Pale jade spots dot the incised surface of this unusual vase by Nagae Shigekazu enclosed in the original signed wooden box retaining the Shiori and Shifuku. The vase, if not for its distant, moon-like quality, has a very pop-art-presence, blending both the austerity of Japanese traditional aesthetics with contemporary art. An iconic square bottle by one of the most important Japanese artists, Kawai Kanjiro, enclosed in the original signed wooden box. In fact it could be called Kurinuki Ishime Chawan, as the rough surface of this bowl by Inayoshi Osamu is created not only by carving or sculpting the bowl from a solid lump of clay, a technique called Kurinuki, but the artist then takes round stones with various textures he has gathered and works the surface with the stones, allowing the texture to transfer to the drying clay before glazing.
