most influential 20th century Tokoname artist. After ten years battling sickness and on the slate to be named a living national treasure, he succumbed to illness at the age of 74. Several works by him is held in both the National Museums of Modern Art in Tokyo and Kyoto.

A deep Choho-zara rectangular dish decorated with morning glories in dark rust and red over yellow with a black rim, a striking combination by Kyoto female artist Takagi Hoko enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Created from a heavy slab, the sides were raised and carved with wave patterns covered in white with a raw base chiseled out in long horizontal strokes. On the base is a worn piece of paper which gives the artists address and names the work, leading one to believe this was exhibited. The dish is roughly 15 x 10 inches (37.5 x 26 cm) and is in excellent condition.

Flame shapes fan up on the sides of this trumpeting bottle by Funaki Kenji enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 6-1/2 x 7-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches (16.5 x 19 x 24 cm) and is in fine condition. Funaki Kenji (b. 1927) was born the son of potter Funaki Michitada (1900-1963) in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. Michitada had been a follower of the Mingei movement closely associated with its founders Kanjiro, Shoji and Leach. Kenji trained under his father in both the traditional styles of Fujina and the slipware styles introduced by Leach and associates and also worked in the Mingei style under Hamada Shoji. Work by him is held in the Mingei-kan Japan Folk-craft Museum of Tokyo, Freer-Sackler of the Smithsonian, the Brooklyn Museum and the V&A in London among many others. Another Radical piece by Hayashi Shotaro, this dramatic tsubo is thinly veiled in a crystalline feldspathic glaze, the violent eruptions peeling away from the surface catching and pooling the glaze to spectacular effect. It comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The piece is 12-1/2 inches 831.5 cm) tall, 10-1/2 inches (27 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. Shotaro (b. 1947) is one of the biggest names in contemporary Mino ceramics. He first began with a 7 year apprenticeship under his older brother Kotaro, ending when he established his own kiln in 1974. Since then his list of exhibitions and awards has been amazing, including the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (National Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition), Governors Prize and five times winner of Best of Show at the Asahi Togei Ten (Asahi Ceramics Exhibition), and Best of Show at Gifu Prefectural Exhibition.

A pair of exquisite fluted porcelain bottles decorated in rich color by Living National Treasure Tokuda Yasokichi I enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Flowers in various color, red, yellow, purple and blue rise up between patterned undulating bands of green, the definition clear and precise. Each is signed on the base in a yellow seal Kutani Yasokichi. They are 15 cm tall and in perfect condition.
Tokuda Yasokichi I (1873-1956) was born into a family of textile dyers in Ishikawa prefecture, but entered the ceramics world under the tutelage of his Brother Matsumoto Sahei, specializing in the Yoshidaya decorative technique of Kutani ware in 1890. In 1922 he received Imperial patronage. He was named one of the first living National Treasures in 1953 (and his grandson, Yasokichi III would also be named such).

A polished mixed-media sculpture by Sugano Chii enclosed in a wooden box titled Kaetekita Akerakan (Akerakan Returned) featured in the book Sugano Chii (published 1997). It is 21 x 17 x 21 cm (8-1/4 x 7 x 8-1/4 inches) and is in excellent condition.
Sugano Chii was born in Saga Prefecture in 1909, on the Southern Island of Kyushu, and graduated the prefectural Saga Prefectural Ogi Girls School in 1927 before being accepted in the Tokyo Women’s Art School (Mod. Womens Art University) Western Painting Department in 1931. The following year she began working for The Shochiku Movie Studios where she would remain throughout the war years. In 1944 she took a position as art director at the Sansui Schools (mod. Toho Gakuen). In 1949 her work was accepted into the Sculpture Division of the Nika-ten and would first be awarded there in 1955. In 1957 she would be one of 13 people chosen for the Bijutsu Hihyo Art Publication. That same year she held an exhibition in cohorts with photographer Takuya Tsukahara at the swank Ginza: Ichibankan Gallery. In 1969 she becomes a permanent member o the Nikakai. In 1986 "Acceptance III" exhibited at the Spring Nikakai Exhibition is permanently displayed at the National Productivity Bureau NPB Building in Singapore. In 1991 she began production of the “Love and Melancholy” series in the wake of the Gulf War. In 1994 she was awarded for the work “Memories of the Earth” exhibited at the Spring Nikakai.
