A rare blue gleams on the edges of this small cuboid by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Hen Hana-ire. The surface is heavily abraded as with a chisel, giving plenty of grip for the natural blown-ash glaze. It is 9 x 6.5 x 9 cm (3-1/2 x 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist.

A brooding dark bowl blasted with color, a pool of green on one edge seeming to weep through to form a bead of murky green on the outside by Furutani Taketsohi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shizen-yu Guinomi. It is just over 6 cm (2-1/2 inches) diameter 4.2 cm (1-3/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.

Every surface of this large tsubo by Furutani Taketoshi has been cut away in ascending and descending chevrons down the fire side of which crystalline glazes form in pools where the descending chevrons meet. On the fringes of the blast of ash are various shades of red while opposite shiseki inclusions bubble out from the raw pale clay. It is 32 cm (13 inches diameter) 37 cm (15 inches) tall and in excellent condition, enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen Yu Shinogi Tsubo, directly from the artist.

A secret technique is used to induce the wide cracking which does not penetrate the sides of this Tsubo wrapped in fingers of natural ash glaze by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Yabure Tsubo. Green ash viciously assaults one side, the color spreading out over the surface, overshadowing the darkness where it was buried in the embers, and wraps around the body in streaks of color leading to shell impressed eyelets on a surface burnt orange and black. It culminates in a single crystalline bead of green glass. The tsubo is 27 cm (11 inches) diameter, 32.5 cm (13 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.

A masterpiece by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Shinogi Tsubo. Shinogi is this method of cutting away portions of the surface, in this case in waving patterns. This both allows the natural ash glaze a foot hold as it blows through the kiln, and as it cools, allows the molten ash to flow and create striking patterns on the surface. This vessel is 25 x 16.5 x 30 cm (10 x 6-1/2 x 12 inches) and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist.

This is a most unique work, a faceted Kurinuki chawan carved and hollowed out from a solid block of clay by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Shinogi Chawan. Shinogi is a term referring to a blade, and is the artist’s term for pieces from which he has cut away the surface. In this case, he carved and formed the outside from a single lump of clay, cutting away to reveal the form. Then he hollowed out the inside, making the interior slightly fluted to make it even lighter and easy to handle. Then the foot was carved away. The entire is a most unique sensory experience. Close your eyes when you rotate the bowl in the palm of your hand before drinking the tea and enjoy the feeling of the ash blasted and ribbed earth. It is 11 cm (4 plus inches) diameter 9 cm (3-3/4 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.

The Tea bowls from this family are a textbook image of kiln effects, and this piece by Furutani Taketoshi is no exception. Cleft marks in the red clay remain where it was stacked in the kiln, surrounded by running ash, an alpine pool of crystal green forming inside with hints of lavender peering through the blast of green. The form is bold with a slight taper, both inviting and yet trapping the aroma of the frothy green tea. The rim undulates slightly, and cups gently to the lips on the drinking side. It comes with the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Tsutsu Chawan. The bowl is 12 cm (5 inches) diameter, 10 cm (4 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.

The vertical sides turn out ever so slightly at the rim allowing a view into the crystalline lake pooled inside this deep bowl by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Chawan. The interior is entirely covered in natural ash glaze, colors varying from light green to iron red to twilight gray with the aforementioned pool of crystalline green in the center. This is in stark contrast to the coal strip fraught with green rivulets outside, which covers about one third of the exterior, the remainder stark adobe colored clay showcasing the white feldspar for which Shigaraki is known. How perfectly does this vessel show off the character of clay?! Furutani Taketoshi has built up the clay I a method allowing the natural rough surface to remain undisturbed, a deep gouge around the shoulder filled with a pool of alpine green crystals and the neck meandering up like a natural crag. Soft gray underlies the flying ash and rivulets of fresh green cascading down the sides. The beauty of Shigaraki lies in its ability to connect the various elements of nature from which it is created in a manner which appears untouched by human hand. Viewing the pootery brings a calmness, a serenity as if one were leaning up against the trunk of a great tree. This vase is roughly 12 cm (5 inches) diameter 17.5 cm (7 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist and comes inclosed in a signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen Yu Kinuta Hanaire. A Kinuta (Fulling Block) is a wood mallet used to beat cloth to soften it during the Edo period. It is a traditional shape in Japanese pottery, especially among Iga and Shigaraki wares.

A starkly traditional tsubo showing off the plethora of effects garnered from the inferno in an Anagam kiln by Furutani Taketoshi titled simply Shigaraki Shizen-yu Tsubo. It is formed in a medieval fashion with small foot growing in stages to a round wide shoulder, which then pinches to a small neck with pinched mouth. The coloration is fabulous, with rich greens fading to olive to crusty black on the blast side, while the natural clay dusted with flying ash shows off the quintessential shiseki and tombo-no-me for which Shigaraki is known. It is 29 cm (11-1/2 inches) diameter, 35.5 cm (14 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.

A slightly smaller Tsutsu-gata (Cylinder shaped) Chawan made for outdoor use by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Tabi Chawan. A Tabi-chawan, literally Travel Tea Bowl, is usually slightly smaller, made to be carried and used out of doors or in a setting other than one’s own abode. An incredible landscape plays across the surface, calling to mind moss covered rocks, flowing water, silhouetted hills and the twilit sky. The rim shows a hint of shinshoku, or flame degradation, under the coating of ash, a coveted effect born from the inferno. This one is 9.5 cm diameter, 9cm (roughly 3-3/4 inches) and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.

The fire is still alive on this striking Shigaraki Tsubo by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Yohen Tsubo. Yohen, literally translated Kiln-altered, is a word for the unexpected results, or fortuitous accidents of firing. In this case, they are likely speaking of the unusual coloration of the running ash wrapping around the blackened surface. Kiln effects are what this family is known for, and this does not disappoint. It is 27.5 x 27.5 x 33.5 cm (11 inches diameter, 13 inches tall) and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.

A cluster of ash and slag has adhered to the shoulder of this scarred and charred single flower vase by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Shinogi Ichirin Hanaire. The exterior has been thickly potted then sliced away in a slightly swirlin pattern in a style the artist calls Shinogi. A glacial lake of alpine green pools inside the Caldera-like top of this striking vase by Furutani Taketoshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Shizen-yu Hanaire. It is 14 cm (5-1/2 inches) diameter, 15.5 cm (6 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.
Furutani Taketoshi was born the son of master craftsman Furutani Hirofumi in 1974, graduating the Shigaraki Industrial High School Ceramics department in 1992 before entering the Shiga prefectural Ceramics Research Facility where he learned first Small Rokuro wheel technique, graduating the following year. In 1993 he would find himself under the tutelage of Suzuki Iwau before re-entering for a second course at the Research Facility, graduating in 1995. From then he returned to the family kiln where he learned in the time-honored tradition from both his grandfather Churoku I and father Hirofumi (Churokuk II). In 2013 he was named a Dento Kogeishi Traditional Craftsman. Since he has exhibited consistently at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. Straight out of a Miyazaki Hayao fantasy is this Future Fossil Series Koro incense burner by Watanabe Takuma which comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Bizen Koro Mirai Kaseki (future Fossil). It is 13 cm (5 inches diameter, 16.5 cm (6-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist this summer.
Watanabe Takuma was born in Hyogo prefecture in 1968, and after graduating Kansai Daigaku University in 1991, began studying Bizen ware under Yamauchi Atsushi. In 1996 he entered the Bixen Toen Kiln. Shortly thereafter he began exhibiting and has receied numerous awards at the Okayama Prefectural Exhibition (Okayama Ken Bijutsu ten), National Traditional Crafts Exhibition (Nihon Dento Kogeiten), Issui-kai-ten, as well as being selected for the influential Tanabe Museum Modern Forms in Tea Exhibition among others. He built his own kin in 2006.

Black green and silver bands like a core sample of crustal layers from some fantastic planet decorate the brushed and impressed clay of this large piece by Kyoto Artist Morino Taimei enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The vase is 10-1/2 inches (26.5 cm) tall, 9-1/2 by 5 inches (24 x 12.5 cm) and is in perfect condition. The box as well is like new. Taimei was born in Kyoto in 1934, and was first accepted into the Nitten National Exhibition at a relatively young age in 1957 (a year before graduating the Kyoto Municipal University of Fine Art!). In 1960 he received the prestigious Hokutosho prize at the same National Exhibition. In the early 60s he worked as a guest professor at the University of Chicago. Upon his return to Japan his career began to lift off with a second Hokutosho Prize at the Nitten, followed by The governors prize and others at the Gendai Kogei Ten (Modern National Crafts Exhibition). He was subsequently selected for display at the Kyoto and Tokyo National Museums in 1972 and was accepted into the first Nihon Togei Ten that same year. Since his list of exhibitions and prizes has continued to grow, with subsequent selections in the Tokyo and Kyoto museums of Art, as well as exhibitions in Paris, Italy, America, Canada, Denmark and others. Last year he received the Japan Art Academy Prize, an award to a work of art similar in weight to the bestowing of Living National Treasure to an artist. This puts the artist in a small club, rare and important, adding this to a collection honors the culmination of a life-times work.

Gold disks like suns gleam in a shimmering blue cloud of mother of pearl stars on this dry lacquer vase by Okada Yuji dating from 2011. In the center, a golden spout rises up from a deep pool, like a digitized map of the event horizon of a black hole. An incredible shape and incredible work of art by this important post-war dreamer. Each golden spot visible on teh surface is hirame, not a tissue thin gold overlay, but a solid gold disc embedded into the surface the surface then ground down to reveal the most amount of gold. The vase is 34 cm (13-1/2 inches) diameter and in perfect condition.
Okada Yuji was born in Kyoto in 1948 and graduated with honors from the Kyoto Hiyoshi-ga-oka High School Lacquer Course, Receiving top prize for his graduation project. In 1969 he apprenticed under Ito Hiroshi, and the following year was accepted into the Kyoten (Kyoto Prefectural Art Exhibition) as well as the Kyoto Kogei Bijutsu Sakka Kyokai exhibition (Kyoto Kogei Association of artists) where he would be awarded. This begins his solo career. In 1972 he establishes himself as an independent artist, and his work is accepted into the Nitten National Exhibition. In 1973 he is accepted into the Nihon Gendai Kogeiten (Modern Crafts Exhibition). He would subsequently exhibit regularly with the above mentioned Nitten, Nihon Gendai Kogeiten, Kyoten, Kyoto Kogei Bijutsu Sakka Kyokai and later at the Urushi no Bi-ten (Nihon Shikko Kyokai Japanese Lacquer Association) exhibitions as well as solo and group shows, receiving many awards over the years. Later serving as a judge at several of these events. Throughout the 70s and early 80s he would receive numerous awards. In 1985 he took a professorship at the Dohda Art School. 1996 he enters a new phase, having become well known for restoration of lacquer arts, he begins to actively promote restoration work in addition to creating his own artwork. He would go on to restore over 3500 works of lacquer art before 2022. In 1999 he exhibits three Dry-Lacquer works at the New York Art Festival. This is a turning point in his career, when he begins debuting his latest works overseas in Germany, England and America. He retires from the Kyoto City Dohda Art School in 2003 and establishes a lacquer research center in the Ninenzaka area of Eastern Kyoto. In 2006 he opens the Lacquer Studio Shiun to pass on skills to a younger generation and becomes a member of the International Council of Museums Committee for Conservation. Post 2008 he concentrated on sharing his knowledge and technique with students and on the promotion of lacquer art through symposiums and events around the globe while at the same time continued to research into the techniques and restoration of lacquer artworks. Work by the artist is held in the collections of: the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Denver Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts New York, New Orleans Museum of Fine Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum and Shanghai Art Museum among many others.

A massive Bizen Charger with a large central spot like a sunflare by Kengo Masamune (b. 1954) enclosed in the original wooden box displayed at the 1987 Nihon Togei Ten IX (The Ninth Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition) and can be viewed as item number 169 in the catalog. It is huge at 21 inches (53 cm) in diameter, 3 inches (8 cm) tall. The exhibition label remains on the back of the dish and it comes with the exhibition catalog.

A very heavy unusual charger by modern avant-garde artist Suzuki Goro decorated with Oribe colored graffiti of traditional themes enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Combs, hairpins and bamboo and ceramic pipes in orange, green and black decorate the pale sand-textured surface of the massive charger. Typical of this artist is cut from a very thick slab with an irregular edge. On back a self portrait hunches over the clay forming a large vase, the caption beside reading Nanikuso! (I will not lose!) The dish is 17-1/2 inches (44 cm) diameter, weighing more than 7 kilograms (15 pounds) and is in perfect condition! Goro has a list of shows and prizes too lengthy to go through, but the highlights are, Nitten National Art Exhibition, Nihon Shin Kogei Ten (New National Crafts Exhibition), Nihon Gendai Kogei Ten (National Modern Crafts Exhibition), Asahi Togei Ten-(First of Show and governors prize), as well as the Kofukai Ten among many others.

The purity and perfection of this takes your breath away. It is a gorgeous piece by Hattori Tatsuya and comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Ginsai Wan. The bowl is 12 x 13.5 x 8 cm (4-1/2 x 5-1/4 x 3 inches) and is in perfect condition, from the artist late 2020. He is a master of silver/platinum/titanium glazes, and his forms, especially his tea pots, are very popular and generally sell out quickly.
Hattori Tatsuya was born in Tajimi, home of Shino and Oribe wares, in 1978 and was raised in the vibrant pottery scene of that region. However, he had no interest in pottery until after graduating with a degree in business from university. Taking a hiatus from studies and work, he stumbled onto the path of the potter by accident (or was it fate). He entered the Tajimi Ceramics Research Facility, graduating in 2004. His work was selected for display at the Mashiko Ceramic Art Exhibition and Asahi Togeiten Ceramics Exhibition that year. He took a position as a ceramic designer at a local company, working nights and weekends on his own art and promoting himself in the off hours until he felt he could afford to devote himself completely to the wheel. At first he concentrated on making decorative works, but soon began moving steadily toward functional vessels, enjoying the dialog between the work and the user.

Gold bubbles out from the scraffito marked white surface of this kogo incense box with accompanying black and opaque glass incense burner by Kondo Takahiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The glass box is 9.5 x 11.3 x 10 cm. The pottery box is 6 x 5 x 4 cm and both are in excellent condition.
Takahiro (b. 1958) was born the grandson of Living National Treasure Kondo Yuzo. However he graduated Hosei University not with a degree in sculpture or crafts, but in Literature. From there he studied at the Kyoto Prefectural Technical Institute of Ceramics, followed by a year at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Research. 15 years later he would spend a year in Edinburgh studying glass making, and with this combination of skills, was born the silver mist series for which he is so highly acclaimed. Work by him is held in Museums throughout the world, including the National Museum of Scotland, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Museum of Arts & Design, New York, Spencer Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Art Gallery NSW, Sydney, Hamilton Art Gallery, Australia, Miho Museum. Hashimoto Tomonari was born the son of a sculptor and has felt comfortable with the processes of creation since childhood. He graduated with a masters from the Kanazawa University of Art in March 2017, then relocated to Shigaraki. A visit to his humble home studio is eye opening. Although he comes across as shy in conversation, when you move on to the subject of art, he is all confidence. He was named a finalist for the Loewe Craft Prize in 2019 and is making international waves around the world. Work by him is held in the V&A in London, LACMA and a large sculpture has recently been installed in his home prefecture of Wakayama.

A drinking set covered in gold foil and Rimpa inspired florals by Kuroki Kuniaki enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Tebuki Glass Shuki and named inside Kinasi Korin. There are two cups, a Tokkuri sake flask, and two chopstick holders, one saphire the other ruby. The Tokkuri pot is 5 inches (12.5 cm) tall and all is in excellent condition. Kuroki Kuniaki was born in Miyazaki prefecture in 1945. He began his career employed straight out of school by the Yamaya Glass Company in 1963. It would only be a decade later that he would venture out on his own, to begin creating unique works of glass art. Yet another ten years would pass before he went fully independent in 1984. He began with a project to revitalize Edo style Cut glass (Satsuma Kiriko), and established his workshop in 1989. He was awarded the National Order of Excellence for modern craft in 1991 and began to garner attention overseas. He was awarded in Paris in 1995, Rome in 1996 and Athens in 1997. Since he has been exhibited widely throughout Japan, as well as the US, Singapore, Throughout Europe, Taiwan, Australia among many others. His works have been collected by the Imperial Household Agency and the Royal Family. They are held in the collection of Philadelphia, Denmark Glass Museum, Peking Palace Museum and Kitazawa Museum among others.

A small unusual Seed-Like basin in earth tones by Gomi Kenji enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled O-pa, both the vessel and the title seem open to interpretation. It is 29 x 21 x 16 cm (11-1/2 x 8-1/4 x 6 inches) and in excellent condition.
Gomi kenji was born in Nagano in 1978. After graduating from the prestigious Waseda University, he went to Okinawa where he studied Kokuba-Tougei, Tsuboya ware, which has been produced since the 17th century, in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. In 2004 he moved to Toki city in Gifu, then to Kasama in 2005. He is now Designated Professor, Kasama College of Ceramic Art. The process of firing ceramics is central to the creation of his works. The organic shape of the work is the result of choosing the most logical form from the viewpoint of firing. In addition, the color and texture that make you feel the full earthiness can be obtained by burying it in rice husks and firing it. He has been displayed at the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, the Kikuchi Biennale, Mashiko Ceramic Art Exhibition, and in 2014, he won the Grand Prix at the 10th International Ceramics Competition Mino, Ceramic Arts Category. Work by him is held in Museums here in Japan and throughout the world, including the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum, Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Gifu, Museum of Ceramic Art, Hyougo and Victoria & Albert Museum, London among others.

Scales of color overlap in the crystal basin of this oblong form by Kobayashi Mitsugi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Mosaic Mon Sara (mosaic pattern dish). It is 8 x 6-1/2 x 1-1/2 inches (21 x 16.5 x 3.5 cm) and in excellent condition.
Kobayashi Mitsugi, born in Aichi prefecture in 1932, and graduated the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts. He was awarded at the Nihon Gendai Kogei Ten (Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Exhibition) in 1973 Kogeisho-Prize and 1980 Governor of Tokyo Prize as well as the Tokusen-Prize at the Nitten National Exhibition in 1993. He has been exhibited widely in Japan as well as Germany, France, New York and Budapest among others. His works were featured in the 1978 “Modern Japan Craft”, at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. The 1982 “World Glass Now ’82” at the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, the 1991 “Biennale Internationale Du Verre D'Art Contemporain”, France where he received the Gold Prize culminating in a 2005 Solo Exhibition at the Paramita Museum, Mie. He is held in the Kanagawa Prefectural Gallery, Museo Municipal de Arte en Vidrio (Madrid), Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, and Paramita among others.

Here is an amazing vase by the most sought after of all Japanese potters, Kawai Kanjiro dating from the 1940s, enclosed in a fine kiri box endorsed by the Kawai Kanjiro Museum. The box is signed Kanjiro Saku, Gosu Hana-ire Hentsubo, Kawai Koha (Made by Kawai Kanjiro, a Gosu blue flower vase of altered urn shape, endorsed by Kawai Koha. Koha is Kanjiros daughter, and the current head of the Kawai Kanjiro Museum. The stately composure of its dramatic silhouette is surpassed only by the striking flashes of color dashed across the blue surface. Subtle yet seeming to speak of an excess of energy, the vase epitomizes work by this preeminent artist. The trapezoidal base rises to an elongated ovular center, from which extends a sharpened angular mouth. It is difficult to describe the power of this piece; one must hold it to truly appreciate the brilliance of its artistry. The vase is 8 inches (21 cm) tall, 5-1/2 by 4-1/2 inches (11 x 14 cm) across and is in perfect condition. Kanjiro was a true artist by nature, and together with Hamada Shoji, set a pattern of study for modern potters. After graduating the Tokyo School of Industrial Design, he came to study in Kyoto, eventually establishing his own kiln on the Gojo-no-Saka (It remains standing today and is a must see for anyone visiting Kyoto). Together with compatriots Hamada Shoji and Bernard Leach (with whom he traveled throughout Asia) established the modern Mingei movement in ceramics, the most influential ceramics movement in the 20th century. His research on glazes (of which he developed thousands over a lifetime of work) remains influential as well. Refusing to be limited to ceramics, Kanjiro also worked in bronze, wood and paint. An interesting final note on this unusual artist, when offered the title of Living National Treasure, an honor bestowed on very few, he declined.

The looping object bound tightly in the center stirs mixed emotions, both reminiscent of bondage as well as the celebratory twisted rope talismans displayed at New years and in front of holy places. It is 8 x 7 x 11 cm (roughly 3 x 3 x 4-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist. When prompted about her message she said: I feel that there is something vaguely present that is never visible in my everyday life. It always speaks to me like a pulse beating deep within my thin skin, insisting on its existence. Although I have been expressing myself through painting for nearly ten years, now that I think about it, I feel like I've always been struggling to discover its true identity.
When I encountered ceramics for the first time, I suddenly felt that I had found the means to respond to this vague phantom within.
In this medium I constantly interact with unknown experiences; I am able to feel a certain sense of this diaphanous existence and create works through which I can touch people's five senses; gradually giving back to society. For the first time, I feel like I am a part of this world.
Goto Miho entered the ceramics course at Osaka University of Arts in 2021, already an advanced student initially trained in painting. She was awarded at the 14th Prince Takamado Memorial Netsuke Competition in 2022. In 2023 whe entered Ceramic Design Institute of Tajimi City, and the same year was recipient of the 9th Contemporary Art and Culture Foundation Ceramic Artist Support Grant. Her work was also selected for the Ceramic Synergy Exhibition held at the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art. This is the first time her work has been offered to an overseas audience.

This cage of raw white porcelain by Goto Miho, like dried bones, contains a glistening membrane, a mysterious ceramic sculpture by this young artist from her Heartbeat of the Skin series. It is 14 x 15 x 16.5 cm (roughly 5-1/2 x 6 x 6-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist. When prompted about her message she said: I feel that there is something vaguely present that is never visible in my everyday life. It always speaks to me like a pulse beating deep within my thin skin, insisting on its existence. Although I have been expressing myself through painting for nearly ten years, now that I think about it, I feel like I've always been struggling to discover its true identity.

An elegant metallic colored set of 2 guinomi and 1 Tokkuri, perfect or sharing chilled sake on a hot summer night, by Masafumi Doi enclosed in the original signed and compartmentalized wooden box titled Tessaiji Shuki (Metal Glazed Porcelain Sake Vessels). The cups are 5.5 cm diameter (2-1/4 inches), the same height. The Tokkuri is 11.5 cm (4-1/2 inches) tall and all are in excellent condition. We picked these up earlier this year when we visited him in Nara, but are just bringing them out now as we open the new gallery space.
Doi Masafumi was born in Nara prefecture in 1972, and graduated the Aichi prefectural ceramic research facility in 2000. For the next seven years he would work at a kiln in Kyoto, absorbing the many styles and techniques associated with Kyo-yaki before establishing his own kiln back in Nara. He held is first solo exhibition in Kyoto in 2009, and in 2011 was awarded at the Nihon Togeiten National Ceramics Exhibition, where he has been featured many times.

A surprisingly relaxed cup with steep sides decorated both inside and out with a single joined black brush trace by Shigemori Yoko enclosed in a signed wooden box. It is covered in a millet colored glaze with a crawling dry black line circling the body. The form is slightly slumped on one side, exuding an unperturbed confidence. It is roughly 7.5 cm (3 inches) diameter and in excellent condition, in a box annotated by her nephew.
Shigemori Yoko (1953-2021) was born in Kagoshima. Yoko came to Kyoto where she initially studied painting at the Kyoto Tankidai Art College, then moved to ceramics at the Kyoto Municipal Art University where she studied traditional pottery techniques under Kondo Yutaka before entering advanced courses under Yagi Kazuo, graduating in 1979. Her first solo exhibitions were held while still a student, at Gallery Iteza in Kyoto. She eschewed the world of competitive exhibitions in favor of the intimacy of private galleries, and her list of solo exhibitions is expansive. She received the Yagi Kazuo prize in 1986 and 1988 at the Nihon Gendai Togeiten. She was one of five artists featured in Toh, volume 76, The first issue dedicated to Kyoto Potters. Toh was at the time the most in depth survey of important contemporary potters published in 1993. Her work is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Lavender tinged glaze covers the sandy clay of this Hagi platter by Miwa Eizo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled simply Sara (Dish). The glaze crawls and pulls back here and there, leaving raw edges and windows of sunburnt or blackened clay exposed. It measures 32.5 x 32.5 x 6 cm (13 x 13 x 2 inches) and is in perfect condition.
Miwa Eizo (1946-1999) was born the second son of Living National Treasure Miwa Kyusetsu XI. He graduated the Private Musashino Art University and was a member of Japanese Traditional Crafts Society, often displayed at their National Exhibition (Nihon Dento Togeiten). He was recipient of top prize at the Tanabe Museums prestigious Modern Tea Forms Exhibition (Gendai Cha no Yu Zokei Ten). ). Unfortunately, he died in 1999 at the early age of fifty two. His brother Ryosaku succeeded the family name as Miwa Kyusetsu XII. He is held in the collection of the British Museum and The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo among others. For more on this artist see the book: The Ceramic Works of Eizo Miwa (2001) published posthumously by the preeminent Kuroda Toen art gallery of Tokyo.

A large organic Kurinuki Mizusashi in deep rich lavender glaze with ash charring by Kaneta Masanao enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 10 x 9-1/2 x 8 inches (25 x 24 x 20 cm) and in fine condition, dating circa 1995. Kaneta Masanao (born 1953) likely needs no introduction, certainly one of Hagi’s most well known names, he has been displayed both nationally and internationally innumerable times including the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten National Traditional Crafts Exhibition, Nihon Togei Ten National Ceramics Exhibtion, Chunichi Kokusai Togeiten Ceramics Exhibition, . His pieces are in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum and Museum of Modern Art Brooklyn. Ise Shrine, home to the Japanese Gods, holds a Tea Bowl by him as well.

Although an eighth-generation potter inheriting an overtly conservative tradition, he has transcended limitations, and was one of the first to begin carrying Hagi into the 21st century. An eccentric crusty bowl, very different, by Hashimoto Tomonari enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Raku Yaki Yohen Chawan. Unlike his normal burnished and color ridden surfaces, this bowl is ominous, matte, shot through with pin-hole-textures and rivulets streaming from the rim. It is like something from deep within the universe, an ancient traveler which has been charred and scarred on its way through the atmosphere. Not only that but it is slightly deeper than his normal bowls, 10.5 cm (4 inches) to the rim, and misshapen, 10.5 to 11.5 cm ((4-4-1/2 inches) diameter, making it fit better in the hand. On a recent visit to the artist, after viewing a number of his newest bowls, I had to ask: Which one is your favorite? Without hesitation he went straight to this one.

Vibrant colors and glistening gold decorate this leaf shaped sculpture by Matsuda Yuriko enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled HASU (Lotus Leaf). It is roughly 37 cm (15 inches) diameter and in excellent condition.
Matsuda Yuriko was born in Ashiya, Hyōgō Prefecture in 1943nd lives and works in Oshino, Yamanashi Prefecture. Yuriko is an avid exhibitor; it is a wonder she has time to do any work at all. Both within Japan (Nihon Togei Ten, Gendai Togei Ten etc.) and without she has an impressive list of exhibitions in a host of countries. She received the Yagi Kazuo prize in 1986 among many others. According to the book “Touch Fire”, Many of the women artists included in this exhibition are independent innovators who work outside the constraints of Japanese ceramic traditions. However, several of the artists, including Matsuda Yuriko, continue to use traditional techniques with skills that rival, if not exceed, those of their predecessors, and in doing so they create new and challenging contemporary ceramic art. They reinterpret the traditional decorative technique for porcelain vessels, called iro-e over-glaze enameling, and transposes its motifs onto nonfunctional objects. Her beautifully enameled iro-e porcelain sculptures are witty odes to two favorite subjects: the female body and Mount Fuji. A Tea Pot by Hattori Tatsuya enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Ginsai Pot alongside a small doodle of the tea pot itself. It is 15 x 11 x 10 cm (6 x 4-1/4 x 4 inches) and in excellent condition, from the artist this past winter. He is a master of silver glazes, and his forms, especially his tea pots, are very popular and generally sell out quickly, we are lucky to be able to offer one.
Hattori Tatsuya was born in Tajimi, home of Shino and Oribe wares, in 1978 and was raised in the vibrant pottery scene of that region. However, he had no interest in pottery until after graduating with a degree in business from university. Taking a hiatus from studies and work, he stumbled onto the path of the potter by accident (or was it fate). He entered the Tajimi Ceramics Research Facility, graduating in 2004. His work was selected fr display at the Mashiko Ceramic Art Exhibition and Asahi Togeiten Ceramics Exhibition that year. He took a position as a ceramic designer at a local company, working nights and weekends on his own art and promoting himself in the off hours until he felt he could afford to devote himself completely to the wheel. At first he concentrated on making decorative works, but soon began moving steadily toward functional vessels, enjoying the dialog between the work and the user.

a ghostly bowl in the shape of a curled leaf, a wash of thin black accentuating the folds in the hadn formed clay by Shigemori Yoko enclosed in a wooden box titled Happa-bachi (Leaf Bowl). It is slab formed, one of her favorite methods, covered in black then washed down revealing the clay under a thin fog of black, which has remained in the crevices. It measures 15 x 19 x 9.5 cm (6 x 7-1/2 x just under 4 inches) and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist’s family, the box signed inside by her brother Naoki.
Shigemori Yoko (1953-2021) was born in Kagoshima. Yoko came to Kyoto where she initially studied painting at the Kyoto Tankidai Art College, then moved to ceramics at the Kyoto Municipal Art University where she studied traditional pottery techniques under Kondo Yutaka before entering advanced courses under avant-garde Yagi Kazuo, graduating in 1979. Her first solo exhibitions were held while still a student at Gallery Iteza in Kyoto. She eschewed the world of competitive exhibitions in favor of the intimacy of private galleries, and her list of solo exhibitions is expansive. She received the Yagi Kazuo prize in 1986 and 1988 at the Nihon Gendai Togeiten National Modern Ceramics Exhibition. An exquisite vessel in white with elegant stripes of soft color by hard to find Niwa Ryochi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Senmon Tsubo. There is a palpable grace to the piece which seems to reflect the Japanese appreciation of silence and shadows. It is 27.5 cm (11 inches) diameter, 33 cm (13 inches) tall and in excellent condition. Hirashimizu-yaki started when the Lord Niwa Jizaemon, invited Tojihei Ono, a potter from Ibaraki, to make pottery using clay from Chitoseyama during the Bunka era of the late Edo period. There are four kilns in operation today. During the Bunsei era (1818-1829) Abe Kakuzaemon of the Soma clan visited here, built a kiln, and spread the techniques of Soma-yaki pottery, which contributed to Hirashimizu becoming a large pottery-producing area. During the middle of the Meiji period (late 19th century) when the area was enjoying its most prosperous time, over 30 kilns were in operation. Today only 4 exist. Niwa Ryochi was born in Yamagata in 1931. In 1946 he entered apprenticeship at the Ryusen kiln, and due to circumstance, became 4th head of the kiln in 1950. He has exhibited at the Kofu-Kai, and Nihon Dento Kogeiten National Traditional Crafts exhibition as well as at many of Japans top galleries.

A ghostly white crackle-glazed chawan by Living National Treasure Shimizu Uichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hakuyu Chawan (White Glazed Tea Bowl). It is 12.5 cm (5 inches) diameter10 cm (4 inches) tall and in excellent condition. It comes wrapped in a silk crepe pouch and retains the original artists shiori.
Shimizu Uichi (1926-2004) was born in Kyoto the son of a ceramic dealer. Discarding the family business, he apprenticed in plastic arts under future Living National Treasure Ishiguro Munemaro. His work retains some principal elements of his teachers style while incorporating an understated elegance and avant-garde spirit of challenge uncommon for his time. He was first exhibited at the Nitten in 1951, receiving numerous awards there since. He also took the gold medal at the Prague International Exhibition, and was at the Brussels World Exposition. He is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum, Kyoto Museum of Modern art, Clark Center and the Freer Gallery among many others.
