An Exquisite rugged Hagi vase by Living National Treasure Miwa Kyusetsu X (1895-1981) enclosed in the original signed and stamped wooden box in turn enclosed in a black lacquered wooden box. A swatch of pale slip circles the dramatically textured oni-clay peppered with fine silica stones, a strong statement. The red earth is revealed around the base, accentuating the dynamics of the pot. It is roughly 8-1/2 inches (21.5 cm) diameter, 6 inches (15 cm) tall and in fine condition.
Kyusetsu X (known as Kyuwa) is most known for his excellence in creating traditional Zen Tea ware, and his bowls are some of the most sought after in Japan. The first Living National Treasure of Hagi, It was Kyusetsu who reinvigorated the Hagi craft movement in the mid Showa era for which he received the prestigious title of Mukei Bunkazai in 1970.
