A fabulous Seihakuji Koro by Fukami Sueharu enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled: Fly (Tobu). Two wings burst from the shoulders; the lid pierced with matching holes to allow the smoke to escape. It has the artists signature incised into the base. The work is 17.5 cm (7 inches) tall and in perfect condition.
Fukami Sueharu is synonymous with seihakuji celadon. He has been displayed numerous times at the prestigious Nitten, Nihon Togei Ten (National Japanese Ceramic Exhibition) and Nihon Gendai Kogei Ten (National Japanese Modern Crafts Exhibition) among others. He is held in the Yale University Museum among others. For more information on this artist a quick web-search, or a look at the article highlighting his life in the March 2005 edition of Orientations Magazine will be enlightening. Bright blue brushstrokes dance over the pale glazed surface of this sake server by Shigemori Yoko enclosed in a signed wooden box titled Shuchu. It has been dipped several times in different colored glazes, with what appears to be a wash of ink wavering like a ghost around the rim and spout. This is a bridge between two of her styles, and unusual work which will make a nice conversation starter as you share a drink. It is 10 x 13 x 10 cm (4 x 5 x 4 inches) and in excellent condition, enclosed in a wooden box signed by her brother. It goes very well with the sake cup pictured.
Shigemori Yoko (1953-2021) was born in Kagoshima. Yoko came to Kyoto where she initially studied painting at the Kyoto Tankidai Art College, then moved to ceramics at the Kyoto Municipal Art University where she studied traditional pottery techniques under Kondo Yutaka before entering advanced courses under Yagi Kazuo, graduating in 1979. Her first solo exhibitions were held while still a student, at Gallery Iteza in Kyoto. She eschewed the world of competitive exhibitions in favor of the intimacy of private galleries, and her list of solo exhibitions is expansive. She received the Yagi Kazuo prize in 1986 and 1988 at the Nihon Gendai Togeiten. She was one of five artists featured in Toh, volume 76, The first issue dedicated to Kyoto Potters. Toh was at the time the most in depth survey of important contemporary potters published in 1993. Her work is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

A broken open Tsubo By Kim Hono enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Chikyu no Tameiki (The Earth Sighs). It is for the most part, raw earthen colors, with a thick pool of tinted aquamarine glass inside. It is 40 x 34 x 41.5 (16 x 13-1/2 x 16-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition. Upon the box is drawn an image of the Tsubo with a single dried lotus seed pod rising from within.
Kim Hono was born in Seto City Aichi Prefecture in 1958, and graduated the Prefectural Ceramics School in 1977, then taking up apprenticeship at a local kiln before establishing himself as an independent artist in 1982. He held his first solo exhibition in Nagoya in 1985. He has been exhibited at the Nihon Togeiten National Ceramics Exhibition Dento Kogeiten National Traditional Crafts Exhibition, Asahi Togeiten Exhibition, Chunichi Kokusai Togeiten, and his works being shown in some of Japans top galleries including Kuroda Toen in Tokyo’s Ginza ward. Not to be defined, even by himself, famously when asked by Hohnoho Magazine to define his work he cryptically replied only: Kaze wo Kanjiru Koto (Feeling the wind).

A spectacular faceted deep chawan in dual-color by Nishihata Daibi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Tamba Kakewake Chawan. It is 9.5 cm (just under 4 inchers) tall, 11-12 cm (4-1/2 to 5 inches) diameter and in excellent condition.
Nishihata Daibi (also sometimes written NIshibata) was born in Tachikui Village, Hyogu in 1976. After graduating the Law Department of Kyoto University, one of the countries most formidable schools, in 1999, the promising young lawyer moved to complete a ceramics course at the prefectural vocational school, and then a stint at the Municipal Industrial Research Institute (Like many of the greats before him, Kawai Kanjiro, Hamada Shoji etc). His first solo exhibition was held at Kuroda Toen in Ginza, quite a feat for a young artist. In 2005 he first exhibited with the Nihon Dento Kogeiten National Traditional Crafts Exhibition. The following year, in addition to that venue, he was exhibited at the Chanoyu Zokei Ten a (Modern Forms in Tea). While his works were popular in private Department store exhibits, he continued with these two jurried fairs, but tragically died of heart failure at the very young age of 34 in 2010. The number of works by this artist are very few and difficult to find. He is held in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts among others.

A growth of calcified clay in sand-textured white by Yamaguchi Mio dating from 2023, a bridge between her earth-tones and new porcelain works. It is a great size at 22 x 15 x 20 cm (roughly 9 x 6 x 8 inches) and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist. It comes with a signed wooden box, which will be ordered upon sale.
Yamaguchi Mio was born in Aichi prefecture in 1992, and graduated advanced studies at the Aichi University of Education in 2017. While still at university, her works were selected for show at the JoryuTogei Ten Female Ceramic Artist Association Exhibition (2014). In 2016 she was awarded at the 3rd Kogei in Kanazawa Competition, Grand Prize at the Ceramic Art in the Present Tense Exhibition at the Hagi Uragami Museum as well received the governors prize at the 5oth Female Ceramic Artist Association Exhibition. In 2017 she was selected for the 11International Ceramics Competition in Mino. She took a job as a teacher, but could not fight the need to create, so enrolled in the Tajimi City Ceramics research facility, graduating in2020. Her work is currently on view in the Chicago Institute of Arts, and was featured on the cover of the catalog for that exhibition, Radical Clay.
According to Mio: I feel that my fascination towards the natural world’s use of repetition, in bee hives and on the surface of corals, appears in my work as I consume and absorb the world around me. I like to believe that these works are natural forms made by my own hands. When I mold clay, I have a sensation that my body and consciousness blends and binds with the material and the natural world. The process of building upon each coil and applying each fold one by one with my hands is a form of meditation. Through this repetitive process I want to be able to convey my thoughts at the time in the texture, such as my struggle of swaying between the desires to live freely and falling under the pressure from societal expectations. It calms me down to observe the fingerprints left in the surface and see the traces of my existence in the clay. These works are products of what I have absorbed around me.

Invisible from the top, glimmering stones catch the light in the raw cracked clay on the outside of this dark earthen bowl by Ogawa Machiko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Yami to Sei (Darkness and Stars) Chawan. A beautiful bowl showing the artists fascination with the combination of smooth crystalline surfaces and raw matte clay. The interior is glazed, while the outside is raw clay. It is roughly 15.3 cm (6 inches) diameter, 8 cm (3-1/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Ogawa Machiko was born in Sapporo on the Northern Island of Hokkaido in 1946. She studied under future Living National Treasures Fujimoto Yoshimichi, Tamura Koichi and Kato Hajime at the Tokyo University of Arts, graduating in 1969, then went on to further studies in France and Africa, returning to Japan in 1975. She began garnering attention in the mid eighties, and has since become one of the leading female figures in Japanese pottery. She was awarded the JCS prize in 2001, one of Japans most prestigious awards. Work by her is held in the Brooklyn Art Museum, LACMA, New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smith College, MIA, MOMAT and a host of others. A sumptuous wood grain bowl by Tanaka Eiko covered outside in red and black lacquer, the lacquer thin enough to allow highlights of the tiger-striped grain to show through. Her tree of choice is the Horse Chestnut (Jap. Tocchi), which has unparalleled grain patterns. A perfectly fitted black lacquered lid with elegant finial covers the bowl. It is 10 cm (4 inches) diameter, signed on the base and comes in her red paper box with shiori card.
Tanaka Eiko was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1983, and graduated the Aichi Prefectural University of Education lacquer department in 2005. The following year her work was first presented at the Takaoka Craft Competition, the following year entered into the salon of Nakashima Torao, and had her work presented at the Ishikawa Dento Kogeiten Traditional Crafts Exhibition. She graduated the Ishikawa Prefectural Wood turning technology training center in 2010, establishing her own studio in 2012. Since her work has been exhibited around Japan, New York, Indonesia, Taiwan, Germany, Holland, Singapore and Thailand. She says: “The Japanese horse chestnut is a tree with great individuality. To bring out the personality of each tree I must confront it sincerely and draw out its strength by using red and black, the colors I love”. An organic form of striated growth by Yamaguchi Mio enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is created by forming hundreds of small petals and slowly building up the form, in the same way that nature would grow barnacles on a rock, one at a time, expanding slowly, over eons. Many of her works are quite large, this is manageable in size at 21 x 17 x 27 cm tall (8 x 7 x 10-3/4 inches) and is in excellent condition, from the artist this year.

This is a seminal work by the most legendary figure in Shino today, Hayashi Shotaro, in his signature Manyosai glaze with incredible color patterns enclosed in the original singed wooden box complete with wrapping cloth and name card (Shiori and Shifuku). It is huge at 53.5 x 10 x 24.5 cm (21 x 4 x 9-3/4 inches) and in perfect condition. Very Heavy!

Hayashi Shotaro (b. 1947) is one of the biggest names in contemporary Mino ceramics. Although initially entering regular employment upon graduating high school, in 1967 he returned to Toki city to help his brother Kotaro. Very quickly within him was born the urge to create. He won the highest award at the Gifu Prefectural Art Exhibition in 1968, and from there his talent blossomed. He established his own kiln in 1974. Since then his list of exhibitions and awards has been amazing, including the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (National Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition), Governors Prize and five times winner of Best of Show at the Asahi Togei Ten (Asahi Ceramics Exhibition), and Best of Show at Gifu Prefectural Exhibition. At the Mino Ceramics Exhibition, in addition to the highest award, the Mino Ceramics Award, he has received all three major awards, including the Shoroku Award and the Kobei Award.

A prototypical Momoyama style Iga vase by Atarashi Kanji enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Iga Mimitsuki Hanaire. It is 24 cm tall (just under 10 inches) and in excellent condition.
Atarashi Kanji was born in Osaka in 1944, and graduated the Osaka College of Craft design. After 3 years in Kobe, and 4 in Kishiwada (Wakayama) he came to settle in Iga, where he was one of the driving forces behind the resurrection and preservation of the Iga tradition. Although displayed at the National Craft Fair, he prefers the intimacy of the private exhibition, of which he holds several every year. And if ones visit to japan is not timed right for an exhibition, he can otherwise be found at his kiln working along with his son and daughter.

Wow! This is quite a tsubo by revivalist Takahashi Shunsai enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Kama Hana Tsubo. A wack of ash blasts the shoulder over raw shiseki studded terracotta clay scorched the color of bricks. Fired on its side, opposite is charred and covered in molten ash where it had been buried in the embers. This is truly a classic Shigaraki work down to the belt of cross hatches at the shoulder and two stage mouth. It is 26 cm (10 inches) tall, roughly the same diameter and in excellent condition.
Born in 1927, the second son of renowned potter Takahashi Rakusai III in Shigaraki, Takahashi Shunsai left home to study under Taniguchi Ryosai in Kyoto before returning to Shigaraki to pursue his studies of Shigaraki styles specifically under his father and spent the better part of two decades working from that studio. He established his own kiln in 1968. He has been displayed at the Nitten, Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibition), Nihon Togei ten (National Ceramics Exhibition), Asahi Ceramics Exhibition, as well as a long list of private exhibitions at Japan’s top galleries. He has been often prized as a master of Shigaraki, and has been designated a Shiga Prefectural Intangible Cultural Property (Living Treasure) in 1995. This is possibly more important than the Living National Treasure designation, imbued as that selection is with rank and politic. The Prefectural version is truly representative of one’s merits as an artist and achievement.

A striking ceramic box scrawled with abstract lines covered in silver on top with silver droplets of mist covering the blue sides by Kondo Takahiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Jigen Jikiro. It is 14.5 x 8.5 x 7 cm (5-3/4 x 3-1/4 x 3 inches) and is in perfect condition.
Kondo Takahiro (b. 1958) was born the grandson of Living National Treasure Kondo Yuzo. However, he graduated Hosei University not with a degree in sculpture or crafts, but in Literature. From there he studied at the Kyoto Prefectural Technical Institute of Ceramics, followed by a year at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Research. 15 years later he would spend a year in Edinburgh studying glass making, and with this combination of skills, was born the silver mist series for which he is so highly acclaimed. Work by him is held in Museums throughout the world, including the National Museum of Scotland, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Museum of Arts & Design, New York, Spencer Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Art Gallery NSW, Sydney, Hamilton Art Gallery, Australia, Miho Museum. National Gallery of Victoria, Paramita Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art, Shigaraki, and The São Paulo Museum of Art, Brazil among others. A very unusual sculpted work in crispy Manyosai Shino glaze by Hayashi Shotaro enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 8 x 10 x 10 inches (25 x 20 x 26 cm) and in excellent condition.
Shotaro is one of Japans true genius potters, moving far beyond tradition, glaze research and firing technique, to a place of inception. He first began with a 7 year apprenticeship under his older brother Kotaro, ending when he established his own kiln in 1974. Since then his list of exhibitions and awards has been amazing, including the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (National Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition), Governors Prize and five times winner of Best of Show at the Asahi Togei Ten (Asahi Ceramics Exhibition), and Best of Show at Gifu Prefectural Exhibition among many others.

Do not let size fool you, this dainty work by Matsushima Iwao is flabbergasting, and will keep you wondering for days how he created it. It is core-formed glass, a process few have mastered, where variously colored rods, some infused with gold or other precious metals are heated and slowly built up over heat like forming a clay pot by coil and pinching (terribly oversimplified). According to the New Bedford Museum of Glass, “Long before the invention of the glass blow-pipe, which took place in the Roman Empire about 50 B.C., most hollow glass vessels were formed around a removable core”. This piece is roughly 6.5 cm (2-12 inches) diameter and comes complete with the original glass lid. Although traditional core-formed glass is at the basis of Matsushima’s work, he added significantly to the ancient technique; not merely imitating the ancient art, but refining and expanding it. Given the small size and fragility of his vessels, Matsushima does not sign them.
Matsushima Iwao was born in Okayama in 1946, and began delving into Core Glass forming in 1975. His work traveled the globe in 1981 as part of a show titled The Beauty of Modern Glass in 1981, the works visiting Australia, Canda and the US as well as being displayed at the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto (MOMAK). The following year he established his own studio and devoted himself fully to working professionally as a glass artist.
Works by the artist are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, the British Museum, and the Corning Glass Museum. In Japan three works by him are held in the National Crafts Museum, part of the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo (MOMAT). In addition, works are held in the Miho Museum, The Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, and Toyama City Glass Museum among many others. He is now a lecturer at the Toyama City Institute of Glass Art and a faculty member at Okayama University, both in Japan.

Coral like texture seems to have settled on the shoulders of this sculpted Bizen vessel by artist Wakimoto Hiroyuki enclosed in the Original signed wooden box. The form is very natural, all curves and no glaze (it would make a great motto). Wakimoto is strongly influenced by the natural world and the shapes of ancient civilizations. From his native Japan to ancient China and Native American cultures, he assimilates and produces, all bending to his tools and wedges. This piece is roughly 8 inches (20 cm) across, 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) tall and, of course, in perfect condition. Another outsider in the Bizen world, Hiroyuki followed in the footsteps of friend Kakurezaki Ryuichi, both originally of Nagasaki. He graduated the Osaka University of Art Textile design in 1975, but gave up that line, Settling in Bizen for a long apprenticeship under Yamashita Joji in 1981. He established his own kiln in 1990, and was immediately prized at the Issui Kai Exhibition that year. The following year he was widely accepted, and ahs since displayed at the Chanoyu Zokei Ten (Sculptural Tea Forms) at the Tanabe Museum, The Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (Japanese Traditional Crafts Exhibirtion), Nihon Togei Ten (Japanese National Ceramics Exhibition), Asahi Togei Ten, among many others, both domestic and abroad.

It is difficult to put a descriptive on the colors of these bowls crafted on the potters wheel by Masatomo Toi. This one is the color of plums, or aubergine, or somewhere in between. The photographs do not capture the translucence or light of the purple glaze. It has a very thin lip, which may fool the viewer into thinking it is light, however it has a respectable weight, as the bowl is thicker at the bottom to both contain the heat and protect the hands of the holder from the boiling tea contained within. A single thumbprint in platinum marks the series. The unglazed base is also coated in platinum. The bowl itself has been fired three times, the initial bisk firing, the glaze firing, and the metal firing. It is roughly 13 cm (5 inches) diameter and in new condition, directly from the artist this spring and come complete with signed wooden box..
Masatomo Toi was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1992, and graduated the Design course at the Tajimi Ceramics Research Facility in 2019. Since he has been developing his series of “Thorny” vessels and objects. At the same time he has been studying the way of tea, and these bowls are his first unadorned venture into the tea world (although we will also offer a few striking horned chawan as well). His works have been featured in a number of group and juried exhibitions. He will soon depart Japan for a year of study and experimentation abroad, and we expect great things in his future.

This bowl is just an ideal look at the many aspects for which Shigaraki is known. The entire is incredibly natural looking, as if erosion and growth have spent eons together creating the paternation. This of course, truly happens over about 5 days, the effects born from the natural combination of fire, ash, flow and placement within the kiln. Furutani Taketoshi was born the son of master craftsman Furutani Hirofumi in 1974, graduating the Shigaraki Industrial High School Ceramics department in 1992 before entering the Shiga prefectural Ceramics Research Facility where he learned first Small Rokuro wheel technique, graduating the following year. In 1993 he would find himself under the tutelage of Suzuki Iwau before re-entering for a second course at the Research Facility, graduating in 1995. From then he returned to the family kiln where he learned in the time-honored tradition from both his grandfather Churoku I and father Hirofumi (Churokuk II). In 2013 he was named a Dento Kogeishi Traditional Craftsman. Since he has exhibited consistently at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. Subverting the self, he makes simple, organic pots which have a timeless quality. As well he dares new forms and challenges the clay with innovative techniques, coercing from the pliable earth challenging incarnations very much rooted in the now, yet still paying homage to the traditions passed down through the ages.

One of three vibrant sake cups by Nakashima Katsuko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hai. Always cheerful, I love sharing a joyous cup with Katsuko. It is 6.5 cm (2-1/2 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.
Nakashima Katsuko graduated the Osaka School of Art and Design and first garnered attention with a silver prize at the Nihon Tojiki Ceramics Design competition in 1984. Her works have been selected for display and awarded at the Asahi Gendai Kogeiten Contemporary Craft Exhibition (awarded 1997), Mino International Ceramics Festival (Bronze award 1998) , Gyeonggi-do International Ceramics Exhibition, Korea, Gold prize in 2003 and Grand Prize at the Kobe International Ceramics Competition among a host of others.
