By Appointment is best. You might get lucky just popping by, but a great deal of the month I am out visiting artists or scouring up new items, so days in the gallery are limited.
In accordance with the request of local authorities our gallery in Kyoto will be closed from April 1st until further notice.
Shiraishi Yoichi Igneous (not a) Chawan Bowl
Please refer to our stock # 1655 when inquiring.
Here is an artist I have followed with much interest over the last few years. This bowl by Shiraishi Yoichi is like a collapsed volcanic bubble. It is 20.5 x 8 cm (7-1/2 x 3 inches) and in excellent condition, from the artist late 2020 and comes in the original signed wooden box titled: Chawan. Inside the box lid he has written a series of warnings:
Please Read the instructions before use.
Please keep it in a safe place.
Caution! may Cut your mouth.
Caution! Hot water does not collect.
Caution! fragments of the work may drop.
Caution! this artist may become famous in the near future.
Warning!! This is not a tea bowl
Shiraishi Yoichi has a unique approach to pottery, using unrefined porcelain clay in its raw form of large particles which he crushes into a mold and allows to naturally fuse, deform or disintegrate during the firing process. He was born in Fukuoka prefecture in 1981 and graduated the Tajimi City Ceramic Research Facility in 2010, still only 19 years old. He is reclusive, currently working out of his studio in Mizunami City.
