The box is signed Masahiko, dating it pre 1993 when he succeeded the family name. The feldspathic glaze has been burnt and changed by contact with the flame, the crystallized surface varying in shades from yellow to pale green. A large Shinshoku Ware-tsubo eroded through natural processes during firing with a shattered rim attached to the body at the shoulder. This piece is a virtual textbook on Yohen firing effects. Tamadare, Shinshoku, koge and other effects are supplanted by a large white kutsuki on the front, all under the shadow of the shattered rim fused to the shoulder. Oni Shino Vase by Tsukigata Nahiko (1923-2006) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The glaze tinge blends from green to yellow to red, the colors blending as the entire surface slides liquid down the sides. Super-high-firing technique allows the various ash and fledspar glazes to melt and combine into a glass surface unseen in other potters. This is a masterpiece of that style. The shape is all Toru, an artist who took the work of Kanjiro and moved beyond, as represented in this large tri-legged tsubo.
