A dramatic growth of porcelain mixed with tinged iron clay by Yamaguchi Mio dating from 2023, one of her first ventures into white. It is 13.5 x 13 x 12 cm (roughly 5 inches diameter) and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist. It comes with a signed wooden box, which will be ordered upon sale.
Yamaguchi Mio was born in Aichi prefecture in 1992, and graduated advanced studies at the Aichi University of Education in 2017. While still at University, her works were selected for show at the JoryuTogei Ten Female Ceramic Artist Association Exhibition (2014). In 2016 she was awarded at the 3rd Kogei in Kanazawa Competition, Grand Prize at the Ceramic Art in the Present Tense Exhibition at the Hagi Uragami Museum as well received the governors prize at the 5oth Female Ceramic Artist Association Exhibition. A massive Blue Sculpture titled Sway by Yamaguchi Mio created as a reflection of the layered growth of organic forms such as shells and pine cones. Inspired by this natural growth, her work is likened to life in the depths of the ocean, along the seashore, of the layers of earth itself. She has made few works in blue, one of which is currently on display at the Chicago Art Institute for those in the area. This is a masterpiece. An undulating ceramic sculpture of overlapping layers reminiscent of a scholar stone by Yamaguchi Mio titled Wakuraba. Wakuraba is a word from the Manyoshu, it implies a leaf which has changed color due to age or insects (like a late summer leaf yellowing in comparison to leaves around it) or on a completely different level can mean to suddenly and unexpectedly meet. It is roughly 38 cm (15 inches) diameter, 83 cm (32-1/2 inches) tall and is in excellent condition, directly from the artist. This piece was runner up for top prize at the Kasama Ceramic Triennale.

A large vase in earthen colors by Kasama legend Wada Morihiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Sounka-mon Utsuwa. It is 15.5 × 9 x 47cm (6 x 3-1/2 x 18-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition.
Wada Morihiro (1944-2008) was born in Hyogo prefecture and apprenticed under Kyotos Tomimoto Kenkichi before moving to Kasama in 1976. He has been displayed at the Nihon Togei Ten (National Ceramics Exhibition), Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibition) Gold medal at the Florence International Ceramics Exhibition in 1980 as well as being displayed at the Victoria Albert and Smithsonian as one representative of modern Japanese ceramics in 1983. He subsequently received the Japanese Ceramic Society Award in 1988, one of the highest honors for a Japanese potter.

Splendid Keshiki, it is difficult to describe this stunning square platter by Bizen master Kakurezaki Ryuichi (b. 1950) which comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The massive dish is torn and scraped from a single thick slab of clay. Spattered with natural ash glaze, it is a true masterpiece by this most sought after artist. The piece is 16-1/2 inches (42 cm) square and in excellent condition. It is likely that Ryuichi needs no introduction, one of the most well known of Bizen potters, he is interestingly originally not from Bizen but far off Nagasaki, which seems to have gifted him with the ability to see the clays potential beyond conventional form. He graduated the Osaka University of Fine Arts, then enjoyed a long apprenticeship under Bizen Living National Treasure Isezaki Jun before opening his own kiln in 1986. Combining traditional technique with modern architectural form, He was recipient of the Japan Ceramics Society Award, Grand Prize at the Fifth Contemporary Tea Ceremony Utensils Exhibition, Tanabe Museum and has a list of public and private exhibitions which go beyond this brief add, including a showing in New York this year. His works are held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum of London, National Ceramic Museum of France and the Tanabe Museum among others. A prominent mimitsuki mentori vase by Kakurezaki Ryuichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The tapering rectangular form has been gouged and cut, slabs torn off and odd holes sliced into the sides and top. The clay is dark and shiny, spattered with green ash. The vase is 15 inches (38 cm) tall, the base 5 x 8-1/2 inches (12.5 x 21.5 cm) and in excellent condition. It is likely that Ryuichi needs no introduction, one of the most well known of Bizen potters, he is interestingly originally not from Bizen but far off Nagasaki, which seems to have gifted him with the ability to see the clays potential beyond conventional form. A very heavy unusual charger by modern avant-garde artist Suzuki Goro decorated with Oribe colored graffiti of traditional themes enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Combs, hairpins and bamboo and ceramic pipes in orange, green and black decorate the pale sand-textured surface of the massive charger. Typical of this artist is cut from a very thick slab with an irregular edge. On back a self portrait hunches over the clay forming a large vase, the caption beside reading Nanikuso! (I will not lose!) The dish is 17-1/2 inches (44 cm) diameter, weighing more than 7 kilograms (15 pounds) and is in perfect condition! Goro has a list of shows and prizes too lengthy to go through, but the highlights are, Nitten National Art Exhibition, Nihon Shin Kogei Ten (New National Crafts Exhibition), Nihon Gendai Kogei Ten (National Modern Crafts Exhibition), Asahi Togei Ten-(First of Show and governors prize), as well as the Kofukai Ten among many others.

A stunning white hagi glaze tinted with lavender cools on the sculpted natural from of this most expressive chawan by representative Hagi artist Kaneta Masanao enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is roughly 5 inches (13 cm) diameter, the same height and in perfect condition. Like Ryuichi, Masano likely needs no introduction, certainly one of Hagis most well known names, he has been displayed both nationally and internationally innumerable times. A globular vase covered in the trademark sansai glazes of Ningenkokuho Tokuda Yasokichi III (Masahiko) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The vase is 6-1/2 inches (17 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. Designated Living National Treasure in 1997 for his supremacy in the use of Kutani glazes, Yasokichi, born Masahiko, has gone a step further than many National Treasures by broadening his spectrum with a new style of Kutani ware. Masahiko graduated from the Kanazawa school of arts, and took up apprenticeship under his father Yasokichi II. His works are held by many private collections, as well as the Polk museum and Kanazawa Contemporary Museum of Art.

A fantastic sculptural Bizen vase by Ajiki Hiro (b. 1948) enclosed in the original signed wooden box dating circa 1995. The vase is roughly 14 inches (35 cm) tall and very heavy, the entire piece carved and cored from a solid block of clay. Hiro is an artist versed in many of Japans ceramic traditions. He fires Shino, Oribe, Seto, Raku, Bizen and Hagi styles as well as styles all his own. His daring Bizen forms have been compared to those of Kakurezaki Ryuichi, and in fact the two often collaborate and this was likely fired in that potters kiln. He has been displayed nationally at the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (Japanese Traditional Crafts Exhibition) and received grand prize at the Tanabe Museum's Contemporary Tea Forms exhibition among many others. He lives and pots in Shimane when not out traveling Japan or the world.

Two ethereal herons stand against a wind blasted bank lost to evening on this E-zara by Yokoishi Gagyu (b. 1975) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The deep dish is covered in a dark glaze shot through with pale fingers of white, the two creatures small against the other-worldly background. The backside is decorated with swirling lines of white, signed within the foot ring. It is 9-1/4 inches (23.5 cm) diameter, 2 inches (5 cm) tall and in perfect condition. His first exhibited piece at the age of 20 in 1955 took the governors prize at the Nagasaki Kenten Prefectural Art Exhibition. That was the beginning of a prestigious career prolific with awards culminating in being named an important cultural property for Nagasaki prefecture in 1975 (the state version of a living national treasure) he has also displayed with the Nihon Dento Kogeiten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibition) among many others, and has an impressive number of private exhibitions. He is credited with reviving the lost art of Utsutsukawa-yaki, and is a very important figure in modern Arita.

Try describing this incredible Mizusashi covered in glassy Oribe green glaze by important artist Hayashi Shotaro enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Spectacular is all that comes to mind. It is entirely sculptural, with a refinement of glaze only this artist can create. The piece is 7 inches (18 cm) tall, 9 inches (23 cm) diameter and in perfect condition. Shotaro (b. 1947) is one of the biggest names in contemporary Mino ceramics. He first began with a 7 year apprenticeship under his older brother Kotaro, ending when he established his own kiln in 1974. A sizeable seihakuji vase by celadon master Fukami Sueharu (b. 1947) enclosed in the original signed wooden box dating circa 1985. Graceful lines drape from 8 points evenly distributed about the rim, creating a sense of geometry on the simple orb. The vase is roughly 8-1/2 inches tall, 9-3/4 inches diameter and in excellent condition. The name of Kyotos Sueharu is synonymous with seihakuji celadon. He has been displayed numerous times at the prestigious Nitten, Nihon Togei Ten (National Japanese Ceramic Exhibition) and Nihon Gendai Kogei Ten (National Japanese Modern Crafts Exhibition) among others. He is held in the Yale University Museum among others. Red burns through the dramatically pin-holed white glaze clinging viciously to the sides of this large Shino Chawan by representative Mino artist Kato Takeshi enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Enigmatic dark iron cuts through the clouds of tinged white, lending a brash sense of the primitive power of fire. It has great Hada, the texture so good it would certainly add flavor to your cup of tea. The chawan is 5 inches (12.5 cm) diameter, 3-1/2 inches (9 cm) tall and of course in excellent condition. Takeshi was born in 1947 and like so many other Shino artists attended the Tajimi Industrial School. He studied under Kobayashi Bunichi, Ohashi Momonosuke and later in Kyoto under Uchida Kunio, opening his own kiln in 1973. Since he has spurned the realm of public competition in favor of the personal world of private exhibitions, including the Shinjuku Odakyu and Isetan galleries among many others.

Each uniquely carved row of frets on this large textured vase is a variegated shade of raw clay by Mihara Ken enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The vase is 10 inches (25.5 cm) tall, 8-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches (22 x 14.5 cm) and dates circa 1994. Ken was born in Shimane prefecture in 1958, and apprenticed under Funaki Kenji at the age of 23. He has been exhibited and or prized at the All Japan Ceramic Exhibition (Nihon Togei Ten), Asahi Ceramic Exhibition, the National Traditional Crafts Exhibition (Nihon Dento Kogei Ten) as well as the Tanabe Museum Chanoyu no Zokei Ten (Modern tea forms Sculpture Exhibition). He has displayed in both Europe and America and is held in the permanent collection of the Tanabe Museum of Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art among others.

Black green and silver bands like a core sample of crustal layers from some fantastic planet decorate the brushed and impressed clay of this large piece by Kyoto Artist Morino Taimei enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The vase is 10-1/2 inches (26.5 cm) tall, 9-1/2 by 5 inches (24 x 12.5 cm) and is in perfect condition. The box as well is like new. Taimei was born in Kyoto in 1934, and was first accepted into the Nitten National Exhibition at a relatively young age in 1957 (a year before graduating the Kyoto Municipal University of Fine Art!). In 1960 he received the prestigious Hokutosho prize at the same National Exhibition. In the early 60s he worked as a guest professor at the University of Chicago. Upon his return to Japan his career began to lift off with a second Hokutosho Prize at the Nitten, followed by The governors prize and others at the Gendai Kogei Ten (Modern National Crafts Exhibition). He was subsequently selected for display at the Kyoto and Tokyo National Museums in 1972 and was accepted into the first Nihon Togei Ten that same year. Since his list of exhibitions and prizes has continued to grow, with subsequent selections in the Tokyo and Kyoto museums of Art, as well as exhibitions in Paris, Italy, America, Canada, Denmark and others. Last year he received the Japan Art Academy Prize, an award to a work of art similar in weight to the bestowing of Living National Treasure to an artist. This puts the artist in a small club, rare and important, adding this to a collection honors the culmination of a life-times work.

A thick coating of green glass covers the burnt terracotta clay of this misshapen Teapot by Iga representative Atarashi Kanji enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The form is scraped and gashed and pushed and contorted, very pleasing to the touch and eye. It is 9-1/2 inches (24.5 cm) tall, roughly 6 inches (15.5 cm) diameter and in perfect condition, as is the wooden box. Kanji was born in Osaka in 1944, and graduated the Osaka College of Craft design. After 3 years in Kobe, and 4 in Kishiwada (Wakayama) he came to settle in Iga, where he was one of the driving forces behind the resurrection and preservation of the Iga tradition. Although displayed at the National Craft Exhibition, he prefers the intimacy of the private exhibition, of which he holds several every year. And if ones visit to japan is not timed right for an exhibition, he can otherwise be found at his kiln working along with his son and daughter.

This is a splendid example of work by one of Japans true ceramic masters, Kato Takuo (1917-2005), signed on the base and enclosed in the original signed and stamped wooden box titled Aoyu-kinsai Hanaike. The work surpasses the simplicity of the title, covered in rich blue glaze with silver clouding and gold highlights on the looping waves about the rim, the piece exemplifies the unusual forms favored by the artist in the late 80s and early 90s, leading up to his being given the most coveted title in Japan of living National Treasure. The simple bottle form decorated with convoluted loops reminds one of an ancient glass bottle pulled from 2000 years of sleep off the floor of the Aegean Sea. The vase stands 8-1/4 inches (21 cm) tall and is in perfect condition. Kato Takuo, I am sure, requires no introduction. He was trained in ceramics by both his father, Kato Kopei, and at the Kyoto School of ceramics. He was soon accepted and consistently displayed at any number of National and International Exhibitions, and was named an Intangible Cultural Asset in 1995. Sadly he passed away of pneumonia on January 12 of this year. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a piece by this highly sought Japanese Artist.

A truly Massive chozara Oribe Platter by important potter Ando Hidetake (b. 1938) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Relying entirely on sculptural presentation, the interior is devoid of any decoration, the heavily sculpted basin simply coated with glassy-green oribe glaze. Deep grooves have been cut from the slab of clay, the edges torn and ragged with dollops of green dripping from the base. On the underside in dark iron is the large character Hi (the first character in the artists name) inside an earthen cartouche. The dish is 33 x 15-1/2 x 2-3/4 inches (84 x 39 x 7 cm) and in excellent condition. It is very heavy, over 15 kilograms with the box, and will require special shipping considerations (cost of shipping is separate from item price). Hidetake was born third generation into a Mino pottery family in Gifu prefecture in 1938. He began an apprenticeship under Kato Tokuro in 1960. A testament to his skill, he was accepted for the first time four years later into the National Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition (Nihon Dento Kogei Ten), and followed that by taking governors prize at the Asahi Ceramics exhibition in 1970, and acceptance into the Japanese National Ceramics Exhibition (Nihon Togei Ten) in 1971; since he has displayed often with all of these important events. One of a small group of potters credited with the revival of Shino, he was named an Important Prefectural Cultural Property in 2003 (Gifu-Ken Juyo Mukei Bunkazai, the prefectural version of the Living National Treasure). A large sculpted image of the goddess of mercy Kannon cut from a solid slab of Iga clay by artist Kishimoto Kennin. The image is 12-1/2 inches (31.5 cm) tall and in perfect condition. The artists mark is engraved into the base of the back; there is no box. This artist has been working with clay since the 1950s, devouring styles along the way. Seto, Oribe, Iga and Celadon, all very different approaches which he masters one at a time, extending his unique view of the arts to new realms, and moving on to the next challenge when his appetite and personal genius has been satiated. Maple leaves swirl in a vortex on this large rectangular platter by Ando Hidetake enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Rich iron leaves seem to float on or just below the surface as if floating in a pond, the suction from a surfacing carp drawing down, pulling the leaves around it. A fine Nerikomi work by Living National Treasure Matsui Kosei (1927-2003) enclosed in the original signed and stamped wooden box. The surface has a soft sheen, like the effect of being carved from gray marble. It measures 17 x 12 x 3 inches (43 x 30.6 x 7 cm), in perfect condition. Matsui was born in 1927, beginning his ceramic studies in 1946. In 1957, he became a priest at the Getsusoji Temple, where in 1960 he built a kiln so he could research traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean ceramics. Subsequently, he became famous for neriage (designs in colored clays mixed together), based on Tang Dynasty Chinese techniques. In 1993, he was declared a Living National Treasure for his efforts in Neriage.

Spectacular Hi-iro defines this sake set by Konishi Toko II enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Various shades of color scorch the undecorated flame licked raw earth. A pleasure to drink from in every aspect, every cup offering a new facet. The tokkuri is 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) tall, cups 2-1/4 inches (6 cm) diameter and all is in perfect condition. A massive pottery platter with dramatic slashes of color on pale glaze by Warren McKenzie purchased at an exhibition held in Tokyo in 1989 (photocopies of catalog accompany the sale). Potters from around the world come to work and study in Japan, and these offerings were very possibly fired here in Mashiko judging by glaze and style. This platter is 18 inches (46 cm) diameter and in perfect condition. Warren McKenzie is one of American Pottery’s most influential figures. A proponent of the Mingei ideal of utilitarian design and function, he studied directly under Bernard Leach, the father of modern Studio pottery. Through this figure he came under the influence of Soetsu Yanagi and Hamada Shoji, leaders of the Mingei Philosophy in Japan whom he met in America at the age of 28. His traditional wheel thrown stoneware pots are simply glazed and reduction fired, following the Japanese style, and yet belie a cunning and spirit far beyond their seeming haphazard decoration. McKenzie taught at the University of Minnesota from 1952, and works from his studio in Stillwater Minnesota. He is considered one of the most important figures of the 20th century in the pottery world.
