By Appointment is best. You might get lucky just popping by, but a great deal of the month I am out visiting artists or scouring up new items, so days in the gallery are limited.
In accordance with the request of local authorities our gallery in Kyoto will be closed from April 1st until further notice.

The fire side of this traditional form mimitsuki Shigaraki cylinder has been flattened with a deep swath of the paddle, creating a valley through which ran molten glass to which clings a thick range of crisp ash embers, a spectacular piece by Shigaraki representative Honiwa Rakunyu (d. 1963) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Opposite Tombo-no-me (dragonfly eyes) speckle the raw red surface; the result of feldspathic inclusions in the clay body. The vase is 10 inches (25.5 cm) tall and in perfect condition. This truly is a perfect example of traditional Shigaraki. Rakunyu (1929-present), originally from Nagano prefecture, apprenticed to the first Rakunyu, and succeeded the name in 1963. From that time he specialized in Shigaraki tea ware. The kiln is now headed by the Third Rakunyu.
