A pair of yunomi cups in pale glaze, the side gashed out of which peak a red bodied crab by Sasaki Niroku enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The larger is 3 inches (7.5 cm) diameter and both are in fine condition. Niroku Yaki was established in Ehime by the son of a tile maker in the late 1800s. Struck by the beauty of Iki-ningyo from Kumamoto, Niroku I (1857-1935) began a journey around Japan studying sculpting and pottery before returning to Ehime to establish his kiln. Niroku work was highly acclaimed for intimate detail and refined Sencha taste. It was prized both domestically at National Exhibitions and Internationally. Pieces are held in the collection of the Imperial Household among others. This set is by the third generation head of the family.
