Archaic lines reminiscent of pre-historic pottery decoration adorn this tall vase by Ito Shin enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The rough clay is allowed to show without overt glazing, adding a tactile sensibility and accentuating the neolithic aesthetic. This vase is 38 cm tall and in excellent condition and in excellent condition. Although he works in ash glazes as well this seki-ware is his most distinct style.
Ito Shin was born in Chiba in 1952 (not to be confused with the Shigaraki based younger potter of the same name, different Kanji), and moved to Mashiko where he studied under Kikuchi Akira in Mashiko. He has exhibited at the National Traditional Craft Exhibition (Nihon Dento Kogeiten) as well as the National Ceramics Exhibition (Nihon Togeiten) among many others.
