A striking series of concise patterns underlie the deep purple and green glaze on this large ichirin-sashi vase by Living National Treasure Tokuda Yasokichi III enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The box is signed Masahiko, dating it pre 1993 when he succeeded the family name. A charming baluster form vase decorated with a ring of drying fish by Katsuo Seiryudo (1907-1984) in the original signed wooden box. The hirame (flat fish) are unglazed except for an iron like underglaze used to draw the details, and shiny black dots for eyes. The contrast between the unglazed fish and white ceramic is unexpected and pleasing, in that ordinarily it would be opposite. The vase measures roughly 8-1/2 inches (21.5 cm) in diameter and height, and bears the artists cartouche-like sta ...click for details

A charming baluster form vase decorated with scrolling vines of ivy leaves by Katsuo Seiryudo (1907-1984) in the original signed wooden box. The rust colored vines seem to cling to the crackle-glazed surface hemmed in top and bottom with a wide swath of the dark iron glaze reminiscent of a Zen circle. The vessel is 1 foot (31 cm) tall, roughly the same diameter and in fine condition. The remnants of an exhibition tag still cling to the base after more than half a century. Here is a quintessential piece by Master Mashiko Potter and Living National Treasure Hamada Shoji (1894-1978) enclosed in the original signed and stamped wooden box. The subtlety of the wide faces is a pleasant contrast with the rich iron frame of the narrow sides and top. A cluster of leaves in a zen circle underscored or shaded by tapering rails under heavily crackled clear glaze, a snowy white belt running across the scene is what we see. However there is more to this vase, a subtle textur ...click for details
