A dimpled set of small white glazed bowls enclosed in the original signed wooden box by Sodeisha artist Yamada Hikaru enclosed in the original signed wooden box. They are 9 x 10 x 6.5 cm (3-1/2 x 4 x 2-1/2 inches) and are all in excellent condition. Perfect for small deserts or su-mono if serving Japanese style.
Yamada Hikaru (1924-2001), was born into the family of layman potter and priest Yamada Tetsu, and raised in Gifu after the family home was destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake. At the age of 20 he entered the Kyoto ceramics research facility, 15 years junior to those who had inspired the great Mingei movement at that same institution. Somehow escaping overseas service in the war, he met Yagi Kazuo in 1945, and the two formed an instant bond, founding a group for young potters the following year. Compounded by the austerity and poverty they faced as young artists in the immediate postwar, the group grew and along with Kumakura Junkichi, Suzuki Osamu and Yagi Kazuo formed the most influential post war ceramics organization, Sodeisha, as it was, in 1948. They eschewed public competition and espoused the ideas of art for arts sake, negating the ideas of the mingei movement, which stressed function over form. Together, members of the group worked tirelessly to promote modern Japanese pottery for the next several decades both within and outside of Japan. Held in innumerable public and private collections including the National Museum of Modern Art, both Tokyo and Kyoto, Museum of New South Wales and the Victoria Albert.

Size, shape, color, texture: these are perfect for showing off your signature dish with style. They are roughly 18 x 20 cm (7 x 8 inches), nearly 2 cm thick and in excellent condition, directly from the artist this autumn.
Murakoshi Takuma is one of those enigmas who simply lives to work with clay. He does not seek to make a living through pottery, but through his primal approach has earned a following which keeps his work in high demand. And if there is anything he is known for, it is without a doubt his legendary status among restaurants and Izakaya as the man to make your food presentation perfect. He was born in Aichi prefecture in 1954 and began his stroll down the pottery path in 1980 under the tutelage of Kyoto potter Umehara Takehira. Favoring very rough Shigaraki glaze, he established his own kiln in 1997 in the Kiyomizu pottery district of Kyoto, then moved to Nagaoka in 2002. Although eschewing the world of competitive exhibitions, he has been picked up by many of Japan’s preeminent galleries, including private exhibitions at the prestigious Kuroda Toen of Tokyo’s Ginza District.

Every effect you could ever want is visible on this masterpiece chawan by Anagama artist Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Chawan. It is 12 cm (just less than 5 inches) diameter and in excellent condition. What is most surprising about the tea bowls of Taketoshi is his ability to take this very rough Shigaraki clay, and coil form the walls of the bowl so thin, making the bowls deceptively light to hold. And yet these sit in the very precious Hai-kaburi space at the front of the kiln, so he is only able to get a few bowls like this from a firing. This year so far he ahs only fired twice, so likely has made less than 10 hai-kaburi chawan like this in the entire of 2022.
Furutani Taketoshi was born the son of master craftsman Furutani Hirofumi in 1974, graduating the Shigaraki Industrial High School Ceramics department in 1992 before entering the Shiga prefectural Ceramics Research Facility studying wheel technique, graduating the following year. He then did a year apprenticeship at a pottery before re-entering for a second course at the Research Facility, graduating in 1995. From that year he returned to the family kiln, receiving the family tradition from both his grandfather Furutani Churoku and father Furutani Hirofumi. Subverting the self, he makes simple, organic pots which have a timeless quality, very much rooted in the now, but paying homage to the traditions past down through the ages. He was named a Designated Traditional Craftsman (Dento Kogeishi) in 2013. He has exhibited with the Nihon Dento Kogeiten among others, and still works closely with his father at the family kiln.

Stratified layers fold over in a timeless rhythm on this covered box by Izumita Yukiya enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Sekisoh Futamono. The laminated layers and uneven kiln texture folded over and over again, create a unique cadence on the baked earth which offers the viewer both urbanity and a view of the wilderness that resembles the strata of the earth. If one has ever walked the shoreline of Iwate where this artist lives, the influence is clear. The receptacle is 28 x 19 x 4 cm (11 x 7-1/2 x 1-3/4 inches) and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist. Izumita Yukiya was born in 1966 in Rikuzentakat, Iwate Prefecture, and studied potting technique at the Kokujiyaki Kilns under Shimotakke Gakuho. He opened his own kiln in 1995 in Noda Village. In 1998 he began firing in an Anagama hole kiln. He has an impressive list of exhibitions and awards including the grand prize twice at the Asahi Togeiten Ceramic Exhibition in 2000 and 2002. He has also exhibited at the Nihon Togeiten National Ceramics Exhibition, International Ceramics Festival in Mino, Asahi Modern Craft Exhibition as well as being awarded at the 20th Japan Ceramic Art Biennial Exhibition in 2009. A spectacular faceted work by Ueda Mitsuharu enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Mentori Kabin. It is 9 x 11 x 11 inches (28 x 24 x 28 cm) and is in excellent condition.
Born in Fukuoka in 1957, and studied initially pottery in Tamba under Ogami Tsuyoshi before entering the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Research Facility, which he finished in 1983 followed by a year studying glazes in the Shiga Prefectural Kiln. That same year he entered the Koga Tea Culture Research place (Koga Sado Bunka Kenkyusho) and came under the influence of Koga Kenzo. In 1987 he came to study under Ueda Naokata, and has since taken over that kiln, becoming the 6th Naokata.

An open basin in the shape of a tea bowl by female artist Okuda Tomoko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Raku Kohen Hanaire (Kiln altered Raku Vase). It has the feeling mas as if it has grown this way, out of some geologic process, than sculpted out of clay. Large and tactile it is 8 inches (20 cm) diameter, 5 inches (13 cm) tall and in excellent condition.
Okuda Tomoko studied under the great female avant-garde legend Tsuboi Asuka, and lived and worked in Tokoname for 20 years, before returning to her home of Nara in 2014. With a great number of private exhibitions, her works have been exhibited at the Asahi Togeiten Ceramic Exhibition, as well as in America, France and England. She has been awarded the Joryu Togeiten (Female Artist Ceramic Exhibition). Her philosophy is “pottery should be free and supple like a cat, imbued with warmth and grace, leave your heart to the soil and have fun”.

A serving dish in the rare Utsutsukawa-yaki tradition by Yokoishi Gagyu (b. 1975) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The ovoid is covered in November shades over which has been applied in white slip a field of dried grasses blowing in the wind. It is 278 cm (10-1/2 inches) diameter and in perfect condition.
Gagyu’s first exhibited piece at the age of 30 in 1955 took the governors prize at the Nagasaki Kenten Prefectural Art Exhibition. That was the beginning of a prestigious career prolific with awards culminating in being named an important cultural property for Nagasaki prefecture in 1975 (the state version of a living national treasure) he has also displayed with the Nihon Dento Kogeiten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibition) among many others, and has an impressive number of private exhibitions. He is credited with reviving the lost art of Utsutsukawa-yaki, and is a very important figure in modern Arita.

Thick white feldspathic glaze tinged with flickers of color covers this sake flask by Kato Kozo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shino Tokkuri. It is 13.3 cm (just over 5 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Kato Kozo was born in 1935, and studied under the Mino Legend and Designated Living National Treasure Arakawa Toyozo. He has been widely exhibited both domestically and abroad and like his mentor Kozo was named a Living National Treasure in 2010, a tribute to a life spent reviving and defending the Mino traditions. Work by him is held in the National Museums of Modern Art, both Tokyo and Kyoto as well as the Victoria & Albert Museum among others

Brisk inky swirls have been struck into the milky white sides of this large bowl titled San-nin-mawashi Chawan (Teabowl for 3) by Shigemori Yoko enclosed in a signed wooden box. As would be expected of this artist, the work is spontaneous and energetic with no sense of caution or hesitation. The base is thick and solid, the entirety exuding a sense of confidence and strength. It is 15 cm (6 inches) diameter, 11.5 cm (4-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition, the box annotated by her nephew. In some traditions tea was made in a large bowl and passed from hand to hand, each person taking a sip. A bit like passing the mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving…

Yoko came to Kyoto where she initially studied painting at the Kyoto Tankidai Art College, then moved to ceramics at the Kyoto Municipal Art University where she studied traditional pottery techniques under Kondo Yutaka before entering advanced courses under Yagi Kazuo, graduating in 1979. Her first solo exhibitions were held while still a student, at Gallery Iteza in Kyoto. She eschewed the world of competitive exhibitions in favor of the intimacy of private galleries, and her list of solo exhibitions is expansive. She received the Yagi Kazuo prize in 1986 and 1988 at the Nihon Gendai Togeiten. She was one of five artists featured in Toh, volume 76, The first issue dedicated to Kyoto Potters. Toh was at the time the most in depth survey of important contemporary potters published in 1993. Her work is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Celadon is all about form, and here Yagi Akira has nailed it with this expertly executed elegant shape composed of 2 interlocking pieces covered in green celadon glaze and enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kakushaku (literally horn scoop). It is 4-3/4 inches (14.5 cm) tall and in excellent condition.
This name is a must have in any collection of modern Japanese Pottery. Akira was born in Kyoto in 1955, son of avant garde Yagi Kazuo (1918-1979) one of the founding members of Sodeisha. Akira was voted one of the 20 most important living artists by Honoho, Japans premier printed ceramic forum. Works by the artist are held in the British Museum, Victoria Albert Museum, Cleveland Art Museum, Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian and Tokyo Muesum of Modern Art among many others. He was also the recipient of the Japan Ceramic Society (JCS) award in 1998, one in a long and prestigious list of awards.

Hori Ichiro (b. 1952) graduated the Tajimi School of Industrial Design and apprenticed under Kato Kozo. He has been awarded the Governors prize at the Asahi Ceramics Exhibtion, and has been displayed at the Chunichi Kokusai Togei Ten as well as Nihon Dento Kogei Ten. He says, “I believe in making pottery which is born of nature…”

The surface of this bowl is like glossy rust, shot through with various shades and glimmering with mottled colors, the base irredescent red. It is by rising star Hashimoto Tomonari and comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled: Untitled Utsuwa (vessel). It is 13 cm (5-1/2 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, directly from the artist this winter.
After hand forming and sculpting the shapes, they are bisque fired, then glazed and fired again at a relatively low temperature (Between 1000 and 1100 degrees, like Raku ware). Then he builds a brick oven around each piece and brings the temperature up to 500 degrees, and adds millet or rice husk, which carbonizes the surface, creating incredible colors and random patterns leaving the viewer with a feeling like rusted or heated metal. Although many of his works are monumental, we have requested him to create some things a bit easier to ship…
Hashimoto Tomonari was born the son of a sculptor and has felt comfortable with the processes of creation since childhood. He graduated with a masters from the Kanazawa Univversity of Art in March 2017, then relocated to Shigaraki. A visit to his humble home studio is eye opening. Although he comes across as shy in conversation, when you move on to the subject of art he is all confidence. He was named a finalist for the Loewe Craft Prize in 2019 and is already making international waves around Asia. He will make his Western debut in Spring 2020. Get pieces by him while you can!

A set of five richly colored elongated plates by Shigemori Yoko enclosed in a signed wooden box titled simply Nagazara. Each uniquely decorated dish is bursting with joy, what a pleasure to wake up to breakfast served on one of these. Each is roughly 32.5 x 10.5 cm (13 x 4 inches) and all are in excellent condition. The box is annotated by her nephew.

A pair of cups in silver and blue with gold by rising star Ichikawa Toru enclosed in the original signed wood box complete with Shifuku and Shiori. Each is roughly 9.5 cm (4 inches) diameter, 8 cm (3-1/4 inches) tall and both are in new condition. There is quite a contrast, fascinating to hold and view. The silver is quite dry and heavily textured, reminiscent of Same-hada (Sharkskin) or Jakatsu (Scorpion and Snake) wares. However, the celadon is smooth and shiny, in a deep, absorbent color, while the gold shines like only gold can, creating a vivid dialog across the playful surface. To top it off, he has allowed the thin edges to degenerate just a touch, giving them a sense of fragility and impermanence, as if they are about to disappear before your eyes.
Ichikawa Toru was born in Tokyo in 1973. In 2015 he established his current studio in Bizen after 4 years of apprenticeship under another Bizen Outsider, Kakurezaki Ryuichi. He has since developed quite a following, with his shows selling out often within hours.

A futuristic white Porcelain vessel from the Divergence series of Matsumura Jun which the artist says “can be used to serve sake or tea” It is 24 cm (9-1/2 inches) long and is in excellent condition, from the artist late 2020. Matsumura Jun was born in Chiba Prefecture on the outskirts of Tokyo in 1986. He graduated from the University of South Alabama in 2010, and graduated the Tajimi Municipal Ceramics Research Facility in 2015, then went on to the Utatsuyama Research Facility in Kanazawa, leaving there in 2018. His transcendent, innovative forms have set the heart of the ceramic world racing and he has been awarded at the exhibition Tradition and Innovation-Japanese Ceramics Now as well as the 3rd Triennale of KOGEI in Kanazawa and have been presented at TEFAF in Maastricht, Art Fair Tokyo in 2018, Art Collect in London and Art Kyoto in 2019.

Sugitani Keizo was born in Osaka in 1959. In 1982 he graduated the Ceramic Art Institute of the Tekisui Museum of Art. He has selected for a number of group exhibitions including the International Ceramics Competition Mino and the Asahi Art exhibition, where he has been awarded. He has been exhibited at some of Japns top galleries as well as London, Art Miami, Maastricht, New York, Taipei and Shanghai among others.

A chawan decorated with dramatic geometrics by Shigemori Yoko enclosed in a signed wooden box titled Square Triangle Circle Chawan. The brushwork is clearly spontaneous, as the best of the Zen artists of centuries past. Lines scored into the surface are improviso, the entire impulsive without being overbearing, freehand and spur of the moment. There is no sense of premeditation. The bowl is 14.5 cm diameter, 8 cm tall and in excellent condition enclosed in a box annotated by her nephew.

A splendid antique cut glass cup selected and decorated by contemporary female lacquer artist Arai Etsuko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Glass Maki-e Hai, Yoake (Glass Sake Cup named Breaking Dawn). She said that when she first saw the glass in a street market, she instantly envisioned how the engraved patterns could be accentuated by colors and powdered precious metals. Here an interesting comparison of techniques is possible. The bowl is decorated outside, first with layers of color, then powdered gold applied over top. The rim is covered in dark blue lacquer sprinkled with gold, with red and blue diamonds alternating with clear glass connected to the stem by strands of gold. The base on the other hand, has been decorated in the opposite order, with powdered gold first, then a red sunrise in the center overtop of which is applied the colored lacquer. Allowing the pattern to be visible through the glass, but not from the decorated underside. It is 10.5 cm (4 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist this year.
Arai Etsuko (born in Kanagawa in 1980) apprenticed under Hiroshi Okada after Graduating the Kyoto School of Traditional Arts in 2003. For seven years she learned the arts of maki-e and kanshitsu, nunobari and inlay, working both on new pieces, as well as in the restoration of antique items, giving her a deep understanding of the various processes of lacquer over the centuries. In 2010 she moved out on her own. Her work is characterized by the exquisite mixture of traditional lacquer ware manufacturing methods and the delicate and gentle style unique to a woman. Her work has been exhibited at various venues throughout Japan, including the Asahi Craft exhibition and Kyoten. She was designated a Traditional Craftsperson (Dento Kogeishi) of Kyoto in 2014, Nationally in 2015. In a recent conversation she said she was drawn to the world of Lacquer by its glitter and sheen. Unlike drawing or pottery, the creation of lacquer art has no immediate sense of gratification, the imagery is brought out through layers over weeks or months, often invisible until the final stages. A most demanding medium, patience and diligence are paramount, but the result is unlike any other artform, and with proper care, can be passed through the generations, an heirloom to span the centuries.
